« on: April 01, 2007, 12:25:22 am »
ok I have figured out HOW to download music...and now I am pulling a blank on what songs I want to buy!  ::) ::)

I liked the pop music of the 80s does anyone remember any names of artists? I remember Madonna was around....Men Without Hats....Wham?? were they in the 80s?? anyway, what songs were your favorites?  I like rock (not so much the heavy metal), country, a very little hip hop...(there was a song about waterfalls??)

The golden age of Michael Jackson was in the 80s, too.

It was the Bangles, forgot about them.

I can hear Turning Japanese, it was my friends favorite song, but I can't remember right now.
I won't cheat and look it up.

And Mexican Radio, another song my friend liked, can'r remember now either.

I cheated. “Turning Japanese” was done by The Vapors. I remember most of the lyrics--their purported meaning was vigorously debated for a while.

I loved Robert Palmer. Damned fine dresser.

Let us in on the debate...I remember the rumor it was about masturbation, myself. Steely Dan also has the "shine in your Japan" line in Bodhisattva which iI heard might be a similar reference.

And Robert Palmer, yes.

Yeah Blondie was a group, started in the 70's but big in the 80's too.

Yes, Billy Idol was a real big deal then, but he wasn't my style, I liked the sensitive ones.

I lived for music in the 80's.  That was all I cared about (well, mostly)
But there was some really great stuff back then.

there was! I used to listen to country almost exclusively but in the 80s I listened to as much pop as country...

I like just about anything if the music is ?smooth? you know how some music is jarring??

can't explain right!  :P

80s music was interesting for a lot of reasons . . . so many contradictions!

Most Hit Music of that time was so synthetic; hollow drum and bass tracks sounded good to us then. And on the surface, there was a party-it-up theme. But underneath, kind of a precipitous sense of doom or armageddon ("we got to live it up, live it up, Ronnie's got a new gun" and the club smash "American Soviets").

Even though it was a sexually conservative time with AIDS hysteria and Family Values shoved down our throats, androgyny was totally accepted, even encouraged in pop culture. Apparently, they initially tried to market John Mellencamp in a pouty, effeminate way because it was such a successful look for male artists.

And 80s culture seemed to reject the escapism of the 60s and 70s, but there was bending of reality in the 80s like never before. Remember Max Headroom and the hit Paranomia? An 80s "artist" that existed on no physical plane whatsoever.

yes, remember Der Commisar? (or however it was spelled....a lot seemed focused on Communism)

"I wear my Sunglasses at night"

that was another that the video had that whole oppression feel to it or am I remembering wrong??

I love both those tunes!

The ripping guitar solo over a synth arrangement made Sunglasses really stand out to me.  And I loved the hook of Der Kommisar!

Let's just keep things straight, here. "Der Kommissar" was by Falco, a performer from Austria.

And "I Wear My Sunglasses at Night" was by Corey Hart, from Canada.

OK, I'm comin' in late here, but I gotta respectfully disagree with one categorization. I think my Eagles belong in Country Rock rather than Easy Rock.

Those categories are nothing more than my own opinion. They (the Eagles) were in a class of their own, and for this listened, were vastly more listenable than the other 'country rock' artists of it's day. Like Anne Murray, who for some is strictly country, the Eagles were larger than that category. Again, this is strictly MY categorization when trying to divide the 70's music and it's artists. They could have been placed in the Super Star category too, like John Denver.

I didn't want to sound like a real old timer (I don't think I am that old) but I do think and wanted to say earlier the music was so much better then, I think the stuff today is horrible.

But maybe that's because everything today is all about the money, not the music at all.

Bingo!

How about

Here in my car
I feel safest of all
I can lock all my doors
It's the only way to live
In cars

Here in my car
I can only receive
I can listen to you
It keeps me stable for days
In cars

Here in my car
Where the image breaks down
Will you visit me please?
If I open my door
In cars

Here in my car
I know I've started to think
About leaving tonight
Although nothing seems right

Thanks L,

A couple of years ago, VH1 had a countdown show, 100 greatest one hit wonders, a lot of great forgotten songs.

My favorite, the song I loved in JHS, (I don't think it was there though)

Shannon, by Henry Gross.  I loved that song, but it was wierd, about a dead dog actually.

What about George Thorogood and the Destroyers?

Bad to the Bone...

On the day I was born
The nurses all gathered 'round
And they gazed in wide wonder
At the joy they had found
The head nurse spoke up
And she said "leave this one alone"
She could tell right away
That I was bad to the bone

Bad to the bone
Bad to the bone
B-B-B-B-Bad to the bone
B-B-B-B-Bad
B-B-B-B-Bad
Bad to the bone

I broke a thousand hearts
Before I met you
I'll break a thousand more, baby
Before I am through
I wanna be yours pretty baby
Yours and yours alone
I'm here to tell ya honey
That I'm bad to the bone
Bad to the bone
B-B-B-Bad
B-B-B-Bad
B-B-B-Bad
Bad to the bone

My husband and i have a challenge for y'all.  Its a 1980's MTV Trivia question

'Video Killed the Radio Star' by the Buggles was the first music video played on MTV

OK now here's the trivia question:

What was the second music video played on MTV, and who performed it?

HINT ( She rocked)  good luck!

GOOD try... I loved Joan Jett and the Blackhearts and I had a mad crush on her, but the chick we are looking for had more hits and more duration.  Kinda classic rock of the 1980's

I know who it was, I think,

Pat Benatar- the song Hit Me with Your Best Shot I think, but I am not sure of that.

I liked Joan Jett much better than Pat.

Yeah, I knew it was Pat Benater, but I wasn't sure about the song.

What was the song?  Oh yeah, it was the one with the video with all those girls fighting or something.

But Joan Jett was so cool, actually she still is.

Okay, I have a Joan Jett story.  She walked right by me last summer, I think she may even have saw me.  She was shooting a video and I sort of walked into where it was happening, and then she walked by.

She looked great, and really cool 8)

Thanks, I don't think I would have remembered that.

This has been such great fun today here.  I lived for the music in the eighties.  I forgot so much but I guess I remembered a lot too.  TLC, that was another good one.

Actually my name today, sort of, came from a song I that I loved back then. I may keep it and explain.

This was fun, Thanks Jess,
and great question Dev.

Trivia Question:  Which 80's artist or group had the most Top 40 hits in the U.S.?  (might not be who you think!)

And the answer is . . .  Hall & Oates!!!  We tend to associate the 80s with big solo acts: Madonna, Michael Jackson, Phil Collins (yecch), or David Bowie – but Hall & Oates (who were in a relationship with each other for a while) actually had the most Top 40 hits of the 80s.

"They are best known for their six #1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100: "Rich Girl", "Kiss on My List", "Private Eyes", "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)", "Maneater", and "Out of Touch", as well as many other songs which charted in the Top 40."

Thanks Laura - Don't think a them as a couple or as the top 40 with the most in the 80's - mostly cause I didn't like their music, beyond their first semi-hit "She's Gone". They did reflect their times though, in that all a their songs had a unique sound, so unique that (to me) they all tended to sound the same, yet quite diff'rent from all the other 'unique' sounds of the 'journeys' and 'genesis' of the 80's. Guess that's why I found the one hit wonders of the 80's more interesting, in retrospect.

Yes, that can certainly be true!

Which brings up another point.  Jess, you might also want to look at hit movies of the 80s & 90s and their soundtracks.  For the 80s, stuff like Less Than Zero, Pretty in Pink, etc.  They tend to include significant hits that may have been some of the only hits for their respective artists.

I was thinking that exact same thing in the car this morning. Anyone remember Something Wild with Melanie Griffiths, Jeff Daniels, and Ray Liotta? That had a fabulous soundtrack with songs by The Fine Young Cannibals, David Byrne, UB40, Oingo Boingo and more.

I seem to remember there were rumors because in the picture on one album cover they were really tarted up--eye shadow, blush, the works. Very ... feminine.

It's my background in writing history always makes me immediately skeptical of claims that thus-and-such a public personality is gay--or had a relationship with someone of the same sex. Professional instinct makes me want to see the evidence.

I am going to date myself here...first concert I ever attended was Vanilla Fudge at Weirs Beach, NH in 1969.

They sang their very famous version of the slowed down (way slowed down) Supremes hit, "You Just Keep Me Hangin On."

I like the 80s music for several reasons.

1,    My generation obviously.

2,    You could actually understand the words in the songs.  LOL

3,   catchy upbeat tempo /  rhythm.

The 80's was my music too.

All those reasons too, but you couldn't understand the words in all the songs.  I also believe that time was great because I think that there was a lot of creativity and originality going on at that time.  I think the good music of that time was created from real thoughts and feelings, not just how much money could be made like it seems today.
Also I think a lot of it did have some real substance too.

Oh yeah, also great hairstyles too.

My first real concert: The Police, Joan Jett and REM in Shea Stadium in 1983.

talking about soundtracks reminded me....John Travolta played an angel in a movie (can't remember the name) and they played this song that went (Please forgive) >.."I got a friend in Jesus..." or something...it was very catchy!! I just remember John and two women dancing to it...

anyone know that song

(I mean come ON...look at all the information I have on it... :P )

The Police were my first concert too! Can you believe I was 23. Oakland Colosseum, Oakland California.

I still love 80's music. I had a CD made on the Walmart music site. A bunch of 80s singles. I love to play that CD.

My two favorite take me back to the 80's singles: "I Ran (so far away)" by A Flock Of Seagulles and "London Calling" by The Clash.

My friend and I also used to love to blast that Loverboy "Get Lucky" CD. Mike Reno was a doll. I saw him recently on VH1. He's gained weight, lost hair but he's still cute. Nice to know we all do age now.  :)

I think the movie you are thinking of is Two Of A Kind (1983) with John Travolta and Olivia Newton John. Not sure about the song though. I think Hollywood was trying to recapture the success of their pairing in Grease.

Hi Wishes,

Yes the Police show was great, they were amazing and Joan Jett was awesome.  I actually went mainly to see REM, the first of many many times I saw them.

I definitely remember "I Ran". That was one of my summer of 83 songs!
They did have great hair cuts ;D

We were in Jamaica in April 1989 and headed off to a "deserted" beach....where we stumbled into The Fixx filming a music video. The song was something like "This Precious Stone." I never saw the video nor heard the song so obviously it was a flop. But watching them fillm for the better part of an afternoon was fun.

Trivia Question:  Which 80's artist or group had the most Top 40 hits in the U.S.?  (might not be who you think!)

And the answer is . . .  Hall & Oates!!!  We tend to associate the 80s with big solo acts: Madonna, Michael Jackson, Phil Collins (yecch), or David Bowie ? but Hall & Oates (who were in a relationship with each other for a while) actually had the most Top 40 hits of the 80s.

"They are best known for their six #1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100: "Rich Girl", "Kiss on My List", "Private Eyes", "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)", "Maneater", and "Out of Touch", as well as many other songs which charted in the Top 40."

? Wikipedia

Really?  I loved them in their early days together.  Saw 'em at the Paladium in New York when I was in high school.

Spirit in the Sky, Norman Greenbaum, 1969. Another one hit wonder.

I have to say, this thread has gotten me remembering the good old days of MTV.

When I grew up, we had limited opportunity to see our favorite bands and singers in action. Ed Sullivan on Sunday nights (famous for the Beatles in 1964), shows like Shindig or Hullabaloo...that was about it. If you happened to be a fan of lesser known groups who didn't show up on TV, you might never know what they looked like.

That was one of the things that was amazing, to me, about MTV. Suddenly, all these bands came to life. And the early videos were like little mini-movies with all sorts of stuff packed into 3 to 5 minutes.

They seem to be scattered all over the Internet, but if you do a google search with the name of the band followed by "music video" you should be successful. I have been dredging my memory banks with Adam Ant (watch Desperate but Not Serious, now there's a good looking man!); Duran Duran, check out Rio (silly); Hungry Life a Wolf (silly-sexy) and Girls on Film (the unrated version is worth a look but be warned, sort of R). Men at Work with Land Down Under (the famous vegamite sandwich line).

I won't post links because I am not sure how much folks are into this stuff, but if you can't find something and want some help, drop me a PM.

I also believe [the 80s] was great because I think that there was a lot of creativity and originality going on at that time.  I think the good music of that time was created from real thoughts and feelings, not just how much money could be made like it seems today.

Funny -- during the 80s, people were saying the same about the virtues of 60s/70s music verses the 'superficial, fake' 80s music!  Heehee.  (not that there wasn't some truth to it...)

My first real concert: The Police, Joan Jett and REM in Shea Stadium in 1983.

Damn. All on the same bill! Sounds fantastic!

Today, a concert package like that would cost how much money to see??  That's why I just don't go to concerts by large acts anymore; the ticket prices are outrageous!

Jess, you mentioned songs of the 90s too; there've been relatively few posts on that.

2 of my favorite 90s bands are Green Day and Weezer ("If you want to destroy my sweaterrrrrrrrr...")  Great sh*t!!

Bein over fifty myself, I've tried to refrain from commenting in that very way, but I certainly thought it. 80's music was an extention of the erosion of musicality that started with disco in the mid 70's - where the sound (or in the case of disco - the rhythm) took precedent, to the point where that was all that was left ... making room for the even more drab rhythm based 90's. Where's the musicality? Bands like ABBA were mere shadow of the creative musicality of the 60's & 70's, yet they were accused of bein 'hook' based. Reality (well at least my perception of it) is that they were the last group to incorporate music(ality) with their sound. Those great recordings of Michael Jackson in the mid 80's were just that ... great recordings - not anything anyone else might rerecord. & that the difference with the music of the 80's on - no one could or even would re-record em... they're not songs, they're sounds.

well at the risk of offending some people....rap seems more about the sound than the lyrics....and I have always wondered why the only words that are coherent in most rap songs are the curse words...I can't tell what the songs are even supposed to be about...let along what message they are trying to convey...

I do agree though that music has gotten to be more "generic"?? they all sound so much alike!!

ok...enough old people ranting!! LOL!!

you think todays kids will look back on THIS music and say the same thing?? That music was better when they were younger??

Yuck...imagine how bad music would have to get for that to happen!!

Very cool that you saw REM. I never have. The other bands that played that day, The Police headlining of coarse, were Thomson Twins (I saw them again in a smaller venue. They were fab) Oingo Boingo(sp?) (they kind of sucked) The Fixx (they were really good) and I think one other I can't remember.

Anyway, I have not been to many concerts but what I have been to I've enjoyed.
