In Harmony

Sometimes it seemed like it all was in perfect harmony, all lined up and right, but now it didn’t feel like that at all.  Now it felt like it all was out of alignment and rolling out of control.

He tried not to pay attention, he tried not to let himself feel, but the forces were from too many directions, all at once.  He tried to breathe and to let it all go, but it just wasn’t possible now at all.

He looked up at the heavens.  “You’ve got to be kidding” he said.  There had to be a reason, there had to be a way to understand.  But he never could.  He just longed to feel like it all was in harmony again.  He longed to feel like all was right in his world once more.

. . . .
He looked up at the heavens.  “You’ve got to be kidding” he said.  . . .

I've done that same thing more than once, Marl.  We can all relate.

Cosmo Guy

Childress, Texas
April 1972

Jack spotted it out of the corner of his eye as he pulled his boots on and plucked it out from under Lureen's pillow. What did we have here?  Cosmopolitan.  He chuckled to himself as he flipped through the pages.  Yeah, he'd heard about this – that actor guy from TV.  Jack let the centerfold fall open and peeked over his shoulder, feeling a little like a five-year old with his hand stuck in the cookie jar. Shit.  This guy was damn near as hairy as that bearskin rug he was sprawled across.  And that mustache….didn't care for that at all.

Ennis chuckled to himself as he typed on the keyboard, hunting and pecking in his one-finger typing style.

“What are you laughin at?” asked Jack, looking up from the couch where he was still deeply engrossed in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

“Oh nothing, just havin a lil bit a fun on this website.”

“What website?”

“Just one with recipes for drinks. Lots a comments here on this one called a Cosmopolitan. Sayin it’s a gay drink. I’m addin my two cents.”

“We ain’t ever had Cosmopolitans, En.”

“Yeah, well you better go buy the ingredients this afternoon cuz I just stated publicly that we like ta drink em. Sounds like ya can get good and snockered if ya have more than two of these.”

Jack got up and looked over Ennis’s shoulder. “Hm, lime juice, vodka, cranberry juice, Grand Marnier…we have all that in the house. I could make one right now.”

“Ya sure?”

“Sure, why not?”

“Well, see this other comment…they make ya horny.”

“Ya got a problem with that?” said Jack with a slow smile.

“Have I ever…?” said Ennis, as he got up from his chair.

       “Mind your own damn business.”
The kid came from the back wiping his hands on his apron.  “Folks, Get you somethin more?  Somethin a eat?”
      “We’re leavin.”
“I want another vodka...”  She looked straight at Ennis.  “with a twist.  Get my friend a shot to go with hs beer.”  She downed her drink.
       “Let’s go, gettin dark soon.”
      “We’re on my nickel.”
“You look like an Old Rose man.  That your favorite?”  The kid winked.  Ennis nodded and the kid headed toward the bar.
She smiled.  “Pretty perceptive, don’t you think?  Looks like we might have two part harmony here.”

Wasn't going to run from that ever again.

Fern,
Don't we wish that had happened.  I really liked the way you utilized 'run'.

"

"Depends on whether you decide to die the next ten minutes or not."

Chrissi,

Let him have it!

"Well don't you worry, i'll have you singing like Glen Campbell fore long.  Just you wait."

Janice,

Cute.  They'll either be a hit or clear out the place.
Remember 'Water Walkin Jesus?'
"Oh my God, Jack's gone a sing - everybody run for cover!"

There had to be a reason, there had to be a way to understand.

Marl,
I think most everybody hopes this.

In Between

(July 1986)
Tom pulled the truck over to the side of the road.  “We better get some rest” he said.  Both Tom and Ennis closed their eyes.  Ennis soon fell asleep.

But Tom stayed awake.  He watched the first rays of light find their way to the day.  He watched Ennis sleep, with a peaceful smile of sweet dreams on his face.  Tom sighed.  It was just like being between a rock and a hard place.  He didn’t need to stay.  He could go to a big city and become a cosmopolitan guy, just like he always imagined he would be.

But then Ennis stirred, and the smile turned into a worried frown.  Tom shook his head and sighed again.  As hard as this place was, he sure got into it deep.
