Come On Along And Play The TV Game!
« on: May 28, 2007, 05:47:28 pm »
Back before the days of short attention span television, American TV networks routinely ran lengthy promotions to celebrate the traditional launch of the new television season in September of each year.  Most networks adopted a slogan for the year and an "image campaign" to tie shows together and try to sell viewers on the latest and greatest, as well as the returning greats for each year.  This is done far less often these days as network schedules seem to run all year, and networks are spending fewer dollars on these kinds of grandiose campaigns.

In fact, outside of the United States, the only country that spends as much on these efforts (and frequently adopts American campaigns as their own) is Australia, whose television networks probably most closely resemble American and Canadian TV.  Our Aussie friends will no doubt recognize some of these slogans from their own networks which licensed them.

Since most of these shows were syndicated around the world, I'm sure folks will recognize many of them.  How many can you pick out, and include their character names if you can!

The Year: 1982  The Network: ABC  --  First major year into the Reagan era in the United States, and the Americana is laid on thick and heavy as American networks began responding to a more conservative approach to television programming.  ABC was most popular with young viewers at the time, but this promotion was an effort to appeal to older and more rural audiences away from CBS which had their allegiance for more than two decades.  This campaign was filmed in NY City, and you'll instantly notice two buildings which aren't there any longer.
