39. Have you seen the movie "Donnie Darko"? Yes. I have it on DVD. I don't understand it though.

Hey David - I only saw Donnie Darko about  month ago, when it screened on television here in Australia. Like you, I didn't understand it at all. I did a search in Google and found an excellent entry in Wikipedia. It explained a lot, but I'm still in the dark (pun intended!) about much of it. I can recommend the Wikipedia  entry to you lol.

I was still at a loss, even after reading the Wikipedia entry, but it did fill in some of the gaps. As you say, though, it was worthwhile watching, just to see and hear Jake. I love his voice. His eyes and his ass, too! Tee-hee!

If you watch the Director's Cut, and/or watch it with the director's (and Jake's - delicious) commentary, it explains a lot more.

I actually enjoy it much more for being a family/high school comedy/drama than for being a sci-fi/fantasy type of thing.  And I enjoy the "reluctant Messiah" aspect of it.  Ultimately, Donnie knows he has to die so that Gretchen, Frank, and his mother and sister (and all those other people on the plane) can live.  So when he sees the time portal opening up over his house at the end, he accepts that he has to go back there and be crushed by that engine.  Really, he accepts this when he says to Frank's friend in the clown suit after he shoots Frank, "Go home.  And tell your Mom and Dad everything's going to be OK!"

Did that help, or just muddy the waters all the more?

Several of my favorite lines come from that movie, too, like "What makes you think I'm not (a superhero)?" and "I think we've all seen 'Bonanza.'"  Also, the sweet, awkward way Donnie asks Gretchen to 'go with' him is just The Shit.
