OK, I'm home from work and all caught up on Nickey and Jeremy.
On the way to work I heard an old favorite song on the radio.
No, not a mushy love song. But an classic from 1982.
I had to change just one Letter in a name!
MICKEY
- written by Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman
- #1 hit for Toni Basil in 1982 (released August 1982)
- lyrics as recorded by Toni Basil with cheering provided
by the 1981 Dorsey High School cheerleaders
(Oh Nickey, you're so fine
you're so fine you blow my mind, hey Nickey, hey Nickey)
(Oh Nickey, you're so fine
you're so fine you blow my mind, hey Nickey, hey Nickey)
(Oh Nickey, you're so fine
you're so fine you blow my mind, hey Nickey)
Hey Nickey!
You've been around all night and that's a little long
You think you've got the right but I think you've got it wrong
Why can't you say goodnight so you can take me home, Nickey
'Cause when you say you will, it always means you won't
You're givin' me the chills, baby, please baby don't
Every night you still leave me all alone, Nickey
Oh Nickey, what a pity you don't understand
You take me by the heart when you take me by the hand
Oh Nickey, you're so pretty, can't you understand
It's guys like you Nickey
Oh, what you do Nickey, do Nickey
Don't break my heart, Nickey
Hey Nickey!
Now when you take me by the hooves, who's ever gonna know
Everytime you move, I let a little more show
There's somethin' we can use, so don't say no, Nickey
So come on and give it to me any way you can
Any way you wanna do it, I'll treat you like a man
Oh please, baby, please, don't leave me in a jam, Nickey
Oh Nickey, what a pity you don't understand
You take me by the heart when you take me by the hand
Oh Nickey, you're so pretty, can't you understand
It's guys like you Nickey
Oh, what you do Nickey, do Nickey
Don't break my heart, Nickey
(Oh Nickey, you're so fine
you're so fine you blow my mind, hey Nickey, hey Nickey)
(Oh Nickey, you're so fine
you're so fine you blow my mind, hey Nickey, hey Nickey)
(Oh Nickey, you're so fine

A fair bit to discuss with Nick and Jeremy.
First from a physiological point of view. Ellery seems well able to cope with Ennis’ depredations – eg pushing in with a single thrust – so presumably Jeremy body will adjust. Or perhaps each person has different pain thresholds - and Ellery does like it rough! I wince every time I read about Ennis’ bone shattering entry on that first night together.
From an emotional point of view. Obviously Nick has been subjected to exploitative, even abusive treatment, by the chief petty officer and, as so often happens, he has replicated this behaviour with others. Now he has found himself in a relationship type situation in which his sexual experience can only take him so far. And even this sexual experience has been tainted by the exploitative aspect. So even while he falls back on what he knows to further the relationship sexually, that very same experience undermines the trust aspect. Jeremy could very easily start feeling used and manipulated – that his emotional vulnerability and sexual inexperience have been exploited.
Yet things are not that clear cut. Nick found himself making a declaration of love which must have shocked and confused him. He knows his past behaviours are not appropriate in a proper relationship but he doesn’t have any other models of behaviour to follow – so ironically Jeremy will have to take the lead here – as he begins to demonstrate in that last chapter. But Jeremy has been in a state of sexual and emotional confusion himself so it may be the blind leading the blind for a while.
Jeremy will probably have to be the one to set the right tone for the relationship - if indeed that is what it is going to be - or whatever interaction they have in the future, and perhaps act as a healing influence in Nick’s life. He is a very loving and decent man with a bit more emotional maturity than Nick. Once he gets his bearings again he may be the one to take the lead.
