Fun and Frustration with Babelfish!!
injest:
ok...has anyone used a translator program?? well, if you haven't, you are missing out on some kind of fun...or frustration...depending on what you are trying to do....
EXAMPLE!!
I am going to translate a phrase from English to German....and then back to English....and see how it comes out!!
first:
"get your scrawny asses in here"
the German 'equivelent':
erhalten Sie Ihre hageren Esel innen hier
and translated BACK into English....
"receive your hageren donkeys inside here"

(loses something in the translation!!!)
this is funny if we are just playing...but imagine if you were trying to have a serious discussion with someone and had to rely on a translation program.
injest:
French!!
LOL
English:
get your scrawny asses in here
to French:
obtenez vos ânes émacié dedans ici
and back to English:
obtain your asses here émacié inside
(god, it is a wonder we can understand each other at all....I don't know French or German...if there are any people here that DO speak those languages..do they make any sense to you? I mean before I translated them back to English)
ifyoucantfixit:
Now Jess you have shown the difficulty that some of us, such as Artiste has in trying to get his
messages across.. Its a freaking wonder he can even understand us at all... Thanks for that illustration..

I am imagining French fan site dedicated to Brokeback Mountain with only Babelfish to translate for them.... They sit down with their popcorn and Ennis jumps out of the truck....walks up to the office there...then here comes Jack....
then Aquirre pulls up and goes inside for a minute...comes back opens the door and hollers "receive an ass in here"
they would be so confused..."Did YOU see a donkey in that movie?? well why did he say he was giving them an ass??"
Imagine THEIR open forum!!! there would be endless talk of the symbolism of the donkey...

Hi Jess,
the German translation of the English phrase makes absolute no sense.
The word asses were translated as donkey already in the German translation.
But not only that word is wrong, the whole sentence is wrong.
Like you said it, when you have a serious discussion with someone, then it is not so funny,
because to find the right words and make a right sentence is not so easy
- and you see the translation of a whole sentence failed!
The following translation program translate also phrases,
but it didn`t find yours in exactly the same words, but similar!
I use that program often.
