Ennis leaned back against the door of the trailer.  He had adjusted the shirts, and straightened the card.  Nothing else to do for the evening.   . . . .
He looked at the clock on the wall and decided it was time to head on home.  Had to
get back to work pretty early in the morning.  He placed his empty bottle on the shiny wooden bar, and walked slowly out.  Heading for another night alone.

Janice, you painted such a poignant picture of heartbreak and desolation - great writing.

Childress, Texas June 1989 [Part 3] . . .
 . . .
"What?" they said in unison.

Love that!  And I love the "Dad" and "Pop" too.  So glad you continued this.

. . . .But then the smoke cleared and one more rocket went up to the sky.  It erupted into a huge ball of brilliant blue embers.  Ennis stared at the bright blue lights dancing among the stars.  He watched them as they drifted down towards them.  Then he looked up again at the sparkling stars.  Ennis squeezed the Artist’s hand and smiled, a real smile this time.  Everything was all right.

Blue embers and bright blue lights, of course.  I need a smiley emoticon that's also crying.  Beautifully done. Marl, have you considered gathering all the "Artist" drabbles in one place?  Be great to read them back to back.

Nice holiday drabble day!
Marie

I need some quiet time after all the fireworks!   :)  How about these prompts for today:

Blue lights among the stars.  His Jack looking down on him from high above.

Glad Ennis has found happiness three times in his life, first and forever with Jack, and then Tom, and now The Artist.  He deserves it. Really great.  Still, sure would like to know what was on that postcard he never read that night before he went back to The Artist.

Thanks.

Thank you, so much, Marie and Cowboy!!

I am glad you enjoyed that.  For the holiday, for a change I wanted to do a 'happy' drabble, so I decided to go back to the Artist. It may be true or it may be AU, we'll see. ;)

Thanks again,

Marl

Quiet Time

It was not a secret place, but a perfect place for secret thoughts.  He found himself there when he got tired.  Tired of smiling.  Tired of glad-handing.  Tired of backslapping.  Tired of storytelling.  Tired of yes-sirring.  Tired of pretending.  Tired of talking.  Tired of ...everything.

He smiled at the notion that this place reminded him of Ennis.  Quiet, pensive, sober.  Full of words and passions hidden deep between the covers.  So another evening was spent at the library, longing for the tranquil solitude of their days together.  Days when he was never tired, but truly comfortable and at peace.

                           Germ of an idea

She sat in the library.  Thinking the strange feelings and thoughts she
had had the night before.  That lonesome cowboy.  Her mind traversed the lure of him again.  Was he a friend of those young men?  Did he wish to join the group, but was too shy to risk rejection.  Had he been called by another name, or remembering some long ago time?  Had he lost someone dear and long ago, or was it a love he wished to recall?  How many years since he was young and vital, alive and happy?  Or was he forever one of the lonely souls?

“There, it’s out.”  Ennis reached between Jack’s legs and squeezed.  “Found the marshmallows!”

   Now I know what I´m gonna think of next time I´m grilling marshmallows... Great, Clyde!

(Back to this now....)

After the Fire

(June 1982)
Ennis slowly walked back to his trailer.  He turned around and took one last look at the bonfire, the voices had drifted away, but the fire was still bright.  He went inside, longing for the solitude again.  Ennis took one more beer out of the fridge and sat down at the table.  He closed his eyes, but there still was no peace.

Ennis went to the tv and turned it on, but there was barely any reception at all.  Then he picked up a magazine that was by the tv.  It was from the library, Cassie had left it there.  He turned the pages.  It was a travel magazine, filled with pictures of all sorts of far way places.  He turned the pages and stopped at an article with pictures of beaches.  There were pictures of white sands and the ocean with rolling waves.  But then Ennis noticed the title, ‘The Beaches of Mexico.’  He quickly closed the magazine and threw it down on the floor.

Ennis stood up and looked all around the tiny, dark trailer.  He took one last sip of beer and opened up the windows as wide as they could go.  Then he went to bed.  There was nothing else to do.

But even in bed, Ennis couldn’t get comfortable.  He turned from side to side and back again.  He tried to close his eyes, but the fire was dancing in front of his eyes.  The voices were in his head, the children shrieking and laughing, Bill Jensen going on and on, the children again, and then Jack’s voice, angry and accusing.  The bonfire was growing brighter, then the light of the last campfire growing dimmer, then the bonfire again, growing even fiercer, the voices becoming ever even louder.  “Hey, you in there?”

Ennis felt his heart jump.  “Hey, you in there?”  Ennis sat up on the bed, not knowing if the pounding was at the door or in his head.  “Hey, you in there?  You gotta be, open the door, gotta talk to ya.”

Ennis slowly walked to the door……
