How Are You Celebrating Spring?
« on: March 05, 2007, 10:23:37 am »
With apologies to our Southern Hemisphere members, I would like to get some ideas on celebrating spring. For starters I began my spring cleaning, the repotting of my houseplants, and clearing snow off the deck. What are your spring plans??

I love Spring. It's my favorite season!

Yard work!! I can't wait to get outside and work in my yard. I love yard work. I also plan on doing some jogging, bike riding, hiking and taking my dog to the park where I play frisbee with him.  :)

I also love to camp and swim.

I always do a thorough housecleaning in early spring. The office upstairs still needs to be painted and the carpeting pulled up and replaced.

I LOVE Spring!  :D

There was heavy frost on the ground here this a.m. But later it's supposed to be 70 degrees!

That's March for you!

My FRiend EDelMar said St. Patrick's Day has just become a day for drinking and there was an NPR story about Romans celebrating the Ides of March with a drunken debauch...we need new rituals for these holidays! Let me know yours.

Well, I live in Ireland and tomorrow everybody is going to be more drunk than usual.. lololol Bear in mind that I don't drink, so I'm usually the only sober person of the whole group... It's going to be great fun tomorrow anyway! Plus, the rugby match Italy-Ireland is on tomorrow!

I have a question for you. A girl named Erin told me her name means Ireland. Is that correct?

That is correct. For more info:

"Erin is a Hiberno-English derivative of Irish Gaelic Éirinn, the dative case of Éire, the Irish word for "Ireland". Nineteenth-century Irish nationalists also used Erin in English as a romantic name for Ireland, as shown in the catchphrase (when speaking of Ireland's experiences with Britain), "Let Erin Remember". According to Irish mythology and folklore, the name was given to the land by the Milesians after the goddess Ériu. Erin Go Bragh (Éireann Go Brách, in standard orthography), often heard during St. Patrick's Day, means "Ireland Forever". The etymological history of the word as it drifted throughout the Gaelic region gave rise to its use by the early Scots to both mean "Ireland", as well as "West", as Ireland lay to the geographic west of Scotland.

Erin is a popular modern name for both sexes, alternatively spelled as Eryn, Erynn, Eirinn, Aeryn, Eiryne or otherwise. It also contributed to many surnames, as well, for example "Erin-Vienne" (West Man/Irish Man) gave rise to the surnames of Irving, Irvine, Ervin, Irwin, Eryvine, Ervyne, etc. There are over 200 known derivations of the Erin root."

Well, if all goes according to plan, this spring will be marked by a good week or so of vacation for me, which will comprise of a trip to Estes Park, Colorado. This will be the first time I will have left the State of Texas in about seventeen years, and the first time I will have returned to Colorado in well over twenty-five!

The etymological history of the word as it drifted throughout the Gaelic region gave rise to its use by the early Scots to both mean "Ireland", as well as "West", as Ireland lay to the geographic west of Scotland.
Additionally, 'Eire', from which 'Ireland' is derived, is descended from the Proto-Indo-European root aryo-, which meant "noble"--this is the origin of the term 'Aryan', which has acquired unfortunate connotations due to Nazi abuse, but which I understand is still in dignified usage in modern India. 'Iran' also derives from the same Indo-European root; 'Iran' and 'Ireland' both can be understood to mean 'land of the noble'.

The etymological stuff about Ireland was very interesting!  I love that kind of stuff.

Let's see, Spring.  Ostara is next week, I celebrate by cleaning and purifying and putting up my spring decorations on my altars and finally putting away my holiday decorations.  ;D

Tomorrow is the traditional St. Patty's day parade in my neighborhood - which is pretty much a kiss to crass consumerism, being a local merchant's parade - but hey, they throw beads and bread and give away stuff.

I hope you meant mopping rather than moping, Ruby. No wait...I hope you meant neither!! So is it mud season in your house LOL? I myself finally got all the snow off the deck last Sunday!

I had to change my vote on this poll...to shopping!! Last nite I bought a dozen blouses and jackets in bright spring colors and not one but two pairs of cowboy boots!! Yee-haw!!

Spring...finally! !   It's like music to my ears when I hear that word!   After this winter here in Central NewYork I can't wait to get out of this house!   First thing I am going to do is go to Atlantic City in  NewJersey at the end of this month with some good friends.   But wait..I'll have to go shopping first, I'll need some new clothes for the trip of coarse!  And I  definitely think I will need a makeover before I go too!

As far as spring cleaning goes..I did allot of that during my winter confinement. Although I do intend to do alot of yard work when I get back!  But If I hit it big at the casino's in Atlantic city , I'll sit back and watch someone else do my yardwork for me! :)

I'll be going out of town for the latter half of next week, just to Minneapolis, but I'll get to see some friends. Yay!

And whenever the temperature is above 60 -- as it's supposed to be here in a day or two -- I feel compelled to be outside, at least for a long walk.

How am I celebrating Spring? I guess I'll give that question more consideration when we get through Autumn and Winter. It won't be Spring here in Australia until September! Something to look forward to!  :D

I had my first glimpse of wildflowers yesterday morning, while being driven to work. There were a clutch of bluebonnets, and a whole plethora of yellow flowers, the name of which I do not know, and no one at work seems able to name as well. Looking at the wildflowers as a venerable rite of spring, and it made me happy to see these first (for me) of the season.

By the way, if anyone can help on the name of the yellow wildflowers, I'd be most obliged. :)

Do you have a picture of them? There are so many yellow wildflowers of the daisy variety that here in these parts we call them DYCs (damn yellow composites) because it's so hard to identify one from another! You have to look at the leaves, stems, and how the petals are arranged and how many rays, also the color of the centers.

I've seen some spring beauties here and candytuft. Also, the irises are starting to sprout!!

It has been so wet this winter that I'm betting my favorite wildflower, the Mariposa Lily, will appear! It only appears in wet seasons. I'm looking forward to showing it to you and your mom, personally!!

I'll have photos here soon!!

FRiend Lee, I got my answer this morning! My driver Mike had asked another customer of his if by chance he knew the name of these yellow wildflowers, and the man replied that they are Black-eyed Susans, and are members of the marigold family. So my knowledge continues to broaden, as I enjoy these colorful assets to life in Texas.

I always get the cleaning bug in the spring.  I love throwing open the windows and letting the winter dust out.  I also love being able to get outside and hike/walk.  There is nothing like a spring day to enjoy a nice long walk.  Also, I'm planning on heading over to Seattle sometime soon.  Now that snow/traction tires aren't required to cross the mountain pass I feel comfortable heading over to enjoy Puget Sound, Pike's Place market and meeting up with a few friends.

Since it's still usually in the mid-40s here and cloudy and rainy, the most I've been able to do so far is buy a bunch of daffodils for the kitchen table.

Still waiting for spring this year, so nothing to celebrate yet  :(.

My personal marker to decide it's officially spring is when I hang up the laundry outside for the first time of the year. In winter I use my tumbler, but in spring and summer, I let my laundry dry outdoors.

This activity is ususally followed by putting up a deck chair and taking a sun bath  :).
Then it's spring and both activities are my way of celebrating. Even hanging up the laundry is fun then (but the sun bath more ).
