Our dear friend John "Nasty" Gallagher :)
« on: April 21, 2006, 05:11:02 pm »
Added note at the beginning: there were originally two threads started to and about John, one started by me, one by Leslie (lnicoll).  On May 6th, 2006, Leslie and I merged our threads to make this one.  All the original posts are here, in chronological order.  Clarissa

Our dear friend John (jmmgallagher) in New York City, wrote to me today.  He asked me to say hello to you all, and to let you know that he had a stroke on Sunday, and is having difficulty with talking and writing.  He said using the keyboard to write to me was hard.  I am starting this thread so that people who would like to can write caring messages to John here.  I think he would appreciate simple and short messages right now.

I hope you're OK, sweetheart.  I'll be thinking of you and wishing you all the best.  Please keep us posted on your progress.

Miss you John.  But don't try to hurry back if it's too hard to type.  One of the quadraplegics in Murderball said that after his spinal injury, "The first thing I learned how to do was whack off.  I'd rather hold my meat than a toothbrush."

Keep you priorities straight.

Dear Sweet John,

My love and prayers are going straight to you, along with everyone else's here. An army of brokie love cannot be held back! This army'll get ya, friend, and you won't be sorry.

So, what're you supposed to do now, hunh? Guess you gotta go in there, and (metaphorically) untangle them Chilean sheep outta [your other herd]. At least I think that's a good metaphor for what happens in a stroke (neurons being sheep and belonging to their own herd/destination path!)

So everybody and their dog (sheep dogs, of course) can help John out by imagining all us brokies along with John, on horseback (and riding magnificently I might add) getting them sheep to go into their two separate herds all nice and orderly without Jack havin to go in there and drag 'em all one by one!! Then, when we're done, we'll ride back to camp together, serenading you with our awful harmonica playing to your heart's content.

Let the visualization begin!!

It makes me feel good that you can connect to us right here, right now, from your home, any time. We'll try to make it worth your read. One step at a time, one day at a time. We know you'll be back all in one piece before long. "Sure seem like you're in one piece to me..." (forgive me if that's a bit off, the book is not by my side).

Love,

Jenny

Dearest J,

We're right here.  We're your Tremblayans, and you can't get rid of us now.  We're thinking of you all the time, crossing everything and hoping you'll be feeling better soon.

Anyway, you've got to be feeling better soon.  After all, you're my Man On The Scene, my intrepid History Boys reporter.  Just think of the dangerously delicious Dominic Cooper, and things will seem a little brighter.  Dominic tells me that if you come to his dressing room after the performance, there's a little something he'd like to show you.  He's such a flirt, that one.

I love you and miss you.

Everyone,

I've gotten a few emails from John. He has started therapy and says the speech therapist is wonderful...sees her three days/week.

His speech is difficult but he says he finds it less frustrating than he thought. In his words, "a strange peacefulness."

Reading is difficult (can't read the paper) and TV is boring, but he is managing to read my fanfic. Man, am I honored!

He says "tell everyone I miss them all."

If you believe in non-local prayer or healing energy, please send some his way. He is in New York City.

I believe in healing energy. I'm atheist but the healing energy has worked for me so well, that I think is real. I'll send him some tonight.

I do, too!  And I am an atheist as well, but I've found that for whatever reasons, when a group of people has sent positive vibes/healing energy in the direction of my son or husband or another loved one when they were hurting, they were always healed.  So I'm sending some John's way tonight.

Thanks so much, Leslie.  It's so good to hear that John is recovering.  We missed him at the brunch today and talked about him often.  As soon as he is up to it, we'll plan another.

I know that healing thought energy can help people recover faster, so I will continue to send it to John.  I hope it won't be long before I can give him a hug in person and deliver his goodies from the brunch:  gummi candy, a toy sheep and a bandanna.   :D

Yes, thanks for the update on John. He is one of the first people whose posts I started watching for back on imdb (especially after the cowboy etiquette thread!). I'm not much of a pray-er or even a healing-energy sender but he is definitely in my thoughts. Which I guess is essentially the same thing.

Thank you so much for the update, Leslie! Please tell John he should have his speech therapist revise words like:

* Hunh?
* What?

Then the following sentencess:
* I wish I knew how to quit you.
* Never enough time, never enough.
* No more beans.
* You got whiskey or somethin'?
* Fast or slow I just like the direction you're headed.
* Friend, that's more words than you've spoke in the past two weeks.
* The hell they are!
* You need to shut your slop-bucket mouths, you hear me?
* I'll take a cup of coffe, but I can't eat no cake just now.
* S'alright. S'alright.
* I was just sendin' up a prayer of thanks

And mandatory:
* This is a goddamn bitch of an unsatisfactory situation!

I'm SURE it will make things much easier!  ;)

Dearest Brokie people--

Thank you for your sweet wishes!

Well, I dood it, as the saying goes. I thought I was just a bit under the weather, but Sunday night, April 16th, I had a stroke and I've been in the hospital since April 21st. Who knew, it seems I have a small congenital hole in my chest that now needs a small patch to close it in a month or so.

Read is very hard (nearly impossible), writing is slow, and my talking is a bit garbled. (Specifically, I have aphasia--Werneke's Aphasia--spelling is worse than ever!)

Won't keep more--thank you, thank you! Will try again--

You are all just so kind to sent messages!!

Thank you DEAREST sweetest people!

I've been a little bit emotional the last few days, getting jags. Because of the stroke it's very hard to read, although I'm trying--but even the easiest small sad pieces in the newspaper (like young kids dying Iraq) can sent me crying buckets.

Well, these are people who need positive vibes than I do. But you gave me a smile this evening!

Thank you!

Thank you Meryl!

Seems I need a dacron patch in my heart--

(Do you should ask the surgeon for denim instead?)

I wish I could try a few Haiku, but the speech therapist (who is really good) has me doing other other things first.

Can't wait to write soon!

Hey John,

It's great, great, great to hear from you. Let the tears come, and also make sure you get plenty to laugh about coming your way. I'll do my best to make you laugh here. Like, how at first I called the reality show about the 1867 cowboys "cowboy stock options." Then Victoria corrected me in the thread (it's really called "Texas Ranch House") but I didn't see it right, and so I went back and corrected it to be "Texas Ranch Hands."

For more lasting laughs, I recommend watching some good movies--comedies, people, let's think of some kick ass comedies for John! Ok, these will sort of date me, but here are some of my faves from back in the day:

Mr. Mom (best line: "21, 22, whatever it takes.")

Stir Crazy
(classic Gene Wilder/Richard Pryor flick)

The Sure Thing (a great John Cusak movie--before Say Anything even!)

The In-Laws
(the 1970's version, not last year's re-make!)

Okay, that's enough for me....I'm sure there must be more really funny things from the past 20 years but I can't think of much right now!

Love and Prayers,

Jenny (p.s. keep those mid-line crosses going! just march in place and you'll basically be doing it)

Also--I cannot WAIT till I can see my little silver stetsons and keychain lasso! I was hoping I could see you for coffee in midtown in a week or so, sometime, if you have the time--

Hey John, welcome back among the living!! It's so great to hear from you!  :D

Guess there's a long way for you to go with that therapy, but step by step you'll make it. I, too, hope and pray for your speedy recovery.
Yeah, we really would have loved to meet you at the Brokie Brunch on Saturday! But, just as Meryl said: this can be repeated. I, of course, won't make it to New York again any time soon, but I'm sure there'll be a bunch of US-Brokies to attend. Main thing is you get well again and don't loose your humour. You'll need it to carry you through all this!

Bye bye

ANKE

P.S. My audio-project from the NY-Brokiegathering will probably be online soon. I sent it as an mp3-file to Phillip yesterday. You are in it, too, of course. And the good thing is: one doesn't have to read it!

John,

I'm sorry to hear of your stroke but glad to hear that you're on the road to recovery. Remember to be patient with yourself. As for your heart problem, by lurking here, I've learned that you already have a "good" heart. I guess your doctors are planning to make it even better!

Take care,

Crying about what's going in Iraq just means you are paying attention, John.  It IS heartbreaking.

Now on the other hand, the healing I see in you is heart-warming.  Giant (but gentle) hug, Clarissa

I'd LOVE to meet you for coffee (but I can't eat no cake just now--or then neither) next week--any time time or place is the right time and place (except during work hours, LOL). I got 'cher key chain right here next to me, all ready to go. I could meet you this weekend if you want!

And yeah, it really makes me smile to know that you'll be listening to the Broncho audio experience and getting an earful of love sent your way!

Just shoot me a PM about where and when--have cowboy hat charms, will travel.

John -

It's just soooooo fantastic to see your smiling avatar and know that, even with the difficulties, you're here with us.  I think you've defined in a new way what it means to be a Brokie!  Have your therapist(s) tailor excersizes to be BBM-specific, and measuring your progess in Brokie events.

You have been so missed, so cared about, so loved by so many.  Glad you're moving in a good direction!

First off, I just want to say to John, if you're reading this, I'm so glad that you're doing better and are able to check in here from time to time. God bless your sweet heart, and speed you onto a full recovery.

Per Front-Ranger's recommendation of O Lucky Man!, I would certainly concur that that is a most interesting movie, with a wonderful (as always) performance from Malcolm McDowell. But I do want to warn the faint of heart that there is a brief scene in the film that scared the bejeesus out of me! Don't want to scare anyone away from this Lindsay Anderson classic, but to be forewarned is to be fore-armed.

Cheers,
Scott

John! So good to see you pos again! Glad to hear you're making progress! Thanks for the update, Leslie.

I've got some more funny movies for you, though sometimes funny is in the belly of the beholder (belly being the source of good, deep laughter, dontchaknow). Here are some of my faves:

Zoolander
The Princess Bride (a classic for all time)
LA Story
Harold and Maude (One of my most beloved films, period. Though it has sad parts too, and may be a bit heavy for you right now. But there are certainly parts that make me laugh out loud!)

Some folks have recommended the Canadian film Supertroopers (sp?), but I ain't yet had the opportunity  ;) to watch it.

Sending you lots of positive energy from sunny California! And a big (((((((((John)))))))))) hug.

OMG!
LOL!
What a wonderful way to start the day! Thanks Celeste!

And I of course concur, that Harold and Maude is one of the best films ever made. How could I not, with my chosen harmonica song being "If you want to sing out, sing out"?

And, yes, The Princess Bride, how could I have forgotten? Where's that damn Nicole girl when you need her (remember her verbatim quoting on Elle's BBM Quiz Game thread at ol' PT? Check the archive, if you don't remember, for a laugh or two. A couple of others were in on it with her, but I can't say who right now!)

And finally, Clarissa, big hug! I miss you. Haven't had many run-ins lately,  :( so please PM me or Meryl or John with your number, and we will ring you up next week at our coffee date.

Saturday love to everyone,

Jenny

Clarissa

Excellent work on the merge, and good idea!  I want to have coffee with ya'll...I want to sit with you and listen to Anke's audio report again, and enjoy everyone's company and hear Jenny's harmonica playing (I owe her some CDs anyway).

BBM continues to serve humanity - it has changed hearts and minds, revealed and healed wounds, and woven a tapestry of caring and friendship around the world.  I hope Annie & Ang and everyone connected with this movie have the contentment of knowing that they have changed lives.

Jenny - as far as I know, the moderator magic wand includes a "Merge" function, but I've never used it, and assume it's easy to screw up, so congrats to Elle & Leslie for not doing that!

Oh, yaadpyar (sometimes I simply must type that instead of Celeste!), to have coffee with you would indeed be a slice of heaven. We simply must find a way to get me to Chicago this summer. I'll be sure to bring my harmonica--the tiny one and the regular sized one.

All right - ya'll come on!  Of course we'll meet.  Tell ya what - we'll have a Brokie Brunch in Chicago!  But we're gonna have to get Anke here - no way I'm doing it without her doing an audio report - it just transform the mundane into the divine.  Whoever you work for, Anke, is so lucky to have you!

Julie - I never noticed that the words under your avatar are late, and I know better than to think you're an idiot...

Jenny, yaadpie is right - it's a moderator capability.  I used it once before to merge Sheyne's two pieces of her deliciously painful Malaysian subtitles thread.  It's easy to do, the system guided me through, step by step.  Yaadpie, try it!  You can create two threads and practice.

Wow!  I just got off the phone from talking with John.  I crashed the get-together with Meryl and Jenny and John, and I'm so glad I did.  Meryl said she took a pic of John on the cell phone with me, so she'll post that some time I'm sure.

Wonderful, dear John is doing remarkably well.  Speak and listening are challenging for him, but there's no challenge for his sheer warmth and lovliness to just shine through, and we were both in tears by the end of the call (which doesn't happen to me, I promise!).

I can't tell you how touching and special it was to speak with him, and know how much our love and good wishes have meant to him, and how real and important this community has become to each of us.  One of the things he said was how, when he was still in the hospital, and would awaken at 4 or 5 in the morning, he would just sit quietly for a couple of hours, not thinking anything at all, but feeling completely peaceful, and what an extraordinary experience that was.

I'm sure Jenny and Meryl will post something about their experience, but wanted to catch you up on the latest.  And when John's brain has repaired some I hope he'll be able to read this and post his own thoughts.  I can't wait until then...

Celeste, what beautiful words--you captured the heart of the moment so well. I was less eloquent in my post on the brunch thread but it is so true how much our love and our community means to John (and to me too!). Hearing him talk about some things we have gone through together as a community really said something that few have been able to articulate in such a heartfelt way. Thank you for that John. Words may not come easily for you now, and sometimes they just aren't enough, but that's not a bad thing necessarily, because it gives the love more spaces to shine through from within.

And Meryl, re: your sentiments above, me too. :)

I've been out of touch lately, but I'm so glad to read this thread.  John: yeehaw to you -- maybe it's of use to you to know you're strengthening us as you strengthen yourself.  And it's always great to hear of another get-together.  Yippeepie.

John, I've been thinking about what you said about going to the park for a picnic.

How about Sunday, June 11?  That is the first full moon in June, the time of the First Tent Scene.  It would be nice to do something on that important day.

If there is enough interest, I will be glad to start a new thread for a picnic.  :)

I hope you're feeling well!  I'm still feeling happy vibes from meeting up with you and Jenny last week.  :-*

Oh. My. God.  That is the day I'm flying to San Francisco for our BBM at the Castro adventure.  We'll have to celebrate.  Got to go tell em at the other thread.  You are so good at this, Meryl.

Sister Clarissa, on my authority as High Priestess, I charge you to gather them Brokies at some point on Sunday and say some good words about Our Boys.   And have a sip of whiskey er somethin' for those of us who will be there in spirit!  S'alright?  :-*

P.S. - Pentecost (the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles) is on June 4, making June 11 the First Sunday After Pentecost, and for Orthodox Christians Pentecost is actually celebrated on June 11.  So say an "Amen" with Jack's Mom while you're at it.  ;D

Hello Everybody!

Thanks again dearest Jenny and Meryl for the lovely Wednesday night in New York, thanks also Celeste for your phone call--it was wonderful! Please also to remember me for all our kind friends--

I wish I could go to San Francisco--I've been so many times, but funny how I've never been to the Castro Theater--now you will all be there June 12--

We New York Brokies will be at the full moon during the second week of June, and will think about you at the night of the Castro Theater--

(Sorry, the slow writing to hear is a tedious thing for you all--)

Love you all--
xxxxxxxxxx

Thank you Meryl and Jennie! What a beautiful evening!

Thank you Celeste, for a lovely phonecall, and I'm so happy to hear you and Meryl saw one another in Chicago!

And Jude, what a dear note--I'll be happy to hear your Brokies will have a Paris rodeo!

Thanks all, kind Kelda and Lordess Barb, David and Jeff, Henrypie and BLESSED 'Ellemeno,' EVERBODY, one day I WILL be able to write more than a few notes, and will say--well, what I'm not able to say it yet, but I will--

We New Yorkers (and our High Priestess!) will convene on the full moon, the evening of June 12, in Central Park, just as the eve of the Castro Theater screening in San Francisco, with Brokies far and wide--what a peripatetic and very POWERFUL group we are--

Amazing, just amazing really! (Considering I could have kicked the bucket nearly six weeks ago--even though I still haven't managed a haircut--)

(just waking up so this is me at a little off my game, but it's the thought that counts!)

Heeeeeeyyyyyyyyyy Johhny-boy!!! You just made my day, to see you posting here! I keep thinking of you and wondering how you are doing, wish I could call ya up (thought I had your number but when I tried it, it was Meryl's!). Speaking of the high priestess, what AWESOME photos! I think we should nominate you to be the official archivist or chronicaler of our cult. I guess that would mean wearing two hats--the high priestess headress and whatever hat photographers wear, but you'd pull it off (or keep it on) with grace and style, methinks.

I can't wait for June 12!!! Let's start planning now. I don't know what time we've said, but I have committments that would keep me from  being there till about 7 or 7:15. Can we hire somebody to teach us how to lasso each other and wrestle? Can we go on horseback rides through the park? Is it gonna be a picnic potluck with all our favorite brokie-food? I'll bring the beans and the spoons! (and a can opener of course.)

John, I will PM you for some other questions I've been wanting to ask you, but just know my heart is very glad to see you here today (well, last night really). I am also glad it's the weekend b/c I can finally hang out here again and catch up --I've missed you all dearly. Missed myself even. Happy day, happy Saturday! :-* :-*

Hi, John!  I'm always glad to see you online again, and now others can see you as well!   I told you guys he was a hottie--am I not right?  :-*

Hi Jenny and Anke and Ray and Isabelle, too.   Hmm, I didn't know John was into the smut threads either, but it only increases my respect for him!  ;) ;D

Brokies, the full moon is on June 11 (not 12th), which is a Sunday.  Is that date okay with y'all?  Hopefully the moon will rise at a civilized hour so we can see it before we leave our picnic.  If it gets too late, the coyotes might jump us.  :P

Hello everyone,

I've just heard from John and he said it was alright to let everyone know that he is in the hospital again, since Friday, and will be there all week. He apparently had a set back, which has resulted in him getting a new drug therapy that seems to be helping his speech, to his relief. It has also led to his being scheduled for surgery on Monday the 12th. I am letting people know so we can all continue to send our thoughts, energies, and prayers to John in whatever form we feel called to do.

It's very unfortunate that because of this development, he won't be able to join us at our NYC gathering in Central Park on the 11th (which we need to get cracking on by the way! in planning, that is). At the very least, we can give John a call on the day. He said he'd be watching for the full moon from the hospital window  :)

John, I'm sending my love, prayers and healing energy for a quick and full recovery from this thing. We need to get you back to talkin and drinkin and all with us!

Hugs,

Jenny

Three Important Events on Monday, June 12th:

A) Our John will have his "cocktail umbrella" (as he calls it) inserted to help patch him up.  I know we're all sending up our equivalents of a prayer for his continued re-healthing.

B) Our Victoria will be celebrating her milestone birthday.

C) The San Francisco Castro Team will be gathering to see Our Boys on the big screen.

Love to our whole big family,

Clarissa

I simply demand to see your name in the posts I get to read here! Talk to you soon  ;)

Thank you dearest people!

Really, the hospital is really nice, even the food is tolerable. Some of the tests were yucky, but everyone here has been wonderful. I don't even mind being tethered to the IV as Heperin, the wonder drug, is making it possible. Monday I'll have the 'Plug' (for the hole) and the 'Christmas Tree' (the clot filter I also call it the 'Clot Buster') installed--then I'll be able ready to dance!

Seriously, it's even better that I'm getting a bit 'compos mentis,' and I feel 'clearer' every day--I hope I'll be able to see you soon!

Seriously, it's even better that I'm getting a bit 'compos mentis,' and I feel 'clearer' every day--I hope I'll be able to see you soon!

xxxxxxx!

Dear John--

I just read this on a nurse bulletin board, thought it would make you smile:

"You remember that horrible song "Where have all the cowboys gone"? They have all become nurses, that's where."

LOL

I just got a PM from John, and he's still holed up in the hospital:

Slight hitch in the proceedings--I'm still in the hospital until my 'count' gets higher, drat it--I MIGHT get out tomorrow, Friday, but it might even be Saturday if not. Oh well!

Sadly, I'm in the cardiac ward, 5th floor, much less nice than 7th floor before, and I have to wear electrodes for cardiac sensors--I'll be very happy to get out, believe me!

So, Brokies, I told him we'd provide him some high-class entertainment.  Anyone got some hot cowboy pics?  Not TOO hot--he is wearing electrodes, after all, and we don't want to cause a meltdown!  ;D

Gosh, the nurses will see--but, come to think of it, they might get me a free pass out of town tonight!

If John checks out some of the pics over at "Anything Goes," they'll sure set off the alarm on his monitor!  :o

That's it, the nurses are not getting any passes with these photos. I have a date with Billy Jarrett!

Thanks, Victoria!

I don't want to be greedy, so I think I'll take--numbers 2 and 3. They both have a kind of outdoors-y Brokeback feel, don't ya think? The tent's not right, but...!

John, when I was in the same hospital having my tonsils out at 9 years old, I didn't have a laptop full of friends with me, or a bunch of cowboy cuties doing lap(top) dances.

I am so touched that everyone here is rooting for your best - some are praying, some are consciously NOT praying, all with the same goal of our beautiful John mending.

We loves ya, John.   Also, when I clicked on this thread just now, it was directly ABOVE the "Jake, Jake, Jake" thread.  That's some high-class company, if you ask me.

Okay, since U don't want em, I'll take 4 & 5. Four reminds me of Jake and 5, isn't he just the spitting image of Heath?

Later edit: I can't believe this is my 900th post!! How far I've come (or gone) since March 6 when I first posted to this board!! At least, I'm posting to U, John, same as I have since we talked about Resistols way back in March!!

I had a nice visit with John at the hospital today (my Grand-dad would have called it the "horse pistol").  He's doing well, but is stir crazy!  He's been there two weeks now, and is even beginning to like the hospital food.  :o  We have to go to his aid.  Send more hot cowboys or somethin'!  :P

An update for all you John Gallagher fans:

John got out of the "horse pistol" on Monday and is ecstatic to be a free man after over two weeks of captivity.  :P  I met him for coffee today, and he's doing well and still hoping he can join us at another Brokie brunch.  Speaking of which, I'm starting a thread today for another NYC get-together the weekend of July 29-30.  Stay tuned!  8)
