I will definitely see this one (especially for the Zodiac trailer... ::) )
BTW Lucise, I love your Shane avatar :)
I'm a bit hesitant. I heard from someone who has already seen it that they are basing the movie more on Ian Fleming's stories, Bond isn't the cinematic Bond we all know and love (shaken, not stirred). I understand they want to humanize Bond, to show growth by essentially starting over, but the whole point to James Bond was that he was above and beyond what mere mortals could do.
I'll see it over the Thanksgiving weekend when I'm visiting family. I'm sure it will be showing there and it will give me something to do. ;) What glamorous cities/locations does Casino Royale take place?
The Jake movie trailer makes the film sound worthwhile. So now we know Jake's character in ZODIAC is a cartoonist who was an Eagle scout member. Okay!
I understand that. And I think it's the reason I like it better than all the others (except maybe for the Sean Connery ones - yeow).
You still believe he is above and beyond what mere mortals can do, and that's chiefly because Daniel Craig was the perfect selection to both humanize him and show how super-human he is. The guy moves like an Olympic sprinter - maybe even more elegantly. You really believe he can catch what should be a faster man or a moving vehicle just by running. And he's buff enough to make you believe he has super-human strength, too.
I liked seeing how he got his first Astin Martin and how he came to like his martinis. Maybe I'm all about demythologizing icons, I dunno. But it didn't take too much away from the idea that he's extraordinary.
It actually came closer than I've ever seen to humanizing M, too. If you don't want to see just a glimpse of a softer side to her, you might want to steer clear.
Yes, it is absolutely true. Think of it as "Bond Begins." :)
Ooh - glad you loved it so much!
Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I enjoyed it, too. I like how he's more ruthless and has a certain meanness to him like Ian Fleming wrote him - the only other one that even hints properly at that is Sean Connery's incarnation, I think. Daniel Craig and the writing on this one make him almost a rogue vigilante, really. I likey. I likey muchy.
Saw Casino Royale yesterday.
1.) The Black stuntman in the opening sequence - Un-fricking-believable! Danile Craig - great but you couldn't take your eyes off this other guy (didn't catch his name).

2.) O M G !!!!! Just not fair!
3.) Hmmmmm - loved Bond. Did NOT buy the love relationship (don't want to provide any spoilers) - Not at all...sorry.
4.) Jake. Yes. But No. I didn't get the rush I got (get) from seeing him in Brokeback. He looks (don't hit) plain.
Oh well, I will probably see it today. I always think Bond movies are incredibly formulistic, but there's not alot out there I wanta see today.
Especially #3 - I found the relationship tacked on and unnecessary, and though I understood the intention of including it, I thought it did nothing to move the narrative forward and it fact probably the only flaw in an otherwise perfect movie.
1. The stunt work, especially in the construction site scene, is amazing.
2. Daniel Craig's smokin' hot body and the kind of blue eyes you can see across a room
3. It seems to take the Bond franchise in a darker, more vigilante (I likey) direction.
4. A little matter of a trailer from a certain movie being released this March. (i.e., Jakey on the big screen again, and not one moment too soon - by the way, everyone in the packed theater chuckled at "Eagle Scout. First Class." And everyone around me murmured "That looks good" when it was over. I'm a tad biased, so it's hard for me to judge.)
And don't ya just love that we have Bond walking out of the ocean like that?! ;)
'Bout time!
oh yeah. it's right up there with the shot of Ursula Andres in her bikini. Come to think of it, Casino Royale has more views of man flesh than women's.
Okay, one person I've talked to said that he thought Daniel Craig played Bond like an assasin/ hit-man (Collateral) as oppose to a Secret agent. I guess he thinks secret agents should be more debonair and their faces shouldn't look all roughed up. Course he likes Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan. ;)

I'm inclined to go and see it just because the people who want us to boycott it seem to be such idiots.
And, well...

Ah, yes, those eyes... That song "Electric Blue" comes to mind...
"Are you hiding somewhere behind those eyes?"
I remember when word first came out that Daniel Craig was going to be the new Bond. I thought, "Cool! Maybe I'll actually go see one of those movies!" People pooh-poohed the choice and I said, "I take it you haven't seen "Layer Cake." (BTW, RUN, don't walk, to your nearest Ballbuster and rent that sucker STAT - "sexy" doesn't even begin to cover it.) And they'd say, "No. Why? Good?" And I'd say "I remember liking it, but mostly I remember those eyes."
Yep. He'll do just fine. When does the next one come out? ;)
Who wants us to boycott it?These people (http://www.danielcraigisnotbond.com/).
These people (http://www.danielcraigisnotbond.com/).
People were skeptical about D. Craig's ability to pull off Bond .. that and "he's not tall enough"
how tall is Craig anyhow? and I don't think Brosnan was all that tall either.
5' 11", I guess..
let me gush a bit more about this movie. As a graphic designer, I love title sequence design when they're done well. The Bond films are usually extravagant with their title designs. I have to say, this one is the best I've seen of the Bond films. It's beautifully conceptualized and visually complex. Yet another way they broke away from the formula is that they didn't use naked women to hold your attention. If they still gave away Oscars for title designs, this would be nominated for sure.
btw, did any one see D Craig in Infamouse (http://imdb.com/title/tt0420609/). I'm not sure I could take another movie about Capote, but this one is suppose to be superior. It did go down a different path, taking the relationship between Capote and Perry (played by Criag) toward a romantic one.
Ooh! Pick me! Pick me! I saw it. I don't know that I'd say it was superior to "Capote," but it was as good or nearly as good in different ways. For one, it delved quite a bit more into Perry's character. And Harper Lee's. And as much as I still hold "Crash" against her, Sandra Bullock was really wonderful as the latter. Totally believable in the part, and I don't think all that much of her acting one way or the other usually. I mean, she's OK, but she always seems to be just being herself. Not this time. Not at all.
When did it open in North America?
Do the Bumpity bump ..

That's not all I'd like to do with him, but it's a good start...
Just because the "Bond Girls" are stunners too!
WARNING! Spoilers
OK I finally went and saw it today. It was good. Not spectacular, but good.
Definately noticed how the opening credits didn't have the usual naked ladies in it. That was refreshing.
Footchase/construction site scene was excellent.
Did notice the authentic TSA uniforms in the Airport scene, but the screening proceedures were all wrong. They would have ran that guys keys thru the Xray and seen the Improvised explosive device.
Special effects were excellent thru out the film.
As usual, the film was set in beautiful locations. I loved the big Villa at the very end of the movie. Or was that a castle? It was huge. And lake side, thats always a nice touch.
The Poker game went too long.
The ending was predictable. You know that James may get the girl, but he never gets to keep them.
Oh yeah, the bad guy was creepy, but his death was too quick and painless.
And how the heck could Bond have had sex so quickly after that torture? I'm still squirming after that.
Overall a good film. It did seem kinda long though.
I agree. I never understood why people enjoy watching poker games on ESPN or whatever. I thought it went on a bit too long.
and didn't any one expect that guy's eye to have some function, plot wise? Like it held a secret to his being so good at poker or something. I guess I was still expecting him to be like the old Bond villains, to have distinguishing characteristic that are deadly.
I thought they were very attractive too. The first girl has that Charlotte Rampling sleepy-eye thing that is really hot, but in the movie, she wore make-up like she didn't know how. Like a little girl playing with her mom's makeup kit.Well, Eva Green is actually quite well known in France. She has a famous mother, so that helps.
The other girl is a Penelope Cruz look-alike whose looks just makes you squirm and wonder where do they find these women?
And don't tell me that the first thug in the Bahamas didn't look like a bad version of Michael Richards. (Kramer from Seinfeld!)
Ooh, yes they did, didn't they? Even the beginning credit roll lacked the standard naked women lolling around.Very true. Noticed it too right away and prefer it! I liked th beginning credits a lot actually. Loved the design.
Can't wait to see more of Jeffrey Wright (in the next Bond or elsewhere!). There are rumors that "Bond 22" (2008) will include some gay scenes and somewhere I read that Jeffrey Wright's character will be Bond's love interest... ?! In any case, I'm not against any gay scenes in the next Bond film. It would explain the lacking 'lolling-around women' in the opening credits.. And there was some homoeroticism running around between Bond and Le Chiffre, you can't deny that!! :P
j. U. d. E.
Jeffrey Wright? That was the Felix Lighter Character right?
The last movie I saw him in was the remake of Shaft. He was a drug lord in that one.
No, I can't see a gay-bi theme in the next Bond movie. It just wont happen.
I did like the intro with the card effects instead of flying naked ladies.
As generous as I am, I thought I'd share this very rugged pic.. 8)

Now that's the way a man should fit his swimsuit.
I heard on E! TV that Daniel Craig said he wouldn't mind if the new Bond went homo-erotic with some characters. After all, he said (or maybe the host said) it IS the 21st century.I can't believe it will happen. Now some lesbians lolling around until Bond "cures" them, that I can believe. It may have even happened already.
Wow, you do like CR! It was really fun--any thing stick out to you more on subsequent viewings?
And I missed how the martini thing came to be a favorite here -- I thought it was just already a given that he liked them.
I love how they set you up for the old cliché and then cheekily not give you what you expected. "Shaken or Stirred?" "Do I look like I give a damn?"
I had heard this line before I saw the movie and the context in which it is spoken in the movie was not explained ot me, so this line made it sound like Bond was still 'rough around the edges' and didn't have the taste he grew to have in martinis (shaking the martini apparently dilutes the drink less than stirring it), instead,SPOILERS!!!!!!!!! SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!! SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!
he does like martinis and is quite knowledgeable about his drinks and this line is spoken when he's distracted and angry.

I think Barb mentioned this--what I like most about Daniel Craig is his brutal quality, which I think was the secret of Sean Connery's Bond. He had a cruel look that made you fear and respect him as one who needed to kill as part of his job. As handsome as he is, Craig's face and eyes remind me of nothing so much as a copperhead snake, deadly and utterly ready to strike. The more debonair Bonds fade into the woodwork in comparison.
Wow - like a copperhead snake - that's exactly it, Meryl. Good call. Yep - I agree that the only other Bond that even compares to Daniel Craig's is Sean Connery's. Needless to say, that's saying A LOT.
