Very random questions that pop to mind when thinking of BBM:
« on: April 19, 2006, 04:16:09 pm »
Very random indeed!

What do you think: would a couple of high altitude f*cks once or twice a year increase the number of red corpuscles in the blood?

Any opinions? Any other silly questions?

Would a 185 lbs man that's been thrown from a horse be able to make a dent in a harmonica?
...then you ask me about Mexico and tell me you'll kill me for needing somethin' I don't hardly never get.

Did Jack pack a case of whiskey at the beginning of the summer, or is there always whiskey on the shopping list?
Watch out. That poster has a low startle point.

LOL!  ;D

Why did Ennis think the tent didn't look right?  :-\

What exactly happened after the boys started wrestling, when Aguirre saw them?   [I have thought about this more than a few times...what really 'went down'? (or up, as the case may be) ...] ;D

No, there's a whisky spring up on Brokeback. Man, what were you doing when Lureen explained that round the end of the movie?? ;)

Now, here we have finally something I think I can answer:

Why did Ennis think the tent didn't look right? = He thought it would look better from inside with Jack next to him, or on top of him, that is.

What exactly happened after the boys started wrestling, when Aguirre saw them?
= They pitched two additional tents, although they already had one (the one that didn't look right);

what really 'went down'? (or up, as the case may be) = Up, Lucise, up! I mean everybody's blood pressure... (Aguirre's included);

Always glad when I can be of help...

What would LaShawn Malone do if she ever attended a "silent auction"?

Did Ennis and Jack ever....*ahem*..bathe together in the river, then chase each other about naked or God forbid, chop any wood in the nude?  :-\

When the boys parted after Brokeback, Jack drives off and Ennis follows on foot.   Why the hell didn't Jack offer Ennis a ride?   They were going the same direction!   :-\

That's funny because after my husband FINALLY saw it, that's the one thing that annoyed him, was Jack not giving Ennis a ride.

Bingo! That's what I was asking myself all the time, too (always having in mind the perfectly avarage-sized Heinz-Soup cans, of course...);

What if one of the bikers that Ennis beat up would've turned out to be Lureen's dad?

What if John Twist accidently drank from his "spit" cup at the dinner table?

The summer before '63, when Jack was almost asphyxiated, was he up there alone?
Did he tend camp and herd sheep...hmmm.

This is funny because I was just about to write this very thing in a post today in another thread, when suddenly I began to doubt myself: Had he actually offered and Ennis turned it down and I'm just not remembering that part? I'm so glad you guys confirmed my original question.

This is a hilarious thread, BTW.

When Ennis told Jack that he couldn't be with him because he had the girls for the weekend ...  why didn't Jack just stick around for a few days?  He could have stayed in Riverton or taken a quick trip up to Lightning Flat and stopped on his way back.  Why didn't Ennis just say 'Hang on, bud, fer a couple days...  I'll make it worth yer wait.'   :-*

How would Ennis have reacted if Jack had arrived on Monday, after the girls were gone?  He was out in the middle of nowhere all alone---  no excuses!  Would the driver of the white truck (or any of the 10 people Jack spoke to in Riverton!) think anything other than Ennis had a fishing buddy visiting?  They wouldn't need to know about all the hot man-love taking place in that desolated old farmhouse  ;)        I guess Jack was hurt just enough being rebuffed by Ennis that Mexico seemed like the only available salve for his bruised ego.

Well, now this is interesting...  Jack does tip his hat to Alma.  But, I agree. I also thought that cowboys were supposed to take their hats off inside.  But, there are tons and tons of scenes where they wear their hats inside.  In the bar at the beginning, Jack in the bar with Jimbo and with Lureen, the guys who are sitting in Lureens office and look out the window to make fun of Jack's lack-luster rodeo skills,  and at the dance with LaShawn and Randall, etc.  So, even at nice, "respectable" events like the dance where Jack meets Randall, all the men seem to wear their hats inside.  I don't get it.

Why didn't Jack show more interest in Ennis's children? This virtual apathy on Jack's part towards the offspring of his lover and best friend has always puzzled me; I know that I would cherish the children of someone who I loved as much as Jack did Ennis.

Examples: When Ennis brings Jack up to meet Alma, and Jack learns of Ennis's two girls, why didn't he ask to see them? When Jack shows up after the divorce, and Ennis introduces him to his daughters, they make perfunctory hellos, but after Ennis rebuffs Jack (to the pain of both of them), why didn't Jack step back over to the truck and make some charming goodbye to his lover's children? I could imagine him saying something like, "It sure was nice to meet you girls. You keep your old dad out of trouble, hear?"

If nothing else, Jack might have ingratiated himself with Ennis even more by showing more interest in his children, and evincing more sympathy for Ennis's position in regard to them.

Just some thoughts...

Interesting.  Is it possible because Movie Jack was to reflect Story Jack who didn't want no kids?  He loves his own son, but many people only love their kids, but not other people's kids.

I do suspect it might have had something to do with Jack wanting Ennis all for himself, and seeing the girls as an intrusion into his dreams involving Ennis. This idea saddens me, as the children are innocents in all of this, and Ennis clearly loves them with all his heart. Jack's apathy suggests a smattering of selfishness on his part that I don't like to consider, seeing what a tender and nurturing soul he is in so many other respects.

Hmm..Interesting questions added so far.  :)

- Where would we all be if Annie Proulx had never penned this beautiful story?  :-\

- What if the events were reversed and instead of Jack and Ennis meeting and falling in love, Lureen and Alma did?  Could you even picture Ennis saying: "Alma, you don't go up there to fish! Lureen Newsome? Lureen Nasty.."? lol

Now now.  Not all of us like kids - I sure don't.  Can we not have the 'because you don't like kids you must be selfish' thing?

Don't think I'm awful, but I have some wonderful dear friends who have children, and I haven't the slightest interest in these kids.  Can't remember their names half the time.  No - we're not lovers, but you'd expect at least some interest on my part.  I feel the same way about some kids I'm actually related too as well.  Just can't even get a single smidgen of interest toward them.

And for Jack, those kids are Ennis's perfect excuse to never be with him...

Oh, I think that's perfectly OK. Ennis was probably thinking anyway: Hey Dude, you get me Jack F*ckin' Twist and she's all yours, hunh!?

Would the driver of the white truck (or any of the 10 people Jack spoke to in Riverton!) think anything other than Ennis had a fishing buddy visiting?

No, they wouldn't think twice about it. And on that note, why is Ennis OK about checking into a motel room with Jack for a night of hot sex, but gets nervous about being seen casually chatting in the driveway?

When the boys parted after Brokeback, Jack drives off and Ennis follows on foot.   Why the hell didn't Jack offer Ennis a ride?   They were going the same direction!   :-\

That was very impolite of Jack, considering all the rides Ennis had given him that summer. ...  ;)

Why didn't Jack take his hat off when he met Alma?  Cowboys always take their hats off indoors...

When you're drinking in a bar, the most convenient place for your hat is on your head. Trust me on this one.

It is a little surprising that they had their hats on at the charity dinner-dance, but I'm presuming there was no place to check them. It can be very difficult to keep a cowboy hat on your lap at the dinner table. Trust me on this one, too.

It was inexcusably rude of Jack not to take off his hat in the presence of Alma. He could have held it in front of his crotch. ...

Not to change the subject, but how did they transport all that camping gear away from the parking lot when they only had two riding horses?

Melinda (pages back):

I think the whole point was that Jack had arrived, he thought, for all time, and that Ennis hadn't giving "for all time" a thought.  They already had arrangements to meet the following month...or did you mean, givien more leasure and the lack of the girlds, Ennis might have given Jack's  permanent presernce in his life more considferation? I don't think so...not till after Jack was dead...

Maybe Alma's real reason for wanting to move into town was so she could use the laundromat downstairs rather than scrub clothes on a washboard all day.

Heh.  Give you the answer.  If you put clothes on while they're still damp?  Your body heat dries them slowly and it's like putting them in the dryer.

Or else - in Ennis' case - his shirts are so ill-fitting and small that he literally stretches the wrinkles out. :)

Did Ennis ever find the postcard that Alma hid inside the supermarket flyer? If so, how? If not, how did he know when the next rendezvous would be?

For that matter, why didn't Alma just throw the postcard in the garbage?

Okay, here's my burning random question. What's so satisfying about pivoting your head around while keeping the eyes tightly closed? I tried it, but was annoyed by the crunching noises in my neck and then I got dizzy and almost fell off the bed. And, related to this, what is so arousing about talking about moving to a sordid 5-room apartment above a laundromat? Okay, I grant you that the vibrations from the hi speed dryers might be mildly exciting, and the veil of steam constantly surrounding the joint might provide a smidgeon of ambiance. But talking about it is nothing that would arouse me to a near orgasmic state much less prepare me for the bestial treatment that is to come!

Here's what I found:

Some standard, base-line points of etiquette:

¨  Any time you enter a building, the hat should come off.
¨  If it is an informal occasion you may put it back on but for a formal occasion it should stay off.
¨  When sitting down at a table for a meal, the hat should come off unless there is nowhere to safely lay the hat.
¨  When sitting down at a counter for a meal, the hat can stay on.
¨  Out on the range however, keep your hat on while you eat. If you take your hat off, another wrangler might step on it or spill food into the rim.

Now all of the above rules are frequently ignored or modified depending on the locale, the situation, the people etc.  So use your best judgment and if in doubt, stick to the above rules to be sure you're not offending anyone's sensibilities.

I've always thought there was something particularly elegant about the cowboy greeting, touching one's hand to the brim of one's hat.  A part of the origin of this was that when men would meet, moving the hand to the hat brim signaled friendly intentions by moving the hand away from the holster.  Tipping of the cowboy hat when meeting someone depends completely upon the situation but it does show good breeding and respect.

Jack really probably should have taken his hat off.  He was probably a little too out of it/excited to think about it.  Or maybe he figured they wouldn't be in the apartment long enough!

As I recall, Alma's use of the word "lonely" is the pivotal moment here. This seems to trigger Ennis's thoughts in Jack's direction, and he responds to the person beside him in the way he would really wish to be behaving with Jack. The talk of the apartment above the laundromat was incidental in this subtle evocation of Ennis's very real loneliness and its true nature.

How did they butcher the elk and slice those nice, even, and thin peices of steak?  Why were they not worn out from all of that cutting?   ???  Yes, they are strong, manly cowboys and I'd expect nothing less.  Nonetheless...it is curious.

This is more of a statment, than question.  Why couldn't they put Alma in a dress that fits her boobies?  Everytime I see the scene when she catches them, I want to pull that sweater dress closed.

I'm sure the contents of Ennis's brown paper 'traveling bag' is a subject that has already been discussed, but....  what do YOU think was in the bag?  A shirt? A pair of socks?  Boxers or briefs?  It didn't seem to be heavy or big enough to have contained a second pair of jeans.  Where do you think the yellow rain slicker came from?  Jack had on a different jacket that day, too. I noticed that Ennis's luggage was upgraded to a cloth feedbag coming back from the mountain.   Do you think Ennis had his own Zippo lighter when he went up on Brokeback that summer?  If he did, then perhaps asking to use Jack's lighter in the bar could have been an excuse to brush his hand against Jack's while taking the lighter from him?  Okay, that was me 'projecting'.... (!)  But---  if he did NOT have his own lighter, how did he light his cigarettes while he was up there with the sheep by himself?  I like to think that the Zippo that Ennis is flicking as he waits for his reunion smooch-fest was a gift from Jack....maybe it WAS Jack's--  Jack may have generously given his own lighter to Ennis, and Ennis was able to hold it in his hand every day for all those years and feel closer to Jack.  (Aw, c'mon, let me have this one, it's tamer than most of my fantasies!)   ;)

Did Jack and Ennis eat supper between the "I ain't queer" scene and the second tent scene? And if so, how did they manage to open the cans of beans without slicing up their hands, given how difficult it was for Jack to open a can when Ennis was just taking his boots off?

Did all that elk jerky attract any more bears?

Did Ennis and Jack really sleep in Jack's truck together on that first night? If so, how did two tall young men manage to sleep in the cab of a truck without ending up all sprawled out across one another?

And about the lighter... how did Ennis light the cigarette he's smoking as the train goes by at the beginning of the movie?
Watch out. That poster has a low startle point.

Oooo...  good, point nakymaton, about the cigarette that Ennis is already smoking!  My 'hoping to graze Jack's hand' theory is coming to fruition  ;D .  I suppose Ennis could have had some matches in his pocket, and figured using Jack's lighter would conserve the matches, just as he was conserving his cigarette and his one beer.  Well, shoot.

Sash: (I like the name!)--several have commented that Ennis's first truck was an EXACT replica of Jack's old one that he had in '63--except the driver's-side door was a little off-color. Kinda nice to think he bought it cause it was just like the one  Jack had that summer.

tHERE WAS ACTUALLY SOME SPECULATION THAT IT was THE SAME TRUCK...BUT i THINK jACK'S HAD DIED A NOISY DEATH before Ennis got his..

More ?s:

- Did Ennis ever 'check out' other guys?  On the street? In the pub?  In the ranches where he worked?  I am sure he might have seen other men that 'tickled his fancy', even though he was not interested in pursuing any of them.

- Was Randall really 'not mechanical' as LaShawn claims?  I think that since he was a rancher, he'd know a thing or two about machinery.  But then again, she was probably too busy talking him into a slow, excruciating death to notice whether he was mechanically-inclined or not.

How would LaShawn know that the husbands didn't have a 'smidgen of rhythm between 'em'?  She may have been right about 'Ole Randall here', but we all know Jack has rhythm to spare.  She hadn't seen him dance......  what's with the wisecracks, Missy?!   This lively little gal got to find out for herself.  Lucky LaShawn dancing with Jack?  YES.  Lucky Anna Faris dancing with Jake?  O-H-H-H, yes!   ;)

Guess Ennis was too busy worrying that other people were checking HIM out...there's no indication, anywhere, that Ennis ever gave a thought to another guy. Kinda weird..not one thought...

I thought Jack danced pretty well...and how would Leshawn know anyway, before she danced with him? (unless they'd gone out together before, which they apparently hadn't--it was all because of Randall's pickup breaking down that the two couples were together to begin with). Compare Jack's dancing to Ennis's...

Concerning the lighter question - maybe there'll be a deleted scene on the dvd special edition everybody seems to be expecting:

Jack: Damm it, I can't believe I forgot my fuckin' lighter up on that mountain!

Not to change the subject, but how did they transport all that camping gear away from the parking lot when they only had two riding horses?

J, I definitely wondered this one after watching the DVD a few days ago.  In the second-to-last camping scene, they are by a river, and because the tent is set up, and because of what they must have been doing in the tent, I have to believe it would be a camp set "way the hell out in the back of nowhere" - so how the hell did they get that giant red Coleman cooler up there?  Balanced on the horse's head!?

Yeah, and if that had been the case, would Alma have had a digestive handy for him??   ???

Not to change the subject, but how did they transport all that camping gear away from the parking lot when they only had two riding horses?

J, I definitely wondered this one after watching the DVD a few days ago.  In the second-to-last camping scene, they are by a river, and because the tent is set up, and because of what they must have been doing in the tent, I have to believe it would be a camp set "way the hell out in the back of nowhere" - so how the hell did they get that giant red Coleman cooler up there?  Balanced on the horse's head!?

Good question.  Only answer I can think of is that they might have made more than one trip.  Just because we saw them riding together doesn't mean they were actually going to where they were camping.  Perhaps they had already set up camp and were just riding for pleasure and to talk/not talk.

As for the Zippo lighter question, in those days, cigarettes were 'part of' supplies, I'm sure.  Matches would have been as well.  You don't think they lit that campfire by rubbing two sticks together, did you?   ;D

No, certainly not. But they lit some other fire by rubbing their foreheads together...

When the boys parted after Brokeback, Jack drives off and Ennis follows on foot.   Why the hell didn't Jack offer Ennis a ride?   They were going the same direction!   :-\

Ray and I mused about this, David - actually, after a couple of glasses of white wine, "musing" consisted pretty much of hurling abuse the computer monitor, a la "well, offer him a lift, you stingy bastard!!!" etc. We concluded that if Jack HAD offered Ennis a lift somewhere, and if Ennis DID accept it, you lose an incredibly poignant and wistful sequence of Ennis disappearing in Jack's rearview mirror and Jack fighting the urge to cry about it.

Can you imagine what we'd moan longingly about if they'd driven together into Riverton and Ennis had popped Jack a quick kiss on the cheek or a reassuring squeeze of the thigh with a "see ya in four years, then, hunh?" before jumping out of the pickup and heading over to the post office???

Faaar more romantic and sad and tragic the way Ang shot it.  ;D ;D

bwahahahahahaha!! I love it. ;D

I guess an additional mule or two on those twenty years of trips might not have looked so romantic. "Here we are, off in the beautiful mountains, just the two of us... and our four mules to carry the comfy chairs and the big blue coffee pot and stuff."

Some standard, base-line points of etiquette:

OK, that means I'll probably be keeping my hat on at the Brokie Brunch next week.

I've always thought there was something particularly elegant about the cowboy greeting, touching one's hand to the brim of one's hat.  A part of the origin of this was that when men would meet, moving the hand to the hat brim signaled friendly intentions by moving the hand away from the holster.

Reminiscent of a military salute, too.

There's a short, dialogue-less scene from sometime in the middle years -- they have sideburns but are still smiling happily at each other, as opposed to the cold stony silence of that later riding scene -- that shows Jack at the campsite and Ennis driving up in his truck with a horse trailer attached. I think at that point they rode for fun, not for transportation.

On the first question, no way of knowing because we never see Ennis around any other man who's even remotely attractive. But my guess is that he had his sexuality pretty strictly controlled and compartmentalized. We do see him checking out Jack, but that was only after he'd gotten to know him pretty well, and he immediately caught himself and deliberately turned his attention to other things. Otherwise, he'd gotten pretty good at convincing himself he wasn't interested. (Though Annie Proulx does say she conceived of the character of Ennis after watching an older cowboy wistfully checking out the young guys playing pool ...  :'()

On the second question, my feeling is that when LaShawn complains that her husband is "not mechanical" and doesn't have "a smidgen of rhythm" she is not talking about either machinery or dancing ...

Since when did "fishin'" or "fishin' trip" become a euphemism for having gay sex? First Ennis, then Randall. What's up with that?

Scott M.

Okay, that explains Ennis but not Alma. Her excitement is still a mystery. Or could she have been faking it to get what she wanted?

I hope Ennis found men other than Jack attractive, as strange as that might sound. That kind of thought gives me hope for him at the end, imagining that he could be receptive to becoming intimate with another guy down the road, even if the level of emotion does not approach what he shared with Jack. Besides, it would mean I might have a chance with him myself! (I do love Jack, no sacrilege intended--it's just that it breaks my heart to imagine Ennis growing old alone).

Not so much a question, this one, as an observation (or hypothesis?): Jack's theft of Ennis's shirt might have constituted a not insignificant material loss to our man from Sage, considering his near-poverty at this point in the story, and throughout the film. I wonder how sensitive Jack was to this element, and if his conscience bothered him at any time regarding this act. I have fantasies of Jack presenting Ennis with the gift of a new shirt at some point in their later rendezvous, telling him something like, "Just a little something from me to you, bud...never forgot how you lost that shirt up on Brokeback."

On the other hand, considering Ennis's stubborn pride, he might not have countenanced such a gesture with good grace, and Jack might have known this. Of course, Ennisdid ultimately get the shirt back, but under the saddest of circumstances... :'(

Hiya Pipe,

No biggie, it's just that this scene sticks in my mind because it bugs me when orders aren't filled like I wanted.

I wouldn't have asked for something if I didn't want it/think it important.  And for someone else to fluff off my order or treat them haphazardly is really annoying to me.

I went rummaging and found this lil gem of a file again!  ;)

One or 2 "?"s:

Annie P. says in the novella that Ennis never wore underwear..  8).  Was movie-Ennis also this "unrestricted'?  ::)  I would think that underwear would be welcome protection for one's 'equipment' when riding horses few hours a day... :)

What did the boys dry themselves with after they bathed?  Might sound like a dumb question (ok it is.. ;D), but when they came down from the mountain, Ennis just had this little canvas bag with him.  Could it have held his jeans, extra shirt, towel, and other little things?
The way I work it out is that Jack took Ennis' shirt AND towel ...  ;D

Well, you saw how Ennis washed himself (tongue hanging out).  That's it for bathing - pits and parts.  Maybe feet, but those are easier to clean.  There's not much skin to 'dry'.

I bet that even if Jack had offered Ennis a ride, Ennis would have declined.  It's pretty clear (at least to me) that given the punch and his dismissive attitude during their last conversation that Ennis is trying hard to force himself to detach.  I'm guessing Jack sensed this.  Also, I think Jack was genuinely mad about the punch.  I'm sort of glad that Ennis felt guilty about that for their 4 year separation (I love that it's clearly eating at Ennis enough to bring it up in the motel conversation).

I bet that was at least some of the reason for his distress in the alley scene.

Who told Ennis what there is in Mexico for guys like Jack?

Literarily speaking, it must have been Larry McMurtry. But, in the way that I read the short story weeks before I saw the movie, I believe what Ennis had heard about Mexico had nothing to do with Jack going there to have sex. What he had heard was that queers got killed in Mexico, too, IMO. I have met guys from Mexico who would confirm that fact and that only "bottoms" were considered to be "queer" in same-gender sexual contact, those who were tops could claim to be "straight."

Annie Proulx never wrote in her narrative that Jack even went to Mexico. He only claimed he had been after Ennis asked "Been a Mexico Jack?"

The only reason that Jack even brought up the subject of Mexico in the story was he wanted to meet someplace where it was warmer than the high altitudes of Wyoming. Jack was getting older, he was 39 you know, and the fact that he had all of those bone injuries from riding bulls, he apparently suffered from arthritis and rheumatism, too.

(My older sister's 2nd husband was a rodeo bull rider a long time ago. Many of his current health problems are related to his rodeo days.)

In the book, both of them were driving off in opposite directions. But, I ask the same question as far as the movie is concerned.

And, since Jack's mother was Pentecostal, he would have done what a real country boy and the son of a Christian woman would have done, offered the ride as soon as the truck started.

Well, I have had two Pentecostal sisters who lived with abusive and unbelieving husbands and they believed that it would be against God's will to leave their husbands.

It also might be the case that Mrs. Twist put up with him because she felt trapped in that situation financially speaking. Even Ennis Del Mar felt financially trapped and he used that as one of his excuses for not going into business with Jack and his cow and calf operation.

Since when did "fishin'" or "fishin' trip" become a euphemism for having gay sex? First Ennis, then Randall. What's up with that?

Most gay men I know are made uncomfortable by the thought of fish. ...

Then you don't know me. I have gone on an overnight fishing trip with a friend and we actually fished. We went to the Arkansas River in a pickup truck and when it started to sprinkle we left the bank and got in the cab of the truck and the we "played with our worms."  ;) But, in our case, his wife knew his sexual orientation and she knew that I was gay, too.

Oh, when we were actually fishin', we were using fish (minnows) for bait, not worms.

Was contraception BEFORE you even had one kid a totally alien concept in the 1960's?

No, but there were far fewer options for birth control in 1963, and abortion was NOT spoken aloud by most people. If
Nightmares may be products of our subconscious, but dreams are magic windows through which we see our desired reality.

I watched the DVD for the first time in two weeks last nite and came up with lots of random questions. Here's one: If you want to get yourself knocked up in your T-bird, why park right under a bright street lite??

Would a 185 lbs man that's been thrown from a horse be able to make a dent in a harmonica?

Annie Proulx's Jack Twist more than likely weighed no more than 150 lbs and maybe not even 140. Her Jack was rather short and his big haunch, larger than normal thighs and hips, were not exactly fat. There are many professional bull riders built just like Jack's description in the book. More than likely the flattened harmonica had been in Jack's shirt pocket when he fell off the horse. Or, he could have been playing it when the skittish bay mare threw him off. The ol' gal might have been a music critic.  ;D

To make sure he knew where all the right parts were? ;)
