Next of Kin

Jack fiddled with the pen and scanned the long list of questions on the form attached to the brown clipboard, sighing in frustration when he realized there were two sheets to be filled out, front and back.  He hated everything about doctors' appointments, the paperwork and the waiting most of all.  But he'd been putting it off and Lureen had been after him – needed it for insurance or some damn thing.

He was checking off boxes quickly, but hesitated when he came to the next line – "Who to Contact in Case of Emergency."  He wrote in Lureen's name and their phone number slowly, a feeling of unease sweeping over him as he thought of Ennis so many miles away.  What if Ennis got hurt on the job or was injured in an accident or ……he squeezed his eyes tightly against the thought.

How would he ever find out?

That was beautiful Marie. This is a fine example of 'how bad it really got' for Jack and Ennis being so far apart for so long. I can't imagine...

thanks.

In the Heart of the Beholder

"Daddy, look!"  Bobby ran in the door, waving an envelope in the air.  "We got the pictures from our trip."

Jack placed his hand gently on Bobby's head as he looked at the snapshots, and he forced a smile, struck by the dullness of his eyes as they stared back at him.

"Mama sure looks pretty, huh, Daddy?"

"She sure does – always has been the prettiest little gal in Childress."

He ruffled Bobby's hair as he turned away, his thoughts naturally wandering to the most beautiful man he'd ever known.  But instead of envisioning the dark eyes, he thought of the bright soul within them; in place of the blond curls, he recalled the thoughtful mind; and rather than picturing a muscled chest, he imagined the tender heart beating beneath it.

True beauty that couldn't be seen with the eyes.

The Best Part

The worst part was always the anguish of good-bye.

The worst part of the worst part was the dread of being apart, intensifying as the miles between them grew.

The best part of the worst part was that sweet, timeless moment when they were never closer, just before separating at last.

The best part was always the promise of hello.

The worst part of the best part was being at the mercy of time as it flew by, knowing they were powerless to rein it, never enough, never enough…

The best part of the best part was the Truth between them.
