Olympic Gold Medalist© thisisoz.com.au, ACON This Is Oz is a website about celebrating diversity and challenging homophobia and making Australia a place where everyone belongs.
This Is Oz is an online photo gallery where you can help spread the word about GLBT rights by uploading an image of yourself with your message and encouraging friends and family to do the same.
In Australia, although we’ve come a long way, unjust laws and unfriendly attitudes mean that gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people don’t always get a fair go.
Homophobia and discrimination have profound negative effects on GLBT people, and especially on GLBT young people. Young people often grow up in an environment of overwhelmingly negative messages about being gay or lesbian, and school years are often the hardest. As a result, GLBT young people are more likely to start using drugs, self harm or attempt suicide.
Visit the
This is Oz photo gallery and see a wonderful collection of beautiful Aussie faces (and some from other lands) all holding messages celebrating diversity and challenging homophobia. And they are not exclusively gay people. There are Members of Parliament, sports stars and entertainers too. In fact, the photos represent a wonderful cross-section of Australian society, all joined together in presenting their own personal messages of love and support. My favourites are Matthew Mitcham, the Olympic gold medalist, who lives not far from me in Sydney. And Clover Moore, the Lord Mayor of Sydney, who is a great friend of Sydney’s gay community.
Click on this link and look through the photos. Some will bring tears to your eyes, but many more are absolutely joyous and will make you smile and laugh out loud. Enjoy!
