(Back to this now....)After the Fire
(June 1982)
Ennis slowly walked back to his trailer. He turned around and took one last look at the bonfire, the voices had drifted away, but the fire was still bright. He went inside, longing for the solitude again. Ennis took one more beer out of the fridge and sat down at the table. He closed his eyes, but there still was no peace.
Ennis went to the tv and turned it on, but there was barely any reception at all. Then he picked up a magazine that was by the tv. It was from the library, Cassie had left it there. He turned the pages. It was a travel magazine, filled with pictures of all sorts of far way places. He turned the pages and stopped at an article with pictures of beaches. There were pictures of white sands and the ocean with rolling waves. But then Ennis noticed the title, ‘The Beaches of Mexico.’ He quickly closed the magazine and threw it down on the floor.
Ennis stood up and looked all around the tiny, dark trailer. He took one last sip of beer and opened up the windows as wide as they could go. Then he went to bed. There was nothing else to do.
But even in bed, Ennis couldn’t get comfortable. He turned from side to side and back again. He tried to close his eyes, but the fire was dancing in front of his eyes. The voices were in his head, the children shrieking and laughing, Bill Jensen going on and on, the children again, and then Jack’s voice, angry and accusing. The bonfire was growing brighter, then the light of the last campfire growing dimmer, then the bonfire again, growing even fiercer, the voices becoming ever even louder. “Hey, you in there?”
Ennis felt his heart jump. “Hey, you in there?” Ennis sat up on the bed, not knowing if the pounding was at the door or in his head. “Hey, you in there? You gotta be, open the door, gotta talk to ya.”
Ennis slowly walked to the door……
