1. Do you have a low startle point?

Not really; I'm reasonably calm most of the time.

2. Are you as bad as Jack is at cooking?

No, I'm a decent cook.

3. Ever shot an elk or other animal?

Nope.

4. Was your dad right?

Yes, most of the time he was.

5. Ever drunk whiskey straight out of the bottle?

Oh yeah ...

6. Ever slept on the ground beside a campfire?

No, only in the tent, on an air mattress.

7. Ever lived in an apartment above a laundromat (or other retail establishment)?

No.

8. Are you as good a horseback rider as Lureen -- or can you stay on the horse, anyway?

Yes, I can stay on the horse, but I'm not very proficient.

9. Do you know someone named Jack?

Yes, my son.

10. Ever contacted a romantic partner via postcard?

Yes, the person who is now my husband.

11. Do you ever bring home freshly caught fish?

I have, but not for years on years.

12. Are you worse than Bobby when it comes to losing stuff?

No, I tend to keep my stuff in the same places all the time, so I usually know where to look.

13. Ever socialized with the fire-and-brimstone crowd?

Well, I once spent a long, snowbound weekend with a family of fundamentalist Christians so strict they had no electricity, no indoor plumbing and rode around on a horse-drawn wagon when possible. They were pretty interesting, actually.

14. Would somebody looking around your home comment that you need more furniture?

Well, they might comment that I need NEW furniture, and they'd be right.

15.. Do you watch TV during dinner?

Sometimes. But not while sitting at the table.

16. Ever used an electric knife?

No, but my parents used to have one.

17. Did you pledge Tri Delt -- or some other sorority or fraternity?

No.

18. Do you remember (or know) how it is, being broke all the time?

For my first job out of college, my salary was so low I qualified for fuel assistance and lived on generic pasta. But my parents helped me out from time to time, so I wasn't seriously broke.

19. Did your mother keep your bedroom the way it was when you were a kid?

Not really.

20. Have you ever scattered someone's ashes?

We set out to scatter my dad's ashes in the Caribbean a year after he died. But at the last minute my step-mother decided she wasn't ready to part with them. So we just vacationed there instead and she scattered them herself a year or two later.

These questions can all be answered YES or NO. But feel free to elaborate wherever you'd like.

1. Do you have a low startle point? No.

2. Are you as bad as Jack is at cooking? No.

3. Ever shot an elk or other animal? No.

4. Was your dad right? Once in awhile.  But he usually didn't say much - a la Ennis - for anybody to get an underlying meaning.

5. Ever drunk whiskey straight out of the bottle? Absolutely.

6. Ever slept on the ground beside a campfire? Again, absolutely.

7. Ever lived in an apartment above a laundromat (or other retail establishment)? No.

8. Are you as good a horseback rider as Lureen -- or can you stay on the horse, anyway? Yep and I've done dressage (over fences) too!

9. Do you know someone named Jack? Oh, yes.  One of my best friends has a son named Jack.  I've got special hopes for him.

10. Ever contacted a romantic partner via postcard? Yes, but not exclusively.

11. Do you ever bring home freshly caught fish?  No.  However, my father used to bring home freshly killed squirrel.  He'd skin 'em, freeze 'em....leave 'em til next year, at which point he would toss them and go thru the whole routine again.  It was like he expected Mom to 'cook' them, which clearly wasn't about to happen. :)

12. Are you worse than Bobby when it comes to losing stuff? Sure enough.

13. Ever socialized with the fire-and-brimstone crowd? Grew up with 'em and still am friendly to some.

14. Would somebody looking around your home comment that you need more furniture? Yep - more or better.

15.. Do you watch TV during dinner?  Nope, I'm on BetterMost.

16. Ever used an electric knife? Nope.

17. Did you pledge Tri Delt -- or some other sorority or fraternity?  Alpha Delta Theta

18. Do you remember (or know) how it is, being broke all the time?  Absolutely.

19. Did your mother keep your bedroom the way it was when you were a kid?  Not on your life.

20. Have you ever scattered someone's ashes?  Not personally, though I've been a part of it on someone else's behalf before - it was a moving experience and I want my own ashes scattered in a similar manner.

Oh good! Another questionnaire. I LOVE these!!  :D

These questions can all be answered YES or NO. But feel free to elaborate wherever you'd like.

1. Do you have a low startle point? YES!!

2. Are you as bad as Jack is at cooking? Probably. People love my fried chicken though!

3. Ever shot an elk or other animal? NO!! I could NEVER do that! I don't even step on ants or spiders.

4. Was your dad right? My Dad is almost ALWAYS right. Mom was too, most of the time.

5. Ever drunk whiskey straight out of the bottle? Yes. But if it's really cheap whiskey, I'll chase it with something.

6. Ever slept on the ground beside a campfire? Yes. Even when we had the motor home, we ALWAYS slept outside, unless it was raining. Mom and Dad would sleep in the motorhome, and we would sleep outside under the stars and next to the campfire. We would talk all night long and tell ghost stories. Sometimes we would sneak away and run around the campground while everyone else slept! It was fun.

7. Ever lived in an apartment above a laundromat (or other retail establishment)? Not above one, no.

8. Are you as good a horseback rider as Lureen -- or can you stay on the horse, anyway? I'm not sure. I was really good with horses when I was a teenager, but it has been years since I have rode a horse.

9. Do you know someone named Jack? I have several friends named Jack. I have an Uncle named Jack too!

10. Ever contacted a romantic partner via postcard? No. I don't think so.

11. Do you ever bring home freshly caught fish?  No, I don't like fish, and even if I did, I would never fish. I  think it's cruel since they sell fish at the grocery store. It's not necessary.

12. Are you worse than Bobby when it comes to losing stuff? Yes. I'm probably even worse than Bobby.

13. Ever socialized with the fire-and-brimstone crowd? Socialized? I know some "fire and brimstone" people, but I'm not friends with any of them. I  think they find me offensive! lol

14. Would somebody looking around your home comment that you need more furniture? No. I doubt it.

15.. Do you watch TV during dinner?  Oh yes, absolutely!

16. Ever used an electric knife? My mother had an electric kitchen knife, but I don't.

17. Did you pledge Tri Delt -- or some other sorority or fraternity?  No. I didn't pledge a fraternity in college.

18. Do you remember (or know) how it is, being broke all the time?  I sure do remember what it was like.

19. Did your mother keep your bedroom the way it was when you were a kid?  She did for a while I think.

20. Have you ever scattered someone's ashes?  I've scattered ashes several times with my friends; never in my family though. Mom's ashes are interred in a mausoleum at Crown Hill Cemetery.

Great questions Katherine! Thanks so much for posting them!  :D

Maybe some of our other members could come up with similar questionnaires!

1. Do you have a low startle point? No

2. Are you as bad as Jack is at cooking? Yes

3. Ever shot an elk or other animal? No

4. Was your dad right? No. Okay, sometimes he was

5. Ever drunk whiskey straight out of the bottle? No. Only drank whiskey once in my life. Was at a birthday party I was invited to in Scotland. After saying I wouldn't like whiskey, I earned a stern look and the reply "You're in Scotland, lady!" I gave in  :)

6. Ever slept on the ground beside a campfire? Yes

7. Ever lived in an apartment above a laundromat (or other retail establishment)? No

8. Are you as good a horseback rider as Lureen -- or can you stay on the horse, anyway? Nope. I'm heavily allergic to horses. The horse wouldn't even need to throw me, I would fall down alone

9. Do you know someone named Jack? No

10. Ever contacted a romantic partner via postcard? Yes

11. Do you ever bring home freshly caught fish? No

12. Are you worse than Bobby when it comes to losing stuff? No

13. Ever socialized with the fire-and-brimstone crowd? Not on your effin life.

14. Would somebody looking around your home comment that you need more furniture? No, definitely not. In contrast, I should get rid of some stuff.

15.. Do you watch TV during dinner? Never

16. Ever used an electric knife? No

17. Did you pledge Tri Delt -- or some other sorority or fraternity? No way

18. Do you remember (or know) how it is, being broke all the time? No. At least I never felt broke, but looking back there were times with zero financial reserves

19. Did your mother keep your bedroom the way it was when you were a kid? My mother moved out years before I did. And my father didn't keep it even for some weeks.

20. Have you ever scattered someone's ashes? No and I hope I never have to. I wouldn't want it for me or for any beloved person. But if it was the person's wish, I would self-evidently respect it.

1. Do you have a low startle point?

Yes, for sure.

2. Are you as bad as Jack is at cooking?

I don't really know, I almost never cook.

3. Ever shot an elk or other animal?

No, I wouldn't even kill a mouse.

4. Was your dad right?

Yes, about almost everything.  Wish I knew that sooner.

5. Ever drunk whiskey straight out of the bottle?

Nope

6. Ever slept on the ground beside a campfire?

Yep, but a long time ago.

7. Ever lived in an apartment above a laundromat (or other retail establishment)?

No, but I did live in pretty bad places when I was in school.

8. Are you as good a horseback rider as Lureen -- or can you stay on the horse, anyway?

I think I went riding twice, and I stayed on the horse both times.

9. Do you know someone named Jack?

A few, but no one close to me.

10. Ever contacted a romantic partner via postcard?

No, but that sure would be lovely to do so.

11. Do you ever bring home freshly caught fish?

12. Are you worse than Bobby when it comes to losing stuff?

I admit it, I am worse than Bobby, I am always losing stuff.

13. Ever socialized with the fire-and-brimstone crowd?

Just met some once when I was going to go to school down south, and came right back up north, wasn't the place or crowd for me.  But I realized later I should have tried to stick it out. I think the south  can be cool and interesting and it was a great school.

14. Would somebody looking around your home comment that you need more furniture?

Oh yeah, but also that I  need more room and less other stuff.

15.. Do you watch TV during dinner?

Not during dinner, but on as background a lot.

16. Ever used an electric knife?

I am proud to say never.

17. Did you pledge Tri Delt -- or some other sorority or fraternity?

No, that wasn't for me at the time, but  I didn't go to a school where it was important.

18. Do you remember (or know) how it is, being broke all the time?

Yes, I  very well.

19. Did your mother keep your bedroom the way it was when you were a kid?

1. Do you have a low startle point?  Yes, but it's hard to tell since I tend to freeze and thus always look cool and calm.   ;D

2. Are you as bad as Jack is at cooking?  Almost.

3. Ever shot an elk or other animal?  No, but I almost shot my own leg once though.  I was at an outdoor shooting range, had my gun cocked and at the second I was squeezing the trigger, a horsefly bit the shit out of my leg.  I instinctively swung my arm down to swat it away...holding a cocked handgun.  Not too bright.  I didn't accidentally fire, thank all the gods, but it was a close one.

4. Was your dad right?  No.

5. Ever drunk whiskey straight out of the bottle?  Yes and promptly spat it out all over the dashboard of the car.  In front of my boyfriend.  Rather embarrassing.

6. Ever slept on the ground beside a campfire?  Yes.

7. Ever lived in an apartment above a laundromat (or other retail establishment)?  Not yet.

8. Are you as good a horseback rider as Lureen -- or can you stay on the horse, anyway?  I can stay on a horse, I've had lessons, but not at a full gallop.

9. Do you know someone named Jack?  No.

10. Ever contacted a romantic partner via postcard?  I imagine at one time I might have.  I have hardly taken vacations without a romantic partner, but I remember once or twice I did, so I might have.

11. Do you ever bring home freshly caught fish?  Yes.

12. Are you worse than Bobby when it comes to losing stuff?  No.  I hardly ever lose things.

13. Ever socialized with the fire-and-brimstone crowd?  Unfortunately, yes.

14. Would somebody looking around your home comment that you need more furniture?  No.

15.. Do you watch TV during dinner?  Yes, daily.

16. Ever used an electric knife?  Once, as a child.  I never thought it did much good.

17. Did you pledge Tri Delt -- or some other sorority or fraternity?  No.

18. Do you remember (or know) how it is, being broke all the time?  Yes, and I don't recommend it.

19. Did your mother keep your bedroom the way it was when you were a kid?  Heck no.  She redecorated the second I moved out.

20. Have you ever scattered someone's ashes?  No.  Not yet anyway.

16. Ever used an electric knife? No, but I do have a vibrator, latjoreme!

 Good thinking -- that's much safer! Unless, of course, you're using it on the Thanksgiving dinner table ...  ;)

 That's an interesting family custom!

It was fun.

Fun memories ...  :)

5. Ever drunk whiskey straight out of the bottle? No. Only drank whiskey once in my life. Was at a birthday party I was invited to in Scotland. After saying I wouldn't like whiskey, I earned a stern look and the reply "You're in Scotland, lady!" I gave in  :)

Hey Chrissi, I drank my first whiskey in Scotland, too! Not my last, though ...  ::)

2. Are you as bad as Jack is at cooking?

No! Thank God not, I am pretty bad with a can opener though...

But I bet you don't use one while lying on your back and opening a can of beans on your stomach, Mel!

8. Are you as good a horseback rider as Lureen -- or can you stay on the horse, anyway? I can ride all night long.  Oh you mean a horse?  um, No.

5. Ever drunk whiskey straight out of the bottle?  Is there another way?

 Technically, yes. But bottle-swigging is proper whiskey etiquette.

13. Ever socialized with the fire-and-brimstone crowd?

Just met some once when I was going to go to school down south, and came right back up north, wasn't the place or crowd for me.  But I realized later I should have tried to stick it out. I think the south  can be cool and interesting and it was a great school.

As a Northerner who lived in the South for seven years, I completely agree! But you can always go back someday.

Fear of doing something just like that is one of several reasons I don't use guns.

1. Do you have a low startle point?  Hm, I think of myself as easy-going, and then notice that I'm all worried and anxious, so I don't know.

2. Are you as bad as Jack is at cooking?  I'm a pretty good cook.

3. Ever shot an elk or other animal?  No, but in my early 20s I decided that to be a meat eater I should know what it's like to really kill an animal, so I butchered a chicken.  It cured me of carnivorocity for quite a while.

4. Was your dad right?  Not often.

5. Ever drunk whiskey straight out of the bottle?  You know, I didn't realize it til you asked, but I don't think so.

6. Ever slept on the ground beside a campfire?  Yes, but with a pad and sleeping bag.  And pillow.

7. Ever lived in an apartment above a laundromat (or other retail establishment)?  No.

8. Are you as good a horseback rider as Lureen -- or can you stay on the horse, anyway?  No more horseback ridin' for me.

9. Do you know someone name a Jack?  Yes.

10. Ever contacted a romantic partner via postcard?  You bet.

11. Do you ever bring home freshly caught fish?  No.

12. Are you worse than Bobby when it comes to losing stuff?  No.  (These are SUCH great questions.  I love them.)

13. Ever socialized with the fire-and-brimstone crowd?  Well, you know, this reminds me of my early and mid teens - while I was thrashing around, doing too many dangerous and/or illegal things, I had these two cousins about my age, who were very Christian, and who did a lot of stuff with their church youth group.  I used to like to infrequently go with them, and pretend I was a good girl too.  They always seemed happier and more at peace than my friends and I did.  If only there wasn't that whole pesky believing part of it.

14. Would somebody looking around your home comment that you need more furniture?  Doubt it.

15.. Do you watch TV during dinner?  When I'm alone.  I LOVE to watch TV during dinner.  But my 4yo doesn't know that.  We eat dinner together as a family at the table most nights.  (Giving her what I didn't get.  She misses out on the fun of TV during dinner, but the trade off is August, I mean parents who are connecting with her and mostly all having a good time together.

16. Ever used an electric knife?  No, but I've used a chain saw.

17. Did you pledge Tri Delt -- or some other sorority or fraternity?  Just honor societies I never participated in.

18. Do you remember (or know) how it is, being broke all the time?  Yes, but I've never known what it is like to feel like there is no one who wouldn't bail me out if I sank too low.

19. Did your mother keep your bedroom the way it was when you were a kid?  For a while.

20. Have you ever scattered someone's ashes?  I've been part of other people scattering ashes.  I've never been the actual scatterer.

    At times I do.

2. Are you as bad as Jack is at cooking?

Yes, but I can heat things up pretty well.

I accidently shot a woodpecker once and I will never forgive myself for it.

He was left handed and very proud of it.

15.. Do you watch TV during dinner?

I have never thought about this, but no I have not. My parents had one of them things when I was a kid, I was not allowed to touch it.

17. Did you pledge Tri Delt -- or some other sorority or fraternity?

Naw, I was too much of an anti-snob snob when I was in college, but if I had to do it over again, well, I would have to go to a college that had frats to begin with.

1. Do you have a low startle point?  Not particularly.  I'm actually very difficult to surprise or upset in any way.

2. Are you as bad as Jack is at cooking?  I can cook at least worth a damn.  But I can't peel a potato as well as he can.

3. Ever shot an elk or other animal?  No, but I've shot a rifle many times at clay pigeons (and hit most of them).

4. Was your dad right?  Yes.  About just about everything.  Except who would make a good President.

5. Ever drunk whiskey straight out of the bottle?  Yes.  Jack Daniels once.  Once.

6. Ever slept on the ground beside a campfire?  Yes.  And I froze my ass off when that fire died down, too.

7. Ever lived in an apartment above a laundromat (or other retail establishment)?  No.  One of my brothers did once, though - over a diner - and I thought it was really cool.

8. Are you as good a horseback rider as Lureen -- or can you stay on the horse, anyway?  Hell, no.  Only ridden once, and that was while the horse was being led around in a little circle (I was nine).

9. Do you know someone named Jack?  Actually, no, come to think of it.  Don't know anyone named Jake, either.

10. Ever contacted a romantic partner via postcard?  Yes, if saying "The weather is beautiful - wish you were here" from the Virgin Islands while on vacation counts.

11. Do you ever bring home freshly caught fish?  No.  Don't fish.

12. Are you worse than Bobby when it comes to losing stuff?  Depends on how bad he is.  I doubt anyone is worse than I am.  I almost always find the stuff I lose, though.

13. Ever socialized with the fire-and-brimstone crowd? Yes, on a regular basis.  Some of my neighbors would qualify as being part of that crowd.  They're generally lots of fun as long as politics (or civil liberties) of any kind don't get brought up.

14. Would somebody looking around your home comment that you need more furniture?  Definitely not.  They'd probably say we need less.

15.. Do you watch TV during dinner?  Sometimes.  Used to all the time before I had a child.  Now we're trying to do the regular "family dinner" around the table thing.

16. Ever used an electric knife?  No.  Never owned one, either.  I don't need electrical things that vibrate.  ;)

17. Did you pledge Tri Delt -- or some other sorority or fraternity?  Nope.  Probably would have gotten black-balled.

18. Do you remember (or know) how it is, being broke all the time?  Yes, I do.  We were always broke when I was a kid.  Mom was up to her eyeballs in debt.  We couldn't answer the phone or the door in case it was a creditor (and there was no Caller I.D. or answering machines then).  Good times.

19. Did your mother keep your bedroom the way it was when you were a kid?  My stepmother didn't, no.  The second I left for college, she converted it into a sewing/giftwrapping room.  She plunked a day bed in there for "guests" of which I guess I was from that point on.  More good times.

20. Have you ever scattered someone's ashes?  I've been present when someone else did.  My parents had a longtime friend who lived down here and sailed out of the Miami Yacht Club.  When he died, his wishes were that his wife scatter his ashes in Biscayne Bay.  So my parents and she and their daughter and grand-kids  and a priest and I went out on a great big tri-maran, the priest said a few words, and his wife scattered his ashes out there.  I wasn't prepared for how emotional it would be.  They had had one of those storybook marriages - 45 years and they were still in love.  I almost started choking I was crying so hard just seeing how emotional she and their daughter were.

GREAT questionnaire, Katherine!  :)

1. Do you have a low startle point?  Yes, my desk is situated in my office so that my back is to the door... therefore people are always startling me... making me jump etc. when the come to my office.  But, I have a very even temper... if that's the type of "startle" you mean.

2. Are you as bad as Jack is at cooking? I love the idea of cooking and I love cooking shows.  But, yeah, I'm pretty bad.

3. Ever shot an elk or other animal? No Way!

4. Was your dad right?  My Dad and I get along really well.  And, 'on topic' regarding Brokeback, he's much, much better about me being gay than my Mom (she's pretty good with it too, but I think she struggles more with it).

5. Ever drunk whiskey straight out of the bottle? Yes

6. Ever slept on the ground beside a campfire? No

7. Ever lived in an apartment above a laundromat (or other retail establishment)?  Well, I live in a big apartment building now (and have in the past in other cities too) and there are retail establishments on the ground floor.  This building has a hair salon and a really nice Italian restaurant. We have an in-building laundry room, which is sort of like a laundromat.

8. Are you as good a horseback rider as Lureen -- or can you stay on the horse, anyway?  I can ride a horse.  I took lessons for one summer as a kid.  But, no, I wouldn't say I'm good at it.

9. Do you know someone named Jack?  Yes. I had a good friend in high school named Jack... it turns out he's gay too :) !  And, a cousin of mine has a son named Jack... and like our Jack he's a John Jr.

10. Ever contacted a romantic partner via postcard?  Yes

11. Do you ever bring home freshly caught fish? Yes, when I was a kid I went fishing a few times with my Grandfather

12. Are you worse than Bobby when it comes to losing stuff? No, thankfully, I don't lose stuff too terribly

13. Ever socialized with the fire-and-brimstone crowd? No

14. Would somebody looking around your home comment that you need more furniture? Yes! This is my first job out of grad school.  So, I was almost starting from scratch.  I moved from a tiny studio apartment to a relatively large apartment.  So for the first year in Pittsburgh is felt really empty in here.  It's slowly getting better.

15.. Do you watch TV during dinner?  I live alone.  So, yes, all the time.

16. Ever used an electric knife? No

17. Did you pledge Tri Delt -- or some other sorority or fraternity?  I went to two women's colleges (one for undergrad and one for grad).  They don't have sororities.  But, they are a sorority of sorts because they're both Seven Sisters schools.

18. Do you remember (or know) how it is, being broke all the time?  Yes... see all the answers about grad school.  ::)

19. Did your mother keep your bedroom the way it was when you were a kid?  Yes, for a long, long time

20. Have you ever scattered someone's ashes?  No.  But when I was college age, we buried the ashes of both my cat and dog in our backyard.  We planted a pussy willow bush and a dogwood tree and buried the little containers with their ashes under them.  Just thinking about it makes me tear up.  :'(

Amanda, your pussy willows and dogwood tree are so sweet.  We buried our beloved Layla's ashes in a little container in the back yard that she so loved, right where she always used to lie down, roll over, and scratch her own back in the sun (and sneeze - they always do that when they roll around on their backs).  It was kind of right in the center of a small yard, so it wasn't conducive to planting a tree or a bush there.  But that's a lovely idea.

1. Do you have a low startle point?  No, I'm quite a placid kinda chap.

2. Are you as bad as Jack is at cooking?  I hate cooking with a passion, mainly 'cause I'm so bad at it.

3. Ever shot an elk or other animal?  Do spiders count? Spiders come straight from the Stygian Pit of Hell and should all be sent back there - DOA!

4. Was your dad right?  What my Dad was, was an absolute sweetheart. He was a dear, sweet, gentle man. It was my mother who was always right!

5. Ever drunk whiskey straight out of the bottle? I'm not fond of whiskey, but after seeing Brokeback Mountain, I made a valiant effort to acquire a taste for it, because I wanted so much to be like Jack & Ennis. Nearly made myself sick! It's still in the cupboard!

6. Ever slept on the ground beside a campfire? Yes, and I was lying beside a really cute guy, too! Alas, there were also about 20 other kids snoozing around that campfire at the time!

7. Ever lived in an apartment above a laundromat (or other retail establishment)? No, but if I did, I would have decorated it beautifully and made it look very chic! More importantly, I would have arranged for a tradesman to move the hot-water tank out of the living room!

8. Are you as good a horseback rider as Lureen -- or can you stay on the horse, anyway? I have taken riding lessons and can ride okay, but I'm not as good as Lureen. Or Ennis, for that matter!

9. Do you know someone named Jack? Yes. His name is Jack Twist and you can see his photo throughout my apartment.

10. Ever contacted a romantic partner via postcard? Alas, no, I'm strictly an e-mail kinda gal!

11. Do you ever bring home freshly caught fish? Yes. Fish I've freshly caught myself from the supermarket.

12. Are you worse than Bobby when it comes to losing stuff? I'm at least as bad as Jack and very probably worse than Bobby. Especially my keys (I've never lost my blue parker, though).

13. Ever socialized with the fire-and-brimstone crowd?  Not any more.

14. Would somebody looking around your home comment that you need more furniture? Less is more! I could probably do with less.

15.. Do you watch TV during dinner? Always! But I never watch football   during dinner! And I prefer to watch the ice-skating after dinner!

16. Ever used an electric knife? Never! When my mama spends 4 hours preparing a turkey, I like to carve it by hand!

17. Did you pledge Tri Delt -- or some other sorority or fraternity? I don't recall anyone in Brokeback Mountain, book or film, attending university?!

18. Do you remember (or know) how it is, being broke all the time? I do remember what it was like to be broke. Fortunately, however, I didn't have child support to pay.

19. Did your mother keep your bedroom the way it was when you were a kid? Weirdly, yes, she did. My old bedroom was always referred to as the spare room after I left home, but it looked spookily just the way I'd left it.

20. Have you ever scattered someone's ashes? No, but I would consider it a great honour and privilege to do so.

Come on down to Australia, David, and bring your jar with you! But I should warn you, you'd better make that a mighty big jar! That's because we have really huge, ugly, furry spiders down here with such names as the Australian Barking Spider (yes, they do really bark like a dog - big as a bloody Alsatian too!) and the Bird Eating Spider (they are so big and build such powerful webs that they actually catch birds!). There's also the Sydney Funnel-web Spider. It's poison is so toxic, it can kill you within hours! Cringe! Shudder! I'm not making this up!!! (well, maybe the bit about the Alsation . . .)  :o   :P    :(

I hope I haven't scared you too much, Melissa!   :-*

Kerry, Lureen and LaShawn both went to university.  We don't know where Lureen went - probably to the University of Texas - and we know LaShawn met Randall at an "Aggie" game, and that's Texas A&M (Agricultural and Mechanical) University.  We can presume she either went there or went to the rival school in that game.

We don't have spiders that bark or eat birds around here. Ewww. That's disgusting.

I don't know WHAT I would do if something like that came into my house. Yuck! The spiders here are little and cute; most of them are smaller than a large coin.

Ah, yes, of course, I now remember the conversation between Lureen and LaShawn. I'd forgotten it. I guess my attention was rivetted onto Jack in that scene (and every other scene!)

Hmm, "cute spider"? I love ya dearly, buddy, but I can't bring myself to agree with you on that one, David!  Shudder, shudder, shudder and shudder again!  I guess I really do have a phobia about these god-awful creatures. Just thinking about them makes me wanna barf! We also have little spiders here in Oz, but they ain't cute! Nooooo, sir! Deadly, but not cute! One such, is the little Red Back Spider. It's body is shiny black (no nasty fur!), smaller than your little-finger nail, with a cheerful bright splash of fire-engine red on its back. Don't be fooled into believing it's "cute." The Red Back Spider is related to the American Black Widow Spider and can kill you within hours! Luckily, there are antidotes available for all these spiders now, but once upon a time, if you got bitten, you died!

Living in Tropicopolis, aka suburban South Florida, we get some pretty exotic looking bugs.  Take palmetto bugs.  Please.  Imagine, if you will, a cockroach the size of a small dog.  With wings.  But our spiders, for the most part, are pretty tame - maybe because the geckos keep their population down to dull roar.  I almost never see one, inside or out.

Now, up in Western New York and by a lake, I saw spiders the size of small tarantulas.  Didn't like those guys much.  I also saw a couple of Praying Mantises (Manti?).  Those things will freak you out.  They're about as long as your forearm and look at you with a cocked head like they think they might have met you in the bar the other night but they're not sure.

Most snakes I've ever come across are harmless, too.  But coral snakes live down here and they're deadly.  They always live by salt water, though, and we don't have much by us.  The canals are rife with them, I hear.  Their bite can kill a large dog or a small child.

Kerry, on an entirely different note, I must say you're a boy after my own heart.  It's hard for me to notice Lureen's and LaShawn's conversation in that scene, too - I'm too busy watching Jake brush the ashes off himself and wishing I were that hand of his (o, to be a glove upon that hand...).  But after watching the film about 20 times, it finally registered that the two of them did apparently at least attend college.

Wow, that's a great idea you've given me, Barbara! I sometimes fantasize about relocating to upstate New South Wales when I retire, purchase a small rural holding (5 acres?) with a cute little cottage on it, which I will re-name Cherry Cake Cottage. One of the things that holds me back is the thought of all those mean, nasty ol' spiders in the deep, dark Aussie bush! What an excellent idea it is to introduce a substantial population of cutie-pie little geckos into the area. I love geckos and they would keep those homicidal spiders at bay (not the bird-eating spiders though, but they're mainly in Queensland fortunately!).

You mentioning small tarantulas reminds me - I was driving to work across Sydney Harbour Bridge a couple of weeks ago, doing approx 60kph, in the inside lane, traffic coming straight at me from the other direction, when what should appear from somewhere under the dashboard, but a large Huntsman Spider!!! God only knows how it got inside my car! Spiders are such devious bastards! This has happened before, and because of my phobia, I always carry a fly-swatter in my car, just incase I need to dispatch a spider in my car!!! This Huntsman (they look like small tarantulas) was making a bee-line, at speed,  for the steering-wheel! I had an immediate phobic reaction, panic response, and I could have very easily swerved into the oncoming traffic. Somehow I managed to retain some semblance of control, reached for my trusty fly-swatter, and returned that ugly SOB to his Maker!!! Because it was such a frenzied attack on my part (he was splattered gooood!), I laughed later, thinking about what the car behind me must have thought I was doing!!!

Luckily, there are antidotes available for all these spiders now, but once upon a time, if you got bitten, you died!

I once had a pet tarantula when I was a teenager. Her name was Synergy. I called her Sinni. I had her for several years too. I kept her in an empty aquarium, and it was decorated like a desert. Once she escaped out of the tank. She had crawled into my cowboy boot and spun a web in there. She ended up dying of old age. She was very sweet. I was bitten by her a few times, but surprisingly, she wasn't poisonous. When she bit me it felt like a wasp sting. But I was only bit by her during the first few months I owned her. She quickly learned who I was and stopped biting me.

The pet shop told me to feed her live mice or small fish. But I couldn't do that. So I bought dead mice and fish from the shop. The pet shop would freeze the dead mice or fish so they were still very fresh when I brought them home. I would hold them by the tail and drag them around the inside of the aquarium until she pounced on them.

She could jump too! She could jump 6 or 7 feet across the room. I would take her out of her aquarim and let her crawl on my arms. Sometimes she would jump off of me. haha. When I picked her up, she would raise her front legs up. I guess this was her defense position. But like I said, she quit biting me after the first several months. The best way to pick up a tarantula is by the torso.

She was a good spider.  :)

I don't think they sell tarantulas anymore; at least not in Indiana. I also owned a few pet turtles when I was a kid. I don't think they sell turtles anymore either.

They used to sell baby ducks too. They would dye them different colors for Easter. I always thought that was very cruel, so I never owned a baby duck as a pet.

But I really loved Synergy. If they still sold pet tarantulas, I would probably get another one. They make excellent pets if you are patient with them.

The recluse spiders here in Indiana sound a bit like the Red Back spider you were describing, Kerry. They have a design on their back, and it looks a bit like a violin.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Can you see the "violin" on his back? This is the tell tale sign of the recluse. Indianapolis is on the extreme northern edge of their natural range. There are no recluse spiders 75 miles north of me, but they can be a huge problem here in Indianapolis.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Fortunately I have never seen one in my house.

The bite of a recluse spider is sometimes fatal. Most of the time though, the bite will leave a very nasty wound, especially if it goes untreated.

!!! WARNING - The following pictures of a recluse spider bite are extremely graphic and gruesome!!!

Yeah, Texas, we got black widow spiders AND brown recluses. :-\  I work on the 4th floor of an office building in a sea of concrete and last summer two women on the same floor as me got bitten by recluses.  The whole building had to be fumigated.  Twice.

I don't particularly care for spiders, but I don't hate them because they do such wonderful things like eat mosquitos.  I just wish they did their spider thing outside of my home rather than in.  I will try to trap them and toss them outside.  Luckily in the city, I don't have much contact with snakes.  But friends of mine do get bitten by rattlers when hunting or - in my favorite scenario - are fishing for bass along the banks in the shade on Caddo Lake, the only 'natural' lake in Texas.  It's on the border with Louisiana and is also something of a swamp.  So there's alligators and the normal fauna of a swamp there.

Problem is, bass like to be in the shade along the bank.  If it's shady that means there are trees overhead.  Snakes - copperheads and cottonmouths and coral snakes, all poisonous - like to hunt birds in the trees.  And if they finish hunting in one tree and are over the water, they won't climb back down, they just drop into the water and swim back to shore.

Yeah, my friends carried a shotgun for such occasions as poisonous snakes falling out of the trees and on them or into their boat, but they had to keep in mind that they're in a boat and alligators are in the water as well.

  ;D

That was a sweet spider story David.  She was a good spider.  :'( sniff

Yes, my fried chicken is very good! People love my fried chicken! People come all the way over from the UK to eat it!  ;)

But there are so many other things I am awful at. I don't think my fried chicken is enough to designate me a good cook.

My Mother used to tell me I couldn't boil water, even if someone else filled the pot and put it on the stove for me!  >:(

But I sure can fry up some tasty chicken!  :D

Ohhhhhhh, Daaaaa-viiiiiiiiiiid!!!!!!   :'(    :'(    :'(

You have just traumatised me beyond belief!   :o    :'(

I really do have a morbid, irrational fear of spiders, and reading your story (it was very difficult for me to read it) brought on the old familiar gag-reflex I know so well! I literally (yes, literally - did I mention this phobia of mine is morbid and irrational?) jumped outa my seat when I scrolled down to the pic of that spider. Ugh! Cringe! Tremble! I think I'll go have a lie-down now! But I'll be checking under the bed first! I've already checked under the desk!

I might have a gin and tonic (or two or three!) before I take that nap!

It was very thoughtful of you to post all those spider links, David. Alas, I did not click on any of them. But thank you for posting them for other members (more courageous than me) to view!   :-\   :P  (I think I'm still smiling . . .)  ;)  :)

Oh, I'm sorry Kerry! I didn't mean to do that to you!  :(

But, just like Delalluvia said, spiders are very important animals. They help to rid the world of other nasty critters. So, they have a good side to them too.

But I don't blame you! I don't like spiders in my house or car either! (Unless it's a pet spider like Synergy)  :)

We have Praying Mantises here too Barb! Yeah, they are a bit weird looking, but they are quite friendly! They won't hurt you.

A funny thing happened to me with a praying mantis many years ago. I was shopping at the local market and became aware that people were looking at me strangely (more strangely than usual lol!) and laughing. I checked my fly. Nope, no problem there. Gave myself a look up and down to make sure I hadn't spilt any food on myself. Nope again. And then I saw it! Just out the corner of my eye! This funny little bobbing green head, close to my right eye! It was a large, green praying mantis, sitting on my right shoulder, head bobbing, doing what praying mantis' do best . . . praying! That was what everyone was looking at! I have no idea how he got there. I may have brushed against some shrubbery on my way to the store. There was always some kid or other with a praying mantis as a pet when I was at school, so I wasn't scared by my new-found friend. I gently took him off my shoulder and took him outside. Yeah, I don't mind praying mantises. They're cool!

David, you can buy tarantulas at the pet shop at the local shopping mall near where I live. I read about it in the local paper. I haven't been to see them for myself! Gulp! Shudder! Cold sweat!

Good for you Kerry!  :)

Way to go!!! This is the kind of anecdote I love to hear! A happy ending for both the person and the animal!

The Praying Mantises around here are very friendly and gentle. It almost seems as if they actually like humans and enjoy being around us. It's a shame when people try to kill them. They are very weird looking, but they are completely harmless; the gentle giants of the insect world.   :D

Yes, they are very sweet, gentle creatures. They do, however, have very exotic sex lives. The female praying mantis eats her mate, after he has finished having sex with her! Ouch!  Sounds, to me, like a very convincing reason for being gay, if you happen to be a male praying mantis!

A praying mantis got inside our house by the lake once.  Scared the bejesus out of me at first because it was just so BIG.  (Spiders don't bother me, but BIG bugs do.)  Still I was fascinated by it.  I swear it looked at me like I was someone it knew.  I wanted to catch it and release it back outside, but didn't know how to other than to pick it up.  And I didn't want to do that.  So I called my father in, and like Kerry, he gently picked it up and set it outside near some shrubs, well away from the door.

In New York state back then, I believe there was something like a $500 fine for killing one.  But why anyone (who isn't a sick bastard) would want to kill one, I don't know.  They look like little E.T.'s.

No more beans!

Yeah, I'm surprised ALL the males aren't gay. I wonder why she does that? Talk about a heinous bitch!  >:(

She has shown me photos of Spokane and it looks like a pretty place. Famous for its cherries and as the birth place of Bing Crosby (if I remember correctly).

With her, though, it's a case of "their gain is our loss"!

1. Do you have a low startle point? yes, especially when it has to do with Detroit

2. Are you as bad as Jack is at cooking? No, and Jack actually was a good cook, at least a fine potato parer

3. Ever shot an elk or other animal? No but I have shot a lot of targets in target practice

4. Was your dad right? Yes, sometimes. He was a child of the Depression and taught me to economize and make the best of every situation. He also told me that I could do anything I set my mind to do.

5. Ever drunk whiskey straight out of the bottle? Certainly, it's good "neat."

6. Ever slept on the ground beside a campfire? Yes, on the beach, and I hope to do it again.

7. Ever lived in an apartment above a laundromat (or other retail establishment)? I used to live in an apartment over a florist shop, and I would go "dumpster diving" for flowers after they closed.

8. Are you as good a horseback rider as Lureen -- or can you stay on the horse, anyway? Well, one time a horse took off at a gallop with me on its back, and I stayed on all the way to the barn.

9. Do you know someone named Jack? Yes, my father in law, and he had fishing buddies. Also my friend Jack (brokebackjack).

10. Ever contacted a romantic partner via postcard? No, but once my boyfriend sent a postcard to me telling me how he "missed my sweet a**" and he sent it to the house where I lived with my parents!!

11. Do you ever bring home freshly caught fish? Yes, in the summer, and other times, from the Oriental market.

12. Are you worse than Bobby when it comes to losing stuff? No, I hardly ever lose anything!

13. Ever socialized with the fire-and-brimstone crowd?" Yes, when my children were young, but I tired of it eventually.

14. Would somebody looking around your home comment that you need more furniture? No, no way.

15.. Do you watch TV during dinner? No, not on yr f***ing life!

16. Ever used an electric knife? Um, no, but I have used a chain saw.

17. Did you pledge Tri Delt -- or some other sorority or fraternity? Absolutely not.

18. Do you remember (or know) how it is, being broke all the time? For sure.

19. Did your mother keep your bedroom the way it was when you were a kid? No, certainly not. I hope to do better by my kids.

20. Have you ever scattered someone's ashes? I have scattered my cat's ashes and I stand by to scatter any other friend's ashes that might need it. And I want my ashes to end up on Brokenback Mountain!!

1. Do you have a low startle point?  Yes, but I like a hightened state of awareness!

2. Are you as bad as Jack is at cooking?  I was never taught how and was scared of it for a long time. But I'm finally getting better! People seem to like my food!

3. Ever shot an elk or other animal?  No.

4. Was your dad right?  Most of the time. (He was a professor; not much for teaching everyday practical stuff, but would talk on and on and on and on about more esoteric shite...)

5. Ever drunk whiskey straight out of the bottle?  Yes — it's the only hard liquor that tastes good by itself, IMO.

6. Ever slept on the ground beside a campfire?  Don't remember. But I'm so entranced by them that I'll sit + stare for several hours straight in a state of total hypnosis.

7. Ever lived in an apartment above a laundromat (or other retail establishment)?  Nope

8. Are you as good a horseback rider as Lureen -- or can you stay on the horse, anyway?  Can stay on — that's about it.

9. Do you know someone named Jack?  My earliest memories involve a man named Jack, another professor + good friend of my parents. He had a great dry wit, & loved my dad's homebrew. I literally remember climbing out of my crib and going to the den where they were sipping it. One time my folks had a backyard party, with the kind of cheese that comes in the red wax. He took some wax, molded it into a tiny doll shape, and gave it to me.

10. Ever contacted a romantic partner via postcard?  Yeah, hopefully those are all thrown out by now! ::)

11. Do you ever bring home freshly caught fish?  Never been able to catch any! But I LOVE fresh fish!!

12. Are you worse than Bobby when it comes to losing stuff?  Used to be. Gotten better though.

13. Ever socialized with the fire-and-brimstone crowd?  Yeah I used to — a LOT. I lived in the deep south and was like a fire-and-brimstone crowd magnet! (I was like, WTF — is everyone in the world this way?)

14. Would somebody looking around your home comment that you need more furniture?  No

15.. Do you watch TV during dinner?  Try not to. I think it's a bad habit; I like to fully experience food!

16. Ever used an electric knife?  Hell no. ("Clumsy as I am, prolly get electrocuted...")

17. Do you remember (or know) how it is, being broke all the time?  Regrettably, yeah.

18. Did your mother keep your bedroom the way it was when you were a kid?  She did, out of sheer inertia — now it's set up for grandkids!

20. Have you ever scattered someone's ashes?  No. My family basically has no concern whatsoever with remains — they figure if they're dead, they're dead...   :P
