OMG... this song is one of my all-time faves... love it, love it, LOVE IT!! I'm not sure where Shara is from, but Massive Attack are local boys from Bristol, UK (where I live)! :D

Mine too, Massive Attack has been one of my all-time favourite bands for about 15 years now! I remember they are from Bristol, yes!  :) Do you like any of their other songs?

For me their 2 stand out albums are 'Blue Lines' and 'Mezzanine' (which is so accessible and yet so wierd at the same time - I absolutely adore it and it would definitely be in my top 10 favourite albums of all time). My favourite 3 tracks from each? From 'Blue Lines' it would be 'Unfinished Sympathy', 'Safe From Harm' and 'Day Dreaming', and from 'Mezzanine' (how to choose?!) it would be 'Angel', 'Teardrop' (which I'm listening to right now and it's giving me goosebumps...) and 'Black Milk' (the last 2 with amazing vocals from Elizabeth Fraser). So yeah, you could say I'm a bit of a fan! ;)

BTW, I've discovered that 'Black Milk' is great, er, making out music! ;)

Yeah, I do agree that Mezzanine is a weird mixture of accessible and weird, it's one of the most special albums there is I think. It's got a special place in my heart. I also have the singles box that came out after Mezzanine, it has all the remixes and there are some very good ones on it. I love Teardrop, in fact, I think we should post the lyrics here, because they are quite appropriate, don't you think? I also love the video to that!  :)

Love, love is a verb
Love is a doing word
Fearless on my breath
Gentle impulsion
Shakes me makes me lighter
Fearless on my breath

Teardrop on the fire
Fearless on my breath

Nine night of matter
Black flowers blossom
Fearless on my breath
Black flowers blossom
Fearless on my breath

Teardrop on the fire
Fearless on my breath

Water is my eye
Most faithful mirror
Fearless on my breath
Teardrop on the fire of a confession
Fearless on my breath
Most faithful mirror
Fearless on my breath

Teardrop on the fire
Fearless on my breath

Stumbling a little
Stumbling a little

Insensitive ~ Jann Arden

How do you cool your lips
After a summer’s kiss?
How do you rid the sweat
After the body bliss?
How do you turn your eyes
From the romantic glare?
How do you block the sound
Of a voice you’d know anywhere?

I have the song now, David (David925) asked some friends and found somebody who had the CD. It's very nice, it even has a BBM- guitar twang, did you hear that?  :)

I know I'm dating myself, here, but I'm in a Pat Benatar frame of mind tonight.  And I've always loved these songs, and even moreso now that they make me think of our boys:

Shadows of the Night

We're running with the shadows of the night
So baby take my hand, it'll be all right
Surrender all your dreams to me tonight
They'll come true in the end.

You said oh girl boy, it's a cold world
When you keep it all to yourself.
I said you can't hide on the inside
All the pain you've ever felt.
Ransom my heart, but baby don't look back
'Cause we got nobody else.

Chorus:

We're running with the shadows of the night
So baby take my hand, it'll be all right
Surrender all your dreams to me tonight
They'll come true in the end.

You know that sometimes it feels like
It's all moving way too fast
Use every alibi and words you deny
That love ain't meant to last.
You can cry tough baby, it's all right
You can let me down easy, but not tonight.

We're running with the shadows of the night
So baby take my hand, you'll be all right
Surrender all your dreams to me tonight
They'll come true in the end

And now the hands of time are standin' still
Midnight angel, won't you say you will?

We Belong

Many times I've tried to tell you
Many times I've cried alone
Always I'm surprised how well you
Cut my feelings to the bone

Don't want to leave you really
I've invested too much time
To give you up that easy
To the doubts that complicate your mind

Chorus:

We belong to the light
We belong to the thunder
We belong to the sound of the words
We've both fallen under
Whatever we deny or embrace
For worse or for better
We belong, we belong
We belong together

Maybe it's a sign of weakness
When I don't know what to say
Maybe I just wouldnt know
What to do with my strength anyway
Have we become a habit?
Do we distort the facts?
Now there's no looking forward
Now there's no turning back
When you say

(chorus)

Close your eyes and try to sleep now
Close your eyes and try to dream
Clear your mind and do your best
To try and wash the palette clean
We can't begin to know it
How much we really care
I hear your voice inside me
I see your face everywhere
Still you say

(chorus)

______________________

I've always loved this the most:  I hear your voice inside me, I see your face everywhere.

God, that's just the shit.

No more beans!

OK, just one more:

Love is a Battlefield

We are young, heartache to heartache we stand
No promises, no demands
Love is a battlefield
We are strong, no one can tell us we're wrong
Searching our hearts for so long, both of us knowing
Love is a battlefield

You're beggin me to go, you're makin' me stay
Why do you hurt me so bad?
It would help me to know
Do I stand in your way, or am I the best thing you've had?
Believe me, believe me, I can't tell you why
But I'm trapped by your love, and I'm chained to your side

We are young, heartache to heartache we stand
No promises, no demands
Love is a battlefield

We are strong, no one can tell us were wrong
Searching our hearts for so long, both of us knowing
Love is a battlefield

When we're losing control
Will you turn me away or touch me deep inside?
And before this gets old, will it still feel the same?
There's no way this will die
But if we get much closer, I could lose control
And if your heart surrenders, you'll need me to hold

We are young, heartache to heartache we stand
No promises, no demands
Love is a battlefield

We are strong, no one can tell us we're wrong
Searching our hearts for so long, both of us knowing
Love is a battlefield

We are young, heartache to heartache we stand
No promises, no demands
Love is a battlefield

We are strong, no one can tell us we're wrong
Searching our hearts for so long, both of us knowing
Love is a battlefield

No more beans!

The opposite effect: Brokeback Mountain made me think of this song.

ELO, “Midnight Blue” (from the Discovery album)

Booteeful words, booteeful. Will have to see if I can find it on ITunes or sumsuch, 'cos I've not heard of it before.
Will you stop playing with that radio of yours, I'm trying to get to sleep!

Funny you mention that, Barbara - Brokeback made me think of this ELO song:

Strange Magic

You're sailing softly through the sun
In a broken stone age dawn
You fly so high

I get a strange magic,
Oh, what a strange magic,
Oh, it's a strange magic.
Got a strange magic,
Got a strange magic.

You're walking meadows in my mind
Making waves across my time
Oh no, oh no.

I get a strange magic,
Oh, what a strange magic,
Oh, it's a strange magic.
Got a strange magic,
Got a strange magic.

Oh I'm never gonna be the same again
Now I've seen the way it's got to end -
Sweet dream, sweet dream.

Strange magic,
Oh, what a strange magic,
Oh, its a strange magic.
Got a strange magic,
Got a strange magic.
No more beans!

Today I stumbled across a rarity from the Seventies. When I drove to work in the early morning hours the radio station I was listening to played the German version of "Under One Roof" from The Rubettes. I think this was the first time I ever heard a gay themed song in German radio. Cool!

Under One Roof

Billy ran away from his home to find away to live in peace
His Mama didn't give a damn about him
His Papa's on the run from the Police
When Billy hit the city - the city hit Billy
No one needs you when your down and out
Then one kind guy with the painted eyes
Picked him up and bailed him out

Under one roof sharing one room
Nobody cared about them
Under one roof Sharing one room
Daring the world to part them

Billy found it hard to find a job to make some pay
AII day looking round getting me down I was being turned away
And Johnny was the only one who didn't talk down
To Billy from up above
And for the first time in his life Billy found out
What it felt like to be loved.

Under one roof sharing one love
Nobody cared about them
Under one roof sharing one love
Daring the world to part them.

Somehow Billy's Papa found out all about the style of Billy's life
And it didn't take long before he came round and he had a knife
He cut up Johnny stole all his money
He called him all the names that he could find
Said he'd wait for Billy at the factory tomorrow
And show him what they do to Billy's kind.

Under one roof sharing on love
Now the whole world knew about them
Under one roof sharing one love
Daring the world to part them.

Johnny said 'Billy we can run away from the world no more
I'm gonna fetch my daddy, I'm gonna show the world who I'm living for
And if I lose my job, if I lose my life you'll know one thing is true
He can take away anything from me
But he won't take me from you.

And at five thirty dead his daddy waited at the factory for him to come
And how it did degrade him he cut him and he slayed him
And spat on him in front of ev'ryone
As Billy lay dying his Papa started crying
Because the parent through him he became
And all because the person who has the first to give him love
Had been a man.
