Planning a Visit to Brokeback Mountain? Here's the Inside Scoop
« on: February 10, 2006, 03:43:48 am »
Several people have wondered if there is a "Brokeback Mountain" in real life.  The answer is no.  Annie Proulx wanted Brokeback Mountain to be filmed in Wyoming, but resources on the ground, and expenses, made that impractical.  The film's outdoor scenes take place in the Canadian Rockies, about an hour's drive west of Calgary, Alberta.  The film crew stayed in Canmore, a ski resort town in western Alberta just inside the mountain range.  Here is a rundown of film locations:

"Brokeback Mountain" scenes were filmed in Kananaskis Country, provincial parkland in the Canadian Rockies.  Virtually all of the camping and vista scenes were filmed in the Upper Kananaskis Lakes campground.  Scenes surrounding water were primarily filmed around Mud Lake and King Creek in the same park.

The "nude diving scene" was filmed on cliffs in Seebe, Alberta.

Most of the scenes "in town" along the Main Street with Ennis and Alma were filmed in Crossfield, Alberta.

Many of the other scenes of small town life, including the vast prairies further out in the country were filmed in Fort Macleod, Alberta.

Other filming locations included the city of Calgary and Irricana, Alberta.

La Mesilla, New Mexico served as "Mexico" in the film.
