Nick felt a shiver go up his neck as the cold gray eyes of the older man sitting across from him settled on him critically, reminding him of the feeling he had during inspection when an admiral came through. Same sharp, intelligent gaze, undistracted and unwavering. Yeah... I’d want em too if he ever gave me a look.

Do you think it is any proof that he is going to change?  As I’ve said, I hope I’m wrong for Dupree’s sake.  (Actually, scratch that, I hope I’m right because I’ve been rooting for another character for Dupree.)

--- End quote ---

YB, I think I'm with you in your thoughts here. I too think that it looks as if the story is reaching a conclusion where Nick and Dupree will be together, though I also was hoping for a different character for Dupree in the end. To contrast the (possibly) negative implications of the quote you've given, there is also the much more optimistic implication of Nick's reflecting on Ellery's words to Ennis on the phone: "I love you sweetheart" and hoping that eventually he might hear that from Dupree.

On a different level of reading, there is still another reason for assuming we'll be getting a Nick/Dupree happy ending: Simply, there are now no longer any viable alternatives left there in Laramie. After reading about Jeeves' romp in the rumpus room with Lance, we must surely be glad that Dupree isn't going to have to experience that if he'd chosen Jeeves. I think we can finally rule out him, and then we have to recognise there isn't anyone else who could seriously be considered among the unattached gay men we've seen so far. All the good ones are taken!

(Now, let's see Louise come along and counfound all our expectations). :-\

Mmm, judging from the interactions between Dupree and Jeeves before Nick entered the scene, I’m pretty sure Jeeves would not forcibly use that toy on Dupree without his consent; if he was such a person, he would have got it on with Dupree already the night Dupree was drunk.  But it’s all a moot point now.  This really has to be my last comment on this, I’ll be along the ride that Louise has for us.

We have “good Jeremy” and “bad” Nick, but how much “good” ?
Do we expect him to start and stop getting his experiences by Nick when his step into the gay world was mildly said – a bit wild? Do we expect him not to be tempted as Nick as he picked up for his very first time absolute stranger just because he was hot looking and tempting and brought him home after couple of hours for pure sex  experience without any  deeper feeling, without any further relationship in his mind ( still he is not sure about having relationship at all).
Wasn’t all that a bit Nickish too? Or, I’m the one old fashioned here?

Synne I think you have put your finger on something. Surely Dupree must have his darker side too which we haven't seen much of. And yes - he did allow himself to be picked up for sex by Nick after having just met him.

Within the context of gay culture as presented in the Red Stallion, pairing off for instant sexual gratification seems to be a norm in the bar scene. I think we have to take this into consideration too when judging Nick's actions.

PS I was thinking at the time how much easier things appear to be for many gay guys in this respect. Some girls might do this (pick up or be picked up in 5 minutes) but I think most women are heavily socialised against acting this way for a range of reasons.

I agree. My thoughts when I read that Jeeves/Lance scene we're "lets see him try THAT with Dupree....".

I too am learning to accept Jeremy/Nick, mainly because I think Jeremy is developing real feelings for Nick. And I want Jeremy to be happy.

I just don't trust Nick too much. A reminder of Nick's thoughts on chapter 27:

They didn’t actually... kick me out the door,” Nick said, clearing his throat.

“Oh?” Eyebrows shot up over those gray, piercing eyes.
He is the type ta call my momma an rat me out. Jeremy this wasn’t such a hot idea...

I don't know.... if he comes clean to Ellery (after "embellishing" the facts to Jeremy), only because he's afraid Ellery will "rat him out", I'm not sure he has the backbone and honesty I think Jeremy's chosen mate should have.
Also, the matter of "outing" Jeremy in front of his colleagues leaves me feeling uneasy.  :-\

Plus, given his track records, his job at the Red-Stallion could lead him into seriuos temptation.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see.. :)
