What's Your Favorite Candy Bar?
« on: April 22, 2007, 01:49:53 am »
Here in the Midwest, we take our candy VERY seriously! In fact, if we hadn't settled it in time, you might now be reading about the "Great Hoosier Candy War of 1990". Fortunately we avoided it.... but just barely!

Surely I jest...... or do I?

Yeah I'm kidding, but Midwesterners LOVE their chocolate!

For example...

In Northern Indiana people seem to prefer Butterfingers and Baby Ruths (for some odd reason, maybe it's due to all the lake effect snow up there), in Central Indiana Hershey's and Three Musketeers are the norm. But down in Southern Indiana though, the closer you get to the Ohio river, the more likely you are to find Hoosiers chomping on Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and Twix.

Odd but true.   ???

Which candy bar is your favorite?

I adore Reeses Peanut Butter Cups, I remember when they came out (Oh God that does date me doesn't it  :-\ ) I've even been to the factor in California where they make them.  It's fascinating and not  at all what you expect....But my all time favorite candy bar still to this day is Tootsie Rolls.  I just LOVE Tootsie Rolls.  :D

I voted Mars. It's the best chocolate bar ever!  :)

Besides, other than Milky Way and Twix, i don't know any of the ones David summed up!

Tootsie Roll, Reese Peanut Butter Cups?? Sounds wonderful, but i'm clueless  ???  :)

It's okay. You live in Belgium, and Belgium makes the best candy in the world.

Well, Belgium and The Netherlands.

But then Switzerland and Germany make excellent chocolate too.

<David thinks he better keep his mouth shut, or else he might touch off a "European chocolate war" like the one we ALMOST had here in Indiana>  :-X

Me neither. They're a typical loose candy, which kids buy with their pocket money in school kiosks, a couple a time.
When I was in school, we used to nibble off the candy pearls one by one, until the gummi was "naked" and only then put it in the mouth. That way four or five of them lasted a long time .

it's strange to see a white candy bar, but I'd try it.

I've tried something new the other day: salted caramel in chocolate.
You know how over the last years those apparently non-fitting combinations of chocolate and hearty/hot components became ever more popular? Well, I've never been a fan of those. To me it looked like a lifestyle gag: look at me, I'm so cool, I eat chocolate with red pepper. ::)
Now someone gave me a chocolate bar with salted caramel and what can I say? I love it! caramel with a clear side-taste of salt is great. Who would have thought.

Who knows, maybe one day I'll even understand the appeal of salted popcorn.
(We do have it here too, it's only rarer than the sugared variety, but we don't have buttered popcorn, which I really don't miss ;D)

Really? What kind of popcorn do they sell at the cinema? Do they sell popcorn at all at the cinema?

Chrissi: my new obsession is Blue Marble Ice Cream from Brooklyn:

Stop by 186 Underhill Ave for a sweet treat! Our suggestion?
A Sea Salt Caramel sundae made with delicious organic ice cream
and Nunu's hot fudge topped with whipped cream.

And yes, Blue Marble makes a (subtly hot)  Mexican Chocolate-Chocolate Chip that is to die.

Now I'm hungry!  Snickers is the bar I reach for most often when I have a sugar craving.  But I love Almond Joy, too!

Speaking of ice cream with spicy stuff, I've discovered that chocolate or vanilla ice cream paired up with wasabi soy almonds is simply divine.  8)

Of course popcorn belongs to the cinema experience! And of course it's sugared! I've never seen freshly made salted popcorn anywhere except at the German-American fairs (gosh, now that's some long ago memories, when I still lived in/around Heidelberg).
Freshly made popcorn at fairs or the theatre is always sweet. Salted popcorn comes in packages at big supermarkets. Buttered popcorn you don't get anywhere.

Lots of sweet things contain a little salt, used as a spice; just like many hearty recepies contain a pinch of sugar.
But the salted caramel I'm speaking of really tastes (a little) salty.
Which reminds me of my grand-aunt. For her, salad was a sweet dish. She always put enough sugar in it that the whole salad tasted sweet. Hers was the only salad I liked when I was a kid. ;D

I'm TOTALLY dating myself here, but--I LOVED Cracker Jack!--but I haven't tasted it in decades, but--

As Jeff would say--

Ou sont les neiges d'antan?  :(

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cracker_Jack

Cracker Jack is an American brand of snack consisting of molasses-flavored candy-coated popcorn and peanuts, well known for being packaged with a prize of nominal value inside. The Cracker Jack name was registered in 1896. The slogan "The More You Eat The More You Want" was also registered that year. Some food historians consider it the first junk food. Cracker Jack is famous for its connection to baseball lore. The Cracker Jack brand has been owned and marketed by Frito-Lay since 1997.

Early beginnings
Frederick William Rueckheim—a German immigrant known informally as "Fritz"—sold popcorn at 113 Fourth Avenue, now known as Federal Street, in Chicago beginning in 1871. The popcorn was made by hand using steam equipment. In 1873, Fritz bought out his partner, Brinkmeyer, and brought his brother Louis Rueckheim over from Germany to join in his venture, forming the company F.W. Rueckheim & Bro. According to legend—an urban myth propagated to promote the brand by Borden Foods—states that Rueckheim produced a popcorn confection and presented it to the public at the World's Columbian Exposition (Chicago's first worlds fair) in 1893. There is no evidence that Rueckheim had an exhibit at the Columbian Exposition. In 1896 Louis discovered a method to separate the kernels of molasses coated popcorn during the manufacturing process. As each batch was mixed in a cement-mixer-like drum, a small quantity of oil was added—a closely guarded trade secret. Before this change, the mixture had been difficult to handle, as it stuck together in chunks.

(and etc.)

I was never a fan of cracker jack.   Tried it once, that was enough.

I find it too sweet. Never cared much for caramel corn, either, though lately I've found it to be OK.

I agree with you.  In the past when I've been given a three-way tub of popcorn (salted, cheese and caramel flavors) the caramel is always the last to go.  Cheese usually first.

Same here. Actually, it was a gift of one of those "three-ways" (  ) that actually started me liking caramel corn. There are probably different ways of making caramel corn, different recipes. The cc in the three-way tub that I received as a gift was fairly "light" in its sweetness, not too heavy or cloying.

Of course, popcorn with white cheddar is the best.  :)

I've never tried salted caramel, but dark chocolate with a pinch of salt is very good.

But dark chocolate with chili is even better.

Ghirardelli now makes salted dark chocolate with almonds.

Yeah, we have that here too.

Not Ghirardelli of course, which I'm not crazy about anyway.

I'm here, I'm here! O0

Ohh yes, indeed there is a story to sour skittles. Many people already know it, so feel free to skip.

On the road trip in '08 I sat in a car with Chuckie. I was curious about what he nibbled on and he handed me some sour skittles. Without thinking I put a small handful of them in my mouth at once.

 :o
 :o :o
 :o :o :o
 :o :o :o :o
 :o :o :o :o :o

There are not enough smileys in this world to express my horror. I thought I'd die on the spot!

I spat them into my hand and I guess I asked for a tissue or something. Chuckie - already laughing, the little devil - told me to just throw them out of the window and my reply was "No. Some wild animal will find and eat them. It will die right next to the road and everybody will think it's roadkill."

Sour skittles are the worst, most sour thing that exists in the whole world! You have no idea how sour they are, a lemon is nothing compared to skittles.

Gosh, Chuckie and I had such a big laugh about this. We still do today. ;D
