Hey Clarissa! I found a 5200 BTU for $109.99 at BestBuy...

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8635765&type=product&id=1194052962322

I haven't checked Fry or Circuit City. I could have sworn I saw 7500 BTU's for under $100.00 last year. Anyway, a 5200 BTU would probably be enough to cool your bedroom.

I hope the heatwave breaks tomorrow, like you said. But it might be a good idea to go ahead and purchase a small unit, just in case. At least you'd have it there, ready to use in case it gets hot again. Summer hasn't even started yet!  :P

I have a window air conditioner that I got as a hand-me-down from a friend.  It's a 5950 BTU and it's definitely strong enough to cool my bedroom and to even make some of the surrounding rooms a little better if I leave the bedroom door open.  I recommend it as a good option.  But, installing it can be difficult.  In my apartment building now (and in previous apartment buildings) the maintenance people are required to put it in (tenants aren't allowed to do it themselves).

Chrissi,

Don't expect any air conditioning here in Maine! And I am happy to serve you lukewarm beverages if that is the way you like them....  ;)

He sure is. We all luv ya David-sweetie :-*

I had to smile about the air-condition conversation ;D. Over here, Americans are (in)famous for their addiction to air-condition (and their liking of beverages two degrees above the freezing point, lol).

The only time air-condition in houses were a topic over here was in summer 2003. We had temperatures around 40°C (104°F) for months that summer (and my Oliver is born end of August 2003; I was advanced in pregnancy during the hottest summer in decades :P).

Oh, I think I remember hearing about that heatwave Chrissi. And you all had another one a couple of years ago too. At least Holland did. I remember Melissa emailing me about it when it was happening. She and her boyfriend were so hot they lost their appetites. Hopefully that won't happen again over there anytime soon!

But, here in the US, it gets quite hot in many places of the country, and insufferable in other parts. Here in Indiana, we average daily highs in the mid 80's to lower 90's. That's NORMAL for us, and it sometimes even reaches the upper 90's to low 100's here, and nobody thinks a second thought when it happens. But we DO switch on our air conditioners. Here, in Indianapolis, people die each summer from the heat, and the city hands out free box fans each year to those who cannot afford a/c.

And it gets even hotter than that just south of me. Summers here can be terrible. On the other hand, I used to travel up to central Michigan quite often to see friends up there, near Grand Rapids, Big Rapids and Mecosta. Many of them do NOT have air condition because it rarely gets above 80 F during the summer. And night time in central Michigan during the summer can be quite cool, even requiring the need to wear a light jacket. IN JULY!! That's UNHEARD of where I live. Here, the humid heat sticks around day AND night!

Anyway, I guess what I'm trying to say is it depends on where you live here in the US. Some Americans need their air conditioners, and others don't. :D

I also have ceiling fans in most of the rooms in my house, and they help to keep the house cool too. They circulate the cool air around the room and work in concert with the air condition.

Amanda, I was also thinking maybe Clarissa could invest in one of those free standing air condition units that sit on the floor. They have wheels on them, and you can move them from room to room. But they are much more expensive, and since she lives in Seattle, I'm sure it wouldn't be worth the investment.
