Yesterday

It seemed like only yesterday that their small bedroom felt homey and lived in, not messy and jumbled.

It seemed like only yesterday that the chair with the missing leg seemed quaint, not sad.

It seemed like only yesterday that the color of the walls seemed light and cheery, not dull and dirty.

It seemed like only yesterday that the red dress was her favorite, not the one she wouldn't ever wear again.

It seemed like only yesterday that her husband was her husband, not a stranger.

It seemed like she hadn't slept in years, but it was only yesterday.

"sticky" inspired the following...though it didn't make it through the final edit :-\

Broken

That was maybe the first time, right before Alma Jr. pulled on one jar and sent a couple dozen of them shattering down, so it wasn't until she was heading home that she got mad, that he hadn't kept his word and she was trying to do what she could for the family and he put her in that position at work. At least Monroe was nice about it, and she didn't have to call her sister on top of everything else. But it didn't feel fair, Ennis putting his job before hers, even though she guessed it was, him being her husband. So she backed down with hardly a word.
Then there was the time when she told him, there it was, the postcard, the first one, and she just told him, just handed him over, and didn't even know it. What if she hadn't? What if somehow she'd known? Or if, just by mistake, she dropped it, lost it in the clutter of everything else. Or if Jr. had pulled it off the table, thrown it away like she was playing a game, helping Mommy clean house. Then nothing, nothing would have broken.
on the mountain flying in the euphoric, bitter air

Wonderful, as always, Fern.  "Not fair" and "broken" describes all their lives, doesn't it?   Thanks.

Kool-Aid Smiles

The girls watched the commercial intently as the smiling mom filled everyone's glasses with red Kool-Aid from the smiling pitcher.  She looked like she never got sad, and the smiling dad looked like he never got angry, and the smiling children looked liked they never cried themselves to sleep.

Junior added up their Kool-Aid points again – it would take a while, but she was determined to collect enough points to send away for that smiling pitcher. A part of her knew that they really didn't need more pitchers in their small apartment; she was really just looking for more smiles.

Slow and Steady Wins the Girl

He kept one eye on their dinner guest all night.  There was a steadiness about him that he'd always approved of and he considered his reticence to be a good thing.  Unlike that fellow his older girl ran with - a crafty one, with all his smooth talking ways.  He saw heartbreak in her future.

But this one seemed a good match for his baby girl, and he took pride in his ability to size a man up, so when Ennis del Mar quietly took him aside and asked for her hand, his answer was fast and firm. "Sure enough."
