Ok....by popular demand, we are gonna try this again.

So here is the idea. This coming Sunday is Earth Day....how about we each take a nature picture. Something that is meaningful to YOU. A special place. A special view. and add a small paragraph saying why it is special to you. Invite us to share your retreat!

This picture can be taken any time of day and anywhere. (No getting outta bed in the middle of the night!  )

Look forward to seeing what you come up with for this one! I am clueless about what we will get!!

I have an idea of what I would like to photograph I think...

who is up for round 2??

Count me in! That's much easier (I think..) than the first project! I mean, it won't entail waking at 6am on a Sunday and scaring my cats!

There was a beautiful beautiful sunset yesterday over Brussels here, but didn't have my camera with me!!  :-\

Here are my earth day pictures. Taken yesterday afternoon at the stables. Meet Jetra and her one month old foal Hilfiger  :)
So far, 6 foals have been born at the stables. Hilfiger is one of the cutest. I love how he seems to wonder what his mum is up to lying down an enjoying the sun. And then he gives her a little nuzzle. Sweet!

these pictures didn't come out as well as I hoped...but I live in the Piney Woods of East Texas...as you drive from Houston you can SEE the rise of the land...that you are driving UP. The second  views are from the area north of Longview looking south...the first is of a hill that has sheered off it actually is pretty big, although it doesn't come across in the pic!  :P

beautiful...wish they had come out better

This is our cherry tree. We have only a very little garden and only one tree in it. Obviously it was planted long before our time and it came with the house. At first, I wasn't very euphoric about it, because it shades nearly the whole garden in summer. But it would have been a shame to cut it off.
Meanwhile I have grown fond of it because I love our own, home-made cherry-jam. And I love the ritual of making it. The whole family strips all clothes off, because it's a huge mess and cherry stains are not removeable from clothes. The oldest child and my husband pick the cherries, while the younger children and I start removing the stones from the cherries. Whoa! After a while we all look like we had been in a bloody massacre.
Then my oldest puts the cherries through the wringer meat mincing machine and my husband cooks the jam.
Even after showering and washing hands multiple times, we all have lilac hands for days  ;D.
But it's all worth it, this is the best cherry-jam you can get in the world  :).

I took photos on my mobile phone (as I had been at my friends for the weekend and took some photos on my way home) - but the instillation software for the computer is playing up... bear with me it may be a day or two but I did take them today!

Just before sunset today, I took my bike and drove around my town.
I've been to streets I'd never been before! I took a few pictures. Here a selection -

No petrol today..

My bike and cat..

Going for a walk..

I know it's not a 'sunset' project, but I took some anyway tonight -

Earth Day Pictures

I was driving around today and I saw this tree. I decided it had to be my picture here.  I have no idea who's house it is, but I love that there are trees as beautiful as this in the big city.

Here is a picture of the beach today.

This little fella decided that earth day was the right day ta start showin off. Wish it were later during the early summer - then you'd get a better idea a my summer outdoor sanctum (surrounded on all sides by lovely flowers, some a them very fragrant, others attractive to some unusual lookin birds)

I spent most of the day with my dad and stepmother.  We drove up to Sewanee, a little mountain college town in middle Tennessee, and went for a walk in the woods.  I carried along a trash bag to pick up some of the ususal college detritus, mostly empty beer cans and broken beer bottles.  There were conspicuously three empty bottles of champagne too, so I was left wondering what was being celebrated ... passing comps, maybe.

My ulterior motive was to practice with my new digital camera...I still don't think I'm there, yet.

The walk was through Abbo's Alley, named after a long-deceased English professor.  There are usually a plethora of wildflowers, but the severe frost a week or so ago meant that we saw no flowers.  Still, it was a warm sunny day and nice to be outside in nature.

Sewanee means a great deal to me because that was where I was as my 19-year old idealistic self.  In a sense, it's my Brokeback Mountain because I compare the me now with the me then - how I am happy with the way some things have turned out and less pleased about others.  Whenever I visit, I feel a bit closer to a better version of myself.

Here are a couple of pictures of Abbo's Alley:

Afterwards we drove around a bit to some of the scenic overlooks and I took some pictures of the view of the valley from the mountain.  Interesting aside:  Students at the university from the local area were referred to as 'Covites' - sometimes derogatory and sometimes in fun.  So I guess these would be the coves below the mountains from where I hail:

Then I dragged Dad and Linda over to the Sewanee Natural Bridge, which is also really pretty- good payoff for only a short hike:

Happy Earth Day!

too late to input? here is a special place to me....amongst the last large stand of American Elms in the U.S. The place creates a feeling of remorse, lost grandeur, melancholy, and foreboding, yet beauty beyond belief.

wow, I did not know the titles of photos remained once posted; sure glad the name was nothing secret!

you are blessed if you have American elms. I know your neighborhood and have seen some of the trees, but they are few, indeed. The photo is in Grant Park chicago. I've been working on restoring elms for over 20 years and now we have some great cultivars and hybrids that may be perfect. But, the true answer is in bioengineering the problem gene.

Hi, you read Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver?  It's a big part of the storyline.

Update: Oops!  In Prodigal Summer, it's the American Chestnut that's the issue.  Still a wonderful, wonderful novel.  One of my very favorite ever.
