Nick felt a shiver go up his neck as the cold gray eyes of the older man sitting across from him settled on him critically, reminding him of the feeling he had during inspection when an admiral came through. Same sharp, intelligent gaze, undistracted and unwavering. Yeah... I’d want em too if he ever gave me a look.

Maybe my view of that particular sentence is oversimplified, but I thought he was just thinking to himself that he sees what Jeremy finds attractive in Ellery .. not necessarily because he wants Ellery for himself.

After that interview with Ellery, he does reflect abit upon Ellery's words to Ennis on the phone: "I love you sweetheart" and he thinks of Jeremy, wondering if he would hear Jeremy say those words to him as well.  I suppose that says something ..  :)

Do you think it is any proof that he is going to change?  As I’ve said, I hope I’m wrong for Dupree’s sake.  (Actually, scratch that, I hope I’m right because I’ve been rooting for another character for Dupree.)

Thanks for your frank commentary yb! That thought of Nick's can be taken in several ways.

1. He might be just trying to understand and accept how Dupree could have felt attracted to Ellery. This is called empathy - putting yourself in another's shoes. A less promising approach would have been jealous hostility and a readiness to think the worst of Ellery.

2. He might be registering sexual attraction without an intention to follow through. Wanting is not always going after.

3. He might be acknowleging that he would be seriously tempted if Ellery gave him the come hither.

4. He might be thinking that if Ellery gave him half a chance he would be in his pants.

Take your pick!

This story is bringing out the tragic poet in your soul David!

Thanks, Lucise and Jo, for responding to my post, obviously my pick is number 4,  :).  But it’s all good discussion and I enjoy every bit of it.

It does seem Dupree has made his choice momentarily, and I have resigned to accept this scenario.  I really have no idea what Louise has in store for us ahead, but I’m sure it’ll be a hell of a roller-coaster ride until the story wraps up.

Nick's inner angel

•   He appears to come from a supportive and loving family in terms of his childhood upbringing so his bad experiences in the navy may have resulted in only short-term damage that can be overcome

•   He has not been drummed out of the navy for bad conduct so he hasn't gotten into serious trouble there as far as we know

•   He was patient with Dupree and did not try to push him into having sex before he was ready and responded immediately when Jeremy felt pain

•   He is responsible about the use of condoms so his self destructive tendencies are not extreme and he has sufficient sense of duty to protect others from possible infection

•   He had a guilty conscience about lying to Dupree and came clean (beginnings of trust?)

•   He did not blame Dupree for him getting drunk and going off the deep end or try to manipulate his way out of trouble

•   He did not start the fight with Lance

•   He is willing to work and try to make amends

•   He shows signs of seeing a role model in Ennis and Ellery's relationship

•   He is strongly attracted to Dupree rather than someone who will brutalise him further so his self esteem is not that low. At some level must believe he can be worthy of a man like Jeremy.

Well I guess all that gives the guy a more than even chance to come through this rough patch in his young life.

Thank you for this thorough and optimistic Nick’s psychoanalyze Jo :)

I saw QAF, Ted and his fallen angel were my favorite couple as their relationship impressed me more than Brian/Justin’s.
They both tried to see the good in each other ( but ridiculously not in themselves) and self-denying they wanted save  one from bad another, even they went through the role reversal  ….- which leads me to a question

We have “good Jeremy” and “bad” Nick, but how much “good” ?
Do we expect him to start and stop getting his experiences by Nick when his step into the gay world was mildly said – a bit wild? Do we expect him not to be tempted as Nick as he picked up for his very first time absolute stranger just because he was hot looking and tempting and brought him home after couple of hours for pure sex  experience without any  deeper feeling, without any further relationship in his mind ( still he is not sure about having relationship at all).
Wasn’t all that a bit Nickish too? Or, I’m the one old fashioned here? Jevees would be more appropriate for image of “good Jeremy”.
I know we are so protective of Jeremy, but Jo  is right Nobody is all bad or all good. Nick could go either way.
So could Jeremy
Both they got their pluses and minuses, lets see how they are getting along with them
