A Seventh Year Trivia - Are You Game?
« on: December 09, 2012, 12:55:13 am »
Thought I'd start up a (new?) trivia game testing our memory of small incidents from our movie as we approach the seventh year (itch) anniversary of our first viewing of BBM. the answers (and at least one other question) will get confirmed within a 48 hour period. Anyone can start up a new question, but I'm hoping that their answer will also be confirmed within two days everytime. Just because the first respondent gives the right answer, don't mean I'll be acknowledging it that quickly. Questions can be in the multiple answer format (or not). In order to reduce confusion, let's number our questions and refer to that number in our answer.

C'mon - let's have a little fun.

Gonna start off with an easy one ...

1- In the movie, in the 'you're late' scene, which is the first reunion after the four fuckin' years reunion, what vegetable was Jack throwing in the cooking pot?

Trivia 2 - How many stuffed animals are hanging on Aguirre's office walls? And identify them, if there are any.

2 - One, a jackaloupe (or would that count as two animals?)

according to wikipedia:

The jackalope is a mythical animal of North American folklore ...

I'd never heard of this 'animal' before so I googled it and lots of images came up including this one:

I'm not convinced that this is a correct answer, but I'll go re-check the scene when Jack & Ennis get hired.

As for the first trivia question ... yea, it WAS corn.

An over-the-top expensive rifle/shotgun in a wooden box. Sadly, Ennis had to decline the gift.

Meryl, Chrissi ... You guys are asking really tough questions that can't be answered by re-watching the movie.

I really don't know the answers to those questions and wouldn't know where to look them up!

But keep it up.

I'll be asking the more mundane questions like:

5- What was the pattern on the breast of Laureen's blouse in the "Didn't that piss-ant use to ride bulls" scene?

Looked at the hiring scene again and though the animal might look like a sort of jackalope, the horns ain't right. They don't look like antlers and the ears don't look like those of a rabbit. I think that question (#2) has yet to be properly answered.

She was played by Brooklynn Proulx, Annie's granddaughter.

I beg to differ:

Since the Jackalope is a mythical creature, it can take various forms. Often it's a Jackrabbit with antelope horns, thus the name. But it can also have deer antlers, as in your pic. The jackalope in Aguirre's trailer is a mountain hare with antelope horns.
Pet rabbits often have hanging ears, there are breeds specialised in it, so I guess the taxidermist has chosen to make the ears hanging. I think the genetic disposition for this mutation must be latent in the wild forms of rabbits, and probably also in hares. So maybe there even are some wild hares running around with lop ears, who knows?

She was played by Brooklynn Proulx, Annie's granddaughter.

The answer I was looking for was the last name of Proulx.  I was unable to find a source that confirmed she was actually related to Annie.  Several stated that she was no relation.  At the time she was in Brokeback, the actress spelled her first name with only one 'n.'

 You missed the early years, when some of us did little else but discuss the movie and story to its tiniest details. The jackrabbit came up back then. I've still had the pics from the discussion years ago, just had to upload them again. Of course, I had never heard of a jackalope before BBM. The things you learn on BM...

Roland's question (#5) is still up for grabs. :)

WELL, I guess that's that then ... When viewing the stills, my argument for a 'goat' doesn't stand the litmus test either (again because of the ears) so the community's point of view returning us to the original answer of 'jackalope' stands as correct.

Thanks Penthesilea. Congrats Front-Ranger.

I'm going to try and answer this one from memory and not use Google.

I can't remember the exact color of the blouse, but the pattern was a pair of horseshoes.  I remember thinking it looked odd, having one shoe "cup" each breast.

That's a very tough one! I can't remember anyone ever mentioning it, and that's no wonder, it's next to impossible to identify the brand. Most of the time you can't read the name when the peanuts are shown. Only for one split-second you see them in close-up, when Junior grabs for them. I had to go back and forth on my DVD a couple of times before I managed to press the pause button in the exact right half second.

The brand name is "Growers"!

Phew, hard work ;)

8. Which caracter in the movie is left-handed?

Maybe the question should read which one isn't?

Jack on some occasions does use his left hand (to catch the keys his father-in-law throws at him, when he's bull riding (I think) and when opperating a can opener).

I wouldn't be surprised to find that others are left handed as well.

Re the can opener:

It's a little hard to make out from the pics, but it looks to me like he's holding and stabilizing with his left hand, and using his right hand for opening the can.

And in any case, he's peeling the potato with his right hand:

You got me on the potato pealer but if it's a right-handed can opener (as they all are/were) and you're left-handed (as I am), how else are/were you suppose to open cans? You have to use your right hand and you're likely to do it badly.

Jack fits the profile IMO.

You're right, if he was left handed he would most likely still have to open the can (awkwardly) with his right hand. But no way would he peel a potato with a knife with his "wrong" hand.

(and btw, you can buy all kinds of tools for left handed use -among them can openers - here, I'm sure you can in Canada too)

Yes you can - nowadays, but you pay extra. Not everyone chooses to pay the premium.

More to the point, in 1963, this was not an option. Being left-handed and having gone through elementary school in the late the 50's, early 60's, I can attest that left handed scissors were not an option and I was never very good at that skill. I was never punished for using my left hand, but a half generation before mine, corrective measures (read punishment) were used to MAKE people use their right hand - so Jack using his right hand to peel potatoes might just be a reflection of his having become semi-ambidextrous.

As for today's generation ... how many left handed kids are using the left handed option for the mouse on the school computer?

We're still living in a right handed world. And so smart people are frequently left handed ... having to figure out their way in what they see as a backwards world.

Did you know that since Richard Nixon there have been only 2 right-handed (and one ambidextrous) president?

What Roland said on the handedness. I went to elementary school in the mid 70ies, and while not punished, I was often asked to use my right hand for stuff, both at home and at school. Adults were willing to let it be when I insisted on using my left hand, but they would ask again on other opportunities.
I had an especially nice set of felt-tip pens which I was allowed to color with only when using the right hand. ::)
Which of course I didn't do, and at one point my mother finally gave up.

And nobody had ever heard of scissors or other instruments for left-handed people.

As for Sonja's question: Jack also cuts the turkey with his right hand, but shaves with his left hand in the beginning (yeah, I looked it up). Was Jack the answer you wanted to hear?

As for being forced to use your right hand. Yes, unfortunately that happened a lot (I sincerely don't hope any more). I have met a lot of older people (patients), who told me they were forced to write with their right hand in school. Consequently they write with their right hand to this day, but usually do everything else with their dominant, left, hand. Usually there wasn't as much pressure on them to do other things with their right hand.

All this to say, that if Jack peels potatoes with his right hand, I would imagine he's right-handed.

That was before I checked the shaving scene that Chrissi mentioned. I would imagine shaving with your wrong hand is very difficult, and would probably not have been forced upon you. Maybe our Jake actually is ambidexter?

And, to answer your question Chrissi: no, Jack is not who I had in mind.

8. Which caracter in the movie is left-handed?

In the first 10 minutes of the movie, Jack does most things with his right hand (drinks, lights up a cigarette), but he also shaves with his left hand.

The answer you're probably seeking is Aguirre. Even though he does do a few things with his right hand (unlocks the trailer door, carries his thermos) he does a lot more with his left hand: answers phone, points, tosses watch and lights a cigarette.

I'll be checking for more lefty action in the movie as I try and remember what my next question was suppose to be.  ;D I know I had one ...

In the Thanksgiving scene, we see that Jenny is holding her fork in her left hand, so she apparently is left-handed, too.

Good pick-up, Fran!

It seems that handedness is fraught with pitfalls!

Speaking as a proud southpaw, I am predominately left handed, but I would peel potatoes with my right hand.  Somehow, I developed my knife skills on the right only.  Probably because I had my fork in my left hand!

FWIW, I would consider writing a more definitive definer of handedness than the other things mentioned.

Ennis is certainly right handed.  See below.   :)
