“AS THE WORLD TURNS”

TELEPLAY

<FADE IN>

SCENE: THE LAKEVIEW HOTEL LOBBY

LILY IS STANDING NEAR THE FRONT DESK, LOOKING OVER
SOME PAPERS. DUSTY APPEARS BEHIND HER.

DUSTY:
Lily! You're alright!
I heard you'd gone to the police station.

LILY:
I'm sure you did, Dusty.
I practically did so at your urging.

DUSTY:
I didn't want you to go
to the police, Lily.
We could have handled it better
if we hadn't involved the police.

LILY:
Well, it turns out you were wrong
about what Noah said.

DUSTY:
Really? How odd.
I heard him say he was going to leave.

LILY:
No. He was thinking about going
to Northwestern, but decided to stay.
Because of Luke.

DUSTY HESITATES TO RESPOND:
Are you sure that he
was telling you the truth?
I mean, he has every reason to
lie to you.

LILY SCOFFS AT DUSTY:
I spent the weekend
with my boys, and I'll tell you something.
Noah is respectful, genuine, and intelligent.
He doesn't need to lie, and hasn't yet.

DUSTY STARES AT LILY FOR A MOMENT.

<FADE OUT>

<OPENING TITLES>

<COMMERCIAL>

<FADE IN>

DUSTY IS STARING AT LILY.

DUSTY:
If you're sure about that.
From what I understand, Noah
lied to Maddie to the point
of nearly destroying everything.
And to his father as well, I might add.

LILY:
Yes, coming out was difficult for him.
But was that really such a fiendish deception?
He didn't even lie very well.
Maddie and I knew something was wrong
even before Noah told us what was going on.

DUSTY:
So?

LILY:
So unless he's gotten a great deal
better at lying, then he's not lying now.

LILY SHAKES HER HEAD.

LILY:
I can't believe I let you tell me
that Noah was lying to me, and the next
time anyone says anything like that, I'm going
to go ask him myself,
rather than take their word for it.

DUSTY SHAKES HER HEAD:
You're throwing away our friendship so easily then, Lily?

LILY:
No, Dusty, I think you already did that a long
time ago.

DUSTY BECOMES DESPERATE:
Lily, you know how much you mean to me.
How much you've always meant to me.

LILY:
Do I?
Dusty, you've become more and more withdrawn
and hidden from me the more I try to get
to know you. Its like you keep
hiding things that are important.

DUSTY:
That's not true, Lily.
I love you!

LILY SCOFFS:
Love? I'm not even sure you know
what that means anymore.

<FADE OUT>

<COMMERCIAL>

<FADE IN>

SCENE: A STATE PRISON.

WINSTON MEYER IS SPEAKING WITH SOMEONE USING THE GLASS WALLED PHONE BOOTHS.

WINSTON:
Just keep an eye on Mr. Donovan for me.
He's got some of my money, and
I would hate to see something
happen to him before he can get it back.

MYSTERIOUS STRANGER:
Right, Colonel.
I've got you covered.

WINSTON:
Good.

<TRANSITION>

SCENE: THE LAKEVIEW LOBBY

DUSTY IS AGGRAVATED WITH LILY:
I can't believe you would
say something like that, Lily.

LILY:
It's true.
I've seen love, Dusty.
I spent the whole weekend with it.
And what we have...
is nothing like that.

DUSTY:
But what about the gifts and the flowers and -

LILY:
They don't mean a thing if there's no
thought or feeling behind them.
You think that love is doing something
nice for someone else?
No, Dusty. If you think you have
the right to control someone else
just because you give them something -
that doesn't mean you're in love.

<PAUSE>

LILY (CONT'D):
You're in love with
someone when you think about
them all the time.
And want to spend
every waking moment with
that person.
You're in love when
you do things without
being asked to.
You're in love when
you make time to
make love happen.

DUSTY IS CRESTFALLEN.

DUSTY:
Then what we had means nothing?

LILY:
It may have meant something, once,
a long time ago.
Now, it's nothing more than a distraction.

<FADE OUT>

<COMMERCIAL>

<FADE IN>

SCENE: THE SNYDER FARMHOUSE.

HOLDEN IS WASHING DISHES AT THE SINK.

LUCINDA RAPS ON THE SCREEN DOOR AND ENTERS.

HOLDEN:
Ah, my other mama. Come on in, Mrs. Walsh.
Is Lily alright?

LUCINDA (LIGHTLY):
Oh, as far as I know.
You'd know better than me.

HOLDEN:
What can I help you with today?

LUCINDA:
Oh, well I realized I hadn't seen
Luke and Noah since Christmas service.
And didn't really meet Noah before.
I thought I should give him the once over, at least.

HOLDEN:
I think they went out to the barn.

LUCINDA:
Oh dear, the hayloft?

HOLDEN SHAKES HIS HEAD, CHUCKLING:
Strangely enough, no.
Would you like some coffee, or some of
my Mama's cookies.

LUCINDA:
Emma always did make the best cookies.
Alright, I'll take some refreshment,
so long as you retrieve the boys.

HOLDEN NODS AND GETS HER A CUP AND SMALL PLATE
OF COOKIES BEFORE DISAPPEARING OUT THE DOOR.

EMMA ENTERS CARRYING ETHAN.

EMMA:
Ah, Lucinda. How nice of you to visit me.
So few people do any more.

LUCINDA:
Nonsense, Emma. Your house is always full.
It's amazing how you can keep
track of everyone.
And there's my other grandson!
Hello, little Ethan!

LUCINDA COOS AT ETHAN, AND HOLDS HER ARMS OUT TO HOLD HIM.
EMMA PASSES ETHAN TO LUCINDA.

<FADE OUT>

<COMMERCIAL>

<FADE IN>

LUKE QUIETLY APPEARS OUTSIDE THE SCREEN DOOR, WATCHING
LUCINDA HOLD ETHAN AND PLAY WITH HIM.

LUKE ENTERS:
Grandmother! You came to visit!

LUKE HUGS LUCINDA CAREFULLY.
LUCINDA HANDS ETHAN BACK TO EMMA, WHO TAKES HIM WITH A SMILE.

LUKE:
Come out on the porch, grandmother. I
want you to meet someone.

LUCINDA:
I'd be delighted. Emma, will you join us?

EMMA:
Oh no. I'll stay in here with little Ethan.

LUKE AND LUCINDA EXIT THROUGH THE SCREEN DOOR.

<TRANSITION>

SCENE: THE SNYDER FARMHOUSE PORCH

NOAH AND HOLDEN ARE STANDING IN THE CORNER

LUKE:
Grandmother, you already know my dad. But
the young man with him is Noah Meyer.
Noah, this is my other grandmother.

NOAH MOVES FORWARD TO GREET LUCINDA.
Mrs. Walsh. It's so nice to finally meet you.

LUCINDA SMILES, ENJOYING NOAH'S ATTENTION.

LUCINDA:
Thank you, young man. I've heard a lot about you
when I can get my daughter and grandchildren to
talk to me. You also have my gratitude for
helping Luke to walk again
and for saving my granddaughter Natalie.

NOAH:
I only did what I thought anybody else in
my situation would do.

LUCINDA:
Sometimes thats what brings out the hero in
all of us.

NOAH:
Yes, ma'am.

LUCINDA:
But I would like to know one thing.

NOAH:
What's that?

LUCINDA:
Are you and Luke alright?
Has anyone threatened you two?

NOAH IS CONFUSED, MAKES EYE CONTACT WITH LUKE.
LUKE LOOKS BACK AT NOAH.
LUCINDA NOTICES THE EXCHANGE.

<FADE OUT>

<COMMERCIAL>

<FADE IN>

LUKE:
We're fine, grandmother. No one's said
anything to us, other than Colonel Meyer.
Even Maddie was understanding...

NOAH:
No one's said anything bad to me, either.
I just... am afraid that they might.

LUCINDA:
I think everyone's afraid
of what other people might do.
It's not something we can control.

NOAH:
Yeah, I know.

LUCINDA:
Well, I want you two to be safe and happy,
and to have all the wonderful things
and experiences I know
you'll be able to have.
So don't let other people get in the way.

LUCINDA TOUCHES LUKE'S HAIR, BRUSHING
IT AWAY FROM HIS FOREHEAD.

LUCINDA (CONT'D):
And most importantly, don't let your own
fears and misgivings get in the way.
If something is really, really bad,
talk to someone. Anyone.
Even if you don't think they'll understand.
You're surrounded by people that care for you.

LUKE SMILES AT LUCINDA:
That's good advice. I could have used it earlier in my life.

LUCINDA NODS:
I know.
And we can be thankful that
what you did wasn't completely irreversible.

LUKE LOOKS DOWN BASHFULLY.

NOAH:
What happened, Luke?

LUKE:
I had a drinking problem...
After getting a new kidney.

LUCINDA TURNS TO HOLDEN AND COCKS HER HEAD TOWARD NOAH.

LUCINDA:
I like him. Knows all the right questions to ask.
Much smarter and cuter than that other boy, Kevin.

NOAH:
Kevin? That guy that used to be your friend?

LUCINDA:
Oh.. and that's my cue to leave.

LUKE:
Already? You just got here...

LUCINDA:
I know, Luke. But I have
other errands to run today.

LUCINDA PATS NOAH ON THE CHEEK AS SHE WALKS BY HIM.

LUCINDA:
Be good to him, my boy.
Luke needs all the love he can get.

LUKE:
Yes, Ma'am.

LUCINDA EXITS.

NOAH TURNS TO LUKE:
Okay. Wow...

LUKE:
Wow?

NOAH:
Yeah, just.... wow.

LUKE LAUGHS:
She does sometimes have that effect on people.

<FADE IN>

SCENE: THE LAKEVIEW LOBBY

LILY IS CHECKING OFF ON SOME PAPERS.

DUSTY APPEARS BEHIND HER AGAIN.

LILY SENSES HIS PRESENCE.

LILY:
Dusty. I don't want you
to think that I don't
appreciate our friendship.
We had some good times
in our youth.
I think you might have
even loved me once.
But I am going
to have to ask you to
leave the Lakeview.
Its not appropriate that
you should be staying here
anymore.

DUSTY IS DERANGED, EVEN MORE OUT OF
CONTROL THEN HE WAS PREVIOUSLY.

DUSTY:
Lily!
You can't do this to me.
I need to be with you!

LILY TURNS SHARPLY:
I'm beginning to see
that you think you do.
My only question is:
Why?

DUSTY:
Because – Because...

OK, I have to post the following news and I am not sure if this is the right thread for this:

Van is chosen as the #1 Actor of 2007, with Jon Hensley (Holden) #2 at Daytime Confidential.  I have to admit I know nothing about US media, I have no idea whether this is of significant value or not, but I am very happy for them, I love them both.

Here's the link to the article:

http://www.daytimeconfidential.com/tags/as-the-world-turns

That's great! I had heard some good news from a site called Soap Talk, concerning awards given to Van and Jake.

TELEPLAY

<FADE IN>

SCENE: THE LAKEVIEW LOBBY

DUSTY IS STANDING BEFORE LILY, COMPLETELY TORN
AND UNABLE TO TELL LILY THE THRUTH.
LILY LOOKS AT HIM SADLY.

LILY:
You can't tell me why you want to be with me?

DUSTY (SIGHS):
No. Because that would ruin every chance
I have of being with you.

LILY:
There is no chance, Dusty.
None at all.

DUSTY LOOKS DOWN, THINKING HARD.

LILY:
Go collect your things, Dusty.
I'll call you a cab when you're ready.

DUSTY:
And where do you think I can go?

LILY:
Wherever you need to.

DUSTY SHAKES HIS HEAD SADLY AND
WALKS AWAY.

SCENE: THE SNYDER FARMHOUSE PORCH

LUKE, NOAH, AND HOLDEN ARE OUT ON THE PORCH.

HOLDEN:
Well I'm going in. It's a bit chilly out
here for me.

LUKE:
Okay, Dad. See you later.

HOLDEN ENTERS THE FARMHOUSE.

NOAH TURNS TO LUKE:
It is a bit chilly. Aren't you cold?

LUKE SMILES AT NOAH:
How can I be cold when you're around?

NOAH CHUCKLES AND REACHES OUT FOR LUKE'S HAND.
LUKE GIVES IT TO HIM FREELY.

NOAH:
You can't really, cause I'd always
try to warm you up.

LUKE:
I know.

NOAH PAUSES THOUGHTFULLY, THEN SITS DOWN
LUKE SITS NEXT TO HIM AND LEANS AGAINST HIS BODY.

NOAH:
Luke...

LUKE:
Hmmm...?

NOAH:
I was hoping you could tell me...
what happened between you and Kevin?

LUKE LEANS AWAY FROM NOAH, LOOKING INTO HIS EYES.
NOAH LOOKS BACK.

<COMMERCIAL>

<FADE IN>

LUKE SMILES, ALMOST LAUGHING.

LUKE:
Are you jealous, Noah?

NOAH:
No... well yes, a little.
But you said it didn't work out.
When you came out to him,
he didn't even want to be your friend
anymore.

LUKE SIGHS:
Yeah... I don't really want
to talk about that.

NOAH LOOKS UP, SAD:
I guess it was a pretty painful time for
you.

LUKE (STARTING TO GET ANGRY):
I said I didn't want to talk about it.

NOAH IS SURPRISED:
Okay... sorry.

LUKE (CALMING DOWN AGAIN):
Okay... Sorry I snapped at you.

NOAH CHUCKLES:
You're sorry. I'm sorry.
We're both sorry.

LUKE LAUGHS QUIETLY THEN LEANS
BACK AGAINST NOAH. NOAH LETS GO OF
LUKE'S HAND AND WRAPS HIS ARM AROUND HIM.

<TRANSITION>

SCENE: DUSTY'S ROOM AT THE LAKEVIEW

ALL OF HIS BELONGINGS ARE PILED NEATLY ON
TOP OF THE BED.

DUSTY IS PACING BACK AND FORTH IN THE ROOM.

!KNOCK AT THE DOOR!

VOICE:
Mr. Donovan? Mrs. Snyder wanted me to remind you
that checkout is at three.

DUSTY:
Alright. Thanks.

VOICE:
You're welcome, sir.

DUSTY LOOKS AROUND THE ROOM,
GRABS A DECORATIVE OIL LAMP
AND EMPTIES ITS CONTENTS ONTO THE PILE
OF THINGS HE HAS ON THE BED.

THEN HE GRABS A PACKET OF MATCHES
FROM SOMEWHERE ELSE IN THE ROOM,
AND STRIKES ONE.
WITH A FLICK OF HIS WRIST, THE LIGHTED
MATCH FLIES ONTO THE PILE AND QUICKLY
SETS IT AFLAME.

DUSTY QUICKLY LEAVES THE ROOM.

SCENE: THE SNYDER FARMHOUSE PORCH

LUKE HAS FALLEN ASLEEP AGAINST NOAH.
NOAH IS UNAWARE OF IT,
STILL HOLDING HIM AGAINST HIS CHEST.

NOAH:
Luke?

LUKE (GROGGY):
Hmmm....?

NOAH LAUGHS:
Why don't you go to bed?

LUKE SMILES SLEEPILY:
You coming with me?

NOAH SMILES:
No. You're tired.

LUKE YAWNS.

LUKE:
Okay. Bed it is, then.
It just feels so early.

NOAH:
It is January.

NOAH GETS UP, PULLING LUKE WITH HIM.

NOAH:
Good night, sweet prince.

LUKE:
Shakespeare?

NOAH:
Well, what did you expect?
He is one of the greatest directors
that ever lived.

LUKE:
He was a writer.

NOAH BEGINS TO REFUTE HIM:
No, he – You're right.
He was a writer.
Now go to bed, before you fall
asleep standing up and get hurt.

LUKE:
Okay, I'm going.
Sure you don't want to spend the night?

NOAH:
I'll stay in the parlor again.

LUKE:
We have other rooms.

NOAH:
I know, but I kinda like it.

LUKE SMILES SLEEPILY:
Whatever.

LUKE ENTERS THE FARMHOUSE.

<FADE OUT>

<COMMERCIAL>

<FADE IN>

SCENE: THE LAKEVIEW LOBBY.

DUSTY IS SITTING IN THE FAR CORNER, OUT OF PLAIN SIGHT.
SUDDENLY THE ROOM IS FILLED WITH SIRENS.

LILY WALKS BY THE FRONT DESK:
Fire! There's a fire!

THE FRONT DESK CLERK LOOKS AT A COMPUTER SCREEN:
Room 120.

LILY:
Oh god, Dusty!
Get security over there now!

DESK CLERK:
They're already responding.

LILY:
Go see if they need help.
I'll stay here and man the desk.

DESK CLERK NODS AND LEAVES.

DUSTY STANDS UP CAREFULLY, WITH A DETERMINED LOOK ON HIS FACE.
HE BEGINS MOVING TOWARDS LILY.

<TRANSITION>

SCENE: THE SNYDER FARMHOUSE

HOLDEN IS SITTING WITH EMMA, NATALIE, AND ETHAN.

NOAH:
Where's Faith.

HOLDEN LOOKS UP:
She's still upstairs I think.

EMMA:
Come and get something to eat, Noah.
Luke said you were staying the night?

NOAH:
If that's alright with you, Mrs. Snyder.
I'll sleep in that cozy little parlor of yours
if you don't object.

EMMA CHUCKLES:
Oh thats fine, Noah.

NOAH:
Mr. Snyder... can I ask you something.?
It's about Luke.
I tried to ask him earlier, but
he didn't want to talk about
it. But the more
I think about it, the more
I think I need to know.

HOLDEN:
I can't promise I'll answer,
but you're free to ask.

NOAH:
What happened between Luke and Kevin?

HOLDEN SIGHS:
You're right that's something you
need to ask Luke. And I'm
not surprised that he won't
talk to you about it.
It was one of the most painful
parts of his life, and
one of the reasons I was so wary
with you.

HOLDEN GETS UP AND MOVES AWAY FROM THE
TABLE TAKING NOAH WITH HIM.

HOLDEN (QUIETLY):
I watched it happen to him.
I watched him fall in love with
that other boy, and then I
watched him tear himself up
over it, and then I watched
Kevin tear Luke up.

NOAH (angry):
Kevin hurt Luke?

HOLDEN:
Not physically, but yes.
He didn't even have to try hard,
just ripped his heart out and
stomped on it a few times.

<FADE IN>

SCENE: THE LAKEVIEW HOTEL LOBBY

DUSTY WAITS UNTIL LILY'S BACK IS TURNED TOWARD HIM,
THEN RUSHES FORWARD AND GRABS HER ELBOWS.

LILY:
Wha- Dusty?!!!
Let go of me, or I'll call security.

DUSTY:
Security is occupied at the moment.
You'll be coming with me.

LILY:
What?! No!!

DUSTY FORCES LILY AWAY FROM THE DESK.

LILY (CONT'D):
Someone help me.. please!

DUSTY:
It would be better for you if you came
quietly.

LILY:
You won't get away with this, Dusty!

LILY SCREAMS AGAIN:
Help!!!

DUSTY CLAPS A HAND OVER HER MOUTH,
STILL HOLDING HER ARMS TIGHTLY WITH HIS OTHER HAND.

LILY'S SCREAMS ARE MUFFLED BY HIS HAND.

<TRANSITION>

SCENE: THE SNYDER FARMHOUSE.

NOAH AND HOLDEN ARE STILL TALKING, AWAY FROM THE TABLE.
EMMA IS PLAYING WITH ETHAN AND NATALIE IN
THE BACKGROUND.

NOAH (DEEPLY CONCERNED):
My god, I had no idea.
No wonder.

HOLDEN:
No wonder what?

NOAH:
When I first met Luke,
I always wondered why he was
so quiet, always confused.
He walked around like a
kicked puppy.
I wondered why he never
wanted to be with anyone,
or tried to find someone
to love.

HOLDEN:
A kicked puppy?
God, I never thought of it that way.

NOAH:
He was, though.
I just didn't realize it.
I mean... it was kind of weird.
But now I understand why.

HOLDEN:
Why he was acting that way?

NOAH:
Why he didn't want
to be friends.
Why he didn't want
to be around me
until I practically forced him.

HOLDEN:
If you were able to heal
that part of him
that Kevin crushed, Noah...
We have more to thank you
for than we realized.

NOAH:
I don't think I have... not yet.

<FADE OUT>

<COMMERCIAL>

<FADE IN>

SCENE: OUTSIDE THE LAKEVIEW HOTEL.

DUSTY IS DRAGGING LILY ALONGSIDE HIM, STILL
COVERING HER MOUTH WITH ONE HAND.

DUSTY:
If you try to scream or say anything, Lily,
I'll snap this arm in half.

LILY'S EYES WIDEN IN SHOCK, BUT SHE NODS.
DUSTY REMOVES HIS HAND FROM HER MOUTH, AND HOLDS BOTH
HER ARMS AS HE MANEUVERS HER TOWARD HIS CAR.

HE OPENS HIS TRUNK AND PULLS OUT SOME ROPE. HE TIES
LILY'S HANDS VERY WELL, THEN FINDS SOMETHING TO GAG HER WITH.

DUSTY (IN A FURIOUS RAGE):
I'm not... going to let you.... jeopardize
everything... I've worked so hard to get.

DUSTY FORCES HER INTO THE PASSENGER SEAT OF THE CAR
 AND LOCKS THE DOOR. HE GETS INTO THE DRIVER'S SEAT
AND DRIVES OFF.

<FADE OUT>

Okay, I will admit that this one was difficult for me. I kept wanting to write longer scenes, but then realized that longer scenes would not fit in with the soap opera genre, so I had to keep putting in transitions and time flows. I fear this one is not one of my better ones. I was exhausted from my day job.

<FADE IN>

SCENE: OUTDOORS, A FORESTED COUNTRY HIGHWAY.
DUSTY STOPS THE CAR AT A STOP SIGN.

LILY, STILL GAGGED, SIGHS THROUGH HER NOSE.

DUSTY REACHES OVER AND UNTIES HER GAG.

LILY:
I can't believe I let you do this to me.
You didn't have a knife or a gun or anything!

DUSTY SHRUGS:
Guess I'm just pretty convincing.

LILY:
You're pretty insane. That's what you are.
So what's the plan? Or do you have one?

DUSTY REMAINS SILENT.

LILY:
Ah, I get the silent treatment. Brilliant.
But then again, its you. What else was I to
expect? You're the master of the silent treatment.

DUSTY REMAINS SILENT, ARCHES AN EYEBROW.

LILY:
Fine. Have it your way.

HOLDEN:
Oh hey. No, I haven't seen
Lily since she left this morning.
Have you tried her cell?

PAUSE

HOLDEN (CONT'D):
That's odd.
I know she said she was looking forward
to the meeting.
If you can't reach her on
the cell, call the Lakeview.

PAUSE

HOLDEN:
Okay, I'll talk to you later.

HOLDEN HANGS UP. NOAH LOOKS UP EXPECTANTLY.

NOAH:
Everything okay?

HOLDEN:
Well, it seems that Lily
didn't show up for that meeting at WOAK.

NOAH IS A LITTLE CRESTFALLEN:
Oh. Do you think she's alright?

HOLDEN:
Lily can take care of herself.

NOAH NODS CAREFULLY:
Okay.

HOLDEN LOOKS AROUND:
Is Luke still sleeping?

NOAH:
Yeah.

HOLDEN SHAKES HIS HEAD, SMILING:
Must be the weather.
It's so odd seeing you there by yourself.
I'm used to you two being together all the time.

NOAH NODS:
It's good to be apart sometimes, though.
Luke can be pretty intense.

HOLDEN (CHUCKLES):
Don't I know it.
He has a passion for all things dramatic.

NOAH:
I've been thinking about that a bit...
and what you told me
about Luke and Kevin.

LILY:
Alright, Dusty. This is enough!
Stop the car this instant!

DUSTY STOPS THE CAR.

LILY:
Untie me!

DUSTY:
Why?

LILY:
Because these ropes are really starting to burn.
You tied me too tightly!

DUSTY SIGHS:
Fine.

DUSTY LEANS OVER TO LOOSEN THE ROPES
AND LILY SUDDENLY YANKS HER ARMS OUT AND
GRABS HIS HEAD, SLAMMING IT
WITH FORCE AGAINST THE STEERING WHEEL.
DUSTY GRUNTS LOUDLY.

DUSTY:
Ahh, Lily!

LILY UNLOCKS THE DOOR AND
RUNS OUT OF THE CAR.
DUSTY GRABS AFTER HER BUT HE IS
TOO SLOW – DAZED BY THE BLOW.

DUSTY YELLS LOUDER:
Lily!!!

HE HOLDS HIS HEAD WHERE IT HIT THE STEERING WHEEL,
REELING FROM THE BLOW.

<TRANSITION>

SCENE: THE HOLDEN FARMHOUSE

HOLDEN WALKS OVER TO THE TABLE AND SITS BY NOAH:

HOLDEN:
I won't push you to do something
you don't want to do, Noah.
But if you can help Luke
in any way...

NOAH LOOKS AT HOLDEN SERIOUSLY:
Mr. Snyder, I really care about Luke.
If there's anything I can do to help
him, I'm going to.

HOLDEN SIGHS:
Thank you, Noah.
Thank you so much.
I – his mother and I -
we put Luke through a
lot. Sometimes I
think we hurt him
more than we knew.

NOAH:
Most of my childhood has been
uneventful, but I think
that's because my... dad
wanted to control everything I did.

NOAH PAUSES, SADDENED:
But what he did was the most harmful of all.
At least you gave Luke the freedom he
needed to be himself, even if it was hard at times.
For all of you.

HOLDEN:
I sometimes... sometimes
wish I knew if what I did
was the right thing to do.

NOAH:
If you did the best you could.
If you tried....
I don't think anybody could ask for more.

HOLDEN REACHES OUT AND GRASPS NOAH'S SHOULDER
FONDLY IN A PATERNAL MOVEMENT.
NOAH IS SURPRISED, BUT MOVED BY
THE DISPLAY OF AFFECTION.

HOLDEN:
Where were you, Noah, when we needed you most?

<FADE OUT>

LILY HAS RUN INTO THE SURROUNDING WOODS.

DUSTY:
Lily!!! Come back here. It's dangerous.

DUSTY WALKS UNSTEADILY AFTER LILY.

<TRANSITION>

SCENE: THE SNYDER FARMHOUSE

HOLDEN AND NOAH ARE STILL SITTING AT THE DINING TABLE.

NATALIE COMES DOWN THE STAIRS.

NATALIE:
Noah, want to play a game with me?

NOAH SMILES AT HER:
As long as it's not one of your sister's video games.

NATALIE LAUGHS.
No. It's dominoes!
We play it on the table and don't need a computer
or anything!

NOAH:
Sounds fun!

NATALIE BRINGS HER DOMINOES TO
THE TABLE AND NOAH LOOKS BACK
AT HOLDEN.
HOLDEN IS SMILING AT THE SCENE.

HOLDEN GETS OUT HIS CELL PHONE AND PRESSES A BUTTON.

<TRANSITION>

SCENE: THE LAKEVIEW LOBBY

LILY'S PURSE WAS LEFT AT
THE FRONT DESK. IT BEGINS
TO RING.

<TRANSITION>

SCENE: THE SNYDER FARMHOUSE.

HOLDEN:
Come on, Lily, pick up!

PAUSE

HOLDEN (CONT'D):
Hey Lily, Its Holden.
Call me back when you get this message.

NOAH LOOKS UP FROM THE GAME TO HOLDEN:
No luck?

HOLDEN SHAKES HIS HEAD WITH A WORRIED LOOK.

<FADE OUT>

<COMMERCIAL>

<FADE IN>

SCENE: OUTSIDE. A FOREST, A COUNTRY HIGHWAY NEARBY.

LILY IS RUSHING THROUGH THE WOODS IN
HER BARE FEET, CARRYING HER HIGH-HEELED
SHOES IN HER HAND.

DUSTY IS CHASING HER, STILL GRIPPING HIS HEAD.

DUSTY:
Lily! Come back here!

LILY DOESN'T RESPOND, BUT CONTINUES TO RUN.

A CAR SPEEDS DOWN THE HIGHWAY AND LILY
RUNS OUT TO FLAG THEM DOWN.

DUSTY:
Lily, don't!

THE CAR PULLS TO A STOP. A STRANGER GETS OUT.

STRANGER:
Something wrong, ma'am?

LILY (GASPING FOR BREATH):
A man... tried...
to kidnap me.
Chasing.

STRANGER LOOKS UP AND SEES DUSTY.

DUSTY:
Oh dear girl.
She's confused.
Got hit in the head.

DUSTY RUBS HIS HEAD.

DUSTY (CONT'D):
We both did.
Had a little accident
down the road a bit.

DUSTY RUNS UP AND EMBRACES LILY
WITH A STEEL IRON GRIP.
LILY STRUGGLES AGAINST HIM.

DUSTY:
Oh, darling. It's over.
We're safe now.

STRANGER:
Maybe we should call the police,
see if she's alright.

DUSTY:
I'll take her to the hospital.

LILY:
No! He's not-
We're not-
He tried to kidnap me!
My name is Lily Snyder.
Get my husband Holden Snyder.
I don't want to go with this man.

DUSTY:
Lily, you're confused right
now from your injury.
But you'll be alright.
We need to get you
to a hospital.

STRANGER IS CONFUSED, TORN:
Sir, maybe you should
leave the lady alone for now.
We'll get the police and an ambulance.

STRANGER PULLS OUT HIS CELLPHONE.

<TRANSITION>

SCENE: THE SNYDER FARMHOUSE.

NOAH AND NATALIE ARE PLAYING AT THE DINING TABLE.
HOLDEN IS LOOKING OUT THE WINDOW, HOLDING
A MUG OF COFFEE.

NOAH:
I think it'll be alright, D- Mr. Snyder.

LUKE COMES DOWN THE STAIRS, OVERHEARING NOAH'S
LAST SENTENCE.

LUKE:
What will be alright?

HOLDEN:
Oh your mother's gone missing again.
She missed the meeting at WOAK this afternoon.

LUKE:
Oh no.. Noah, she was going to get you that
director's assistant job.

NOAH:
That's okay, Luke. I'm sure it'll still be there tomorrow.
I only hope your mom is alright.

LUKE:
Dad, do you think she's with Dusty again?

HOLDEN STIFFENS AT DUSTY'S NAME.

<FADE OUT>

<COMMERCIAL>

<FADE IN>

HOLDEN:
I don't know.
I don't think she would just
not go to a meeting.
And she didn't answer her phone at all.

NATALIE:
Did something happen to mom?

NOAH TRIES TO REASSURE NATALIE:
I think she just got stuck in traffic.
We'll know where she is in a bit when she calls us.

LUKE SMILES AT THE EXCHANGE, RUFFLES NATALIE'S HAIR.

LUKE LOOKS AROUND:
Faith is hiding somewhere?

HOLDEN:
She hasn't come down since breakfast.

LUKE SITS DOWN, WORRIED.
That's not like her.
What's going on, Dad?

HOLDEN:
I only wish I knew.

LUKE:
Well as long as the rest of my family doesn't disappear
while I'm sitting here, I won't be
completely freaked out.
There's probably a good explanation for
everything.

HOLDEN:
And that's the second thing I wish for.

         I have been reading too David.  You are doing a fantastic job.  I think it all makes sense, but I wish
the real scripts would be more like yours.  This Lili Dusty thing gets on my nerves.

         Keep up the good work.

Wow, that's a powerful endorsement... You're saying you like my storyline better than the real one?

That's about 140 pages total, so far.... will probably reach 200 here in no time.

“AS THE WORLD TURNS”

TELEPLAY

<FADE IN>

SCENE: OUTSIDE, A COUNTRY ROAD

LILY AND DUSTY ARE WAITING WITH A STRANGER
FOR THE POLICE TO ARRIVE. DUSTY IS PACING, NERVOUS.

A PLAIN CAR DRIVES UP, A LIGHT FLASHING ON THE
DASHBOARD. THE CAR STOPS AND MARGO STEPS OUT.

MARGO:
Lily, thank God you're alright!

LILY:
No thanks to this cretin here!

MARGO:
Who, Dusty?

LILY:
Who else would have the guts to do this?

MARGO PUTS HER ARMS OVER HER CHEST:
What's Dusty done this time?

LILY:
He tried to kidnap me!!!

DUSTY:
No I didn't... It was all a misunderstanding.

LILY:
A misunderstanding? Dusty,
you threatened to break my arm
if I didn't remain quiet and
then you tied me up and
gagged me when we got to the car!

MARGO (WHISTLES):
Yep, that's a kidnapping.

<FADE OUT>

<OPENING TITLES>

<COMMERCIAL>

<FADE IN>

SCENE: THE OAKDALE POLICE STATION

MARGO BRINGS DUSTY IN, WITH HANDCUFFS ON.

MARGO:
Look who's back in town, boys!

DUSTY:
Alright, that's enough humiliation,
don't you think?

MARGO SHRUGS:
Fine.

LILY ENTERS.

MARGO TURNS BACK.

MARGO:
Okay, Lily. We just need your statement.
Then you can go. Donovan, on the other
hand is going to be staying with us for
a while.

DUSTY SIGHS.

LILY:
Alright. Give me the papers.
And someone call my husband,
he'll want to know where I am.

MARGO NODS.

<TRANSITION>

SCENE: THE SNYDER FARMHOUSE

LUKE, NOAH, AND HOLDEN ARE ALL PLAYING WITH NATALIE
AT THE DINING ROOM TABLE. EMMA IS FEEDING ETHAN.

EMMA:
I hope everyone enjoyed dinner.

NOAH:
Yes, ma'am. It was great, as always.

LUKE GRINS:
Grandma is the best cook in the world.

NOAH:
I don't think I can argue with that.

HOLDEN'S CELLPHONE RINGS.
HE PICKS UP.

HOLDEN:
Hello?

MARGO:
Holden! We've found Lily.

HOLDEN:
She's okay?

MARGO:
She's a little mad with Dusty right now,
but otherwise seems to be good.

HOLDEN:
And where's Dusty?

MARGO:
We're booking him for kidnapping.

HOLDEN:
Wha- what? Dusty kidnapped... Lily?!

NOAH, LUKE, NATALIE, AND EMMA STOP WHAT
THEY'RE DOING AND LOOK UP AT HOLDEN.

MARGO:
That's the charge. Lily's making
her statement now.
I think with what we know about
what happened at the Lakeview,
we've got a strong case against
him.

HOLDEN:
Okay. I'll be there to pick Lily up
in a bit.

HOLDEN HANGS UP.

MARGO HANGS UP AND TURNS TO LILY:
Holden's on his way.

<FADE OUT>

<COMMERCIAL>

<FADE IN>

SCENE: THE OAKDALE POLICE STATION

LILY IS SITTING IN A WAITING AREA.

HOLDEN ENTERS, ANXIOUS.

HE SEES LILY:
Lily, are you alright?!
Did he hurt you?

LILY:
No, I'm fine.
I need to go back to
the Lakeview and pick up my things though.

HOLDEN:
I'll take you there.

HOLDEN TURNS TO MARGO:
Is Dusty already locked up?

MARGO:
Not yet, he's in there.

MARGO POINTS TO AN AREA WITH A DESK
WHERE DUSTY IS SITTING IN A CHAIR,
TALKING TO AN OFFICER – STILL IN HANDCUFFS.
WITHOUT PAUSING OR WAITING FOR PERMISSION
HOLDEN BARGES INTO THE OFFICE AND
PUNCHES DUSTY IN THE MOUTH.
DUSTY GRUNTS AND COLLAPSES AGAINST THE CHAIR.
HE GETS UP SLOWLY AND LOOKS AT HOLDEN:

DUSTY:
Are you through now?

HOLDEN:
Hell, no! Just getting started.

BUT DESPITE HIS ROUGH WORDS, HOLDEN
IS NURSING HIS HAND.

MARGO PUTS A HAND ON HIS SHOULDER AND URGES HIM OUT:
We've got it from here, Holden.
You and Lily get out of here. Go home.

HOLDEN NODS CURTLY AND LEAVES WITH LILY.

<TRANSITION>

SCENE: THE SNYDER FARMHOUSE.

LUKE, NATALIE, AND NOAH ARE STILL PLAYING THE GAME.
EMMA GETS UP WITH A SLEEPING ETHAN AND
TAKES HIM UPSTAIRS.

LUKE PRETENDS TO GROAN IN DEFEAT:
Ohh, and Natalie wins again.

NATALIE LOOKS UP, SMILING:
Yeah, but Noah got really close.

LUKE LOOKS UP TO NOAH, FLIRTING:
I happen to like it when he gets really close.

NOAH SMILES BACK AT LUKE, BUT IS SUDDENLY
OVERCOME WITH A MORE SOMBER THOUGHT.
LUKE NOTICES THE CHANGE IN EXPRESSION.

LUKE:
Is something wrong?

NOAH:
Ummm... I need to talk to you out
on the porch.

LUKE (CONCERNED):
Okay.

NOAH SMILES AT NATALIE:
It was a fun game, Natalie.
Ask me again whenever you want to play.

NATALIE SMILES:
Okay.

LUKE RUFFLES NATALIE'S HAIR AFFECTIONATELY:
Go see if you can help Grandma.

LUKE CROUCHES DOWN TO NATALIES LEVEL (CONT'D):
But be very quiet, she's still putting Ethan to sleep.

NATALIE SMILES AND NODS, TAKING HER DOMINOES
UP THE STEPS WITH HER WHEN SHE EXITS.
NOAH MAKES HIS WAY TO THE DOOR AND LOOKS BACK
AT LUKE, WHO IS LOOKING AT HIM WITH
A PAINFUL EXPRESSION.

<FADE OUT>

<COMMERCIAL>

<FADE IN>

SCENE: THE SNYDER FARMHOUSE PORCH

NOAH TAKES LUKE'S HAND GENTLY AND PULLS HIM INTO HIS ARMS.
THEY KISS BRIEFLY THEN JUST RUB THEIR FOREHEADS TOGETHER.

NOAH (CONCERNED):
Luke, I need to ask you something,
and I need you to answer truthfully,
and I want you to know that whatever
you tell me, I'll still be here.
I'm not going to run away from you,
or stop caring for you, or
try to hurt you in any way.

LUKE SIGHS:
What do you need to know?

NOAH:
What happened between
you and Kevin?

LUKE TAKES A RAGGED BREATH
AND WRAPS HIS ARMS AROUND NOAH TIGHTER:
Nothing happened, Noah.
He didn't.... want to be with me.

NOAH SIGHS, KISSES LUKE'S FOREHEAD:
That's what I mean.
I want you to tell me what
happened.

LUKE'S BREATH BECOMES SHARPER AND MORE PAINED.
LUKE WHISPERS:
What... what do you want to know?

NOAH SIGHS, CLOSING HIS EYES AND WINCING
AS HE BECOMES MORE AWARE OF LUKE'S PAIN.

NOAH:
Everything.
How you fell in love with him.
What he did when you came out to him.

PAUSE.

NOAH (CONT'D):
And what you were feeling
when all this was going on.

LUKE SPASMS FOR A SECOND, AND NOAH HOLDS HIM.

LUKE TRIES TO PULL AWAY, TEARS IN HIS EYES.

LUKE:
I can't do that, Noah.

NOAH:
Yes you can, Luke.
I know you can.
You have a way with words
that goes beyond anything that I've ever seen.
You can express things
that I've only barely known I was experiencing.
I...

NOAH TAKES A BREATH AND TRIES TO PULL LUKE BACK
INTO HIS ARMS:
If anyone can tell me this, Luke, its you.
And no one else.

LUKE TRIES TO PULL AWAY AGAIN:
Alright, I can. I just choose not to.

NOAH IS STUBBORN AND WON'T LET HIM GO:
Then we'll just have to stay out here until you do.

LUKE LOOKS AT NOAH, WONDERING IF HE'S SERIOUS:
But... it'll get cold.

NOAH (SOFTLY):
That's what I'm here for, remember?

<FADE OUT>

<COMMERCIAL>

<FADE IN>

LUKE'S BREATHING GROWS SHARPER AND SHORTER,
AS THOUGH HE IS STARTING TO HYPERVENTILATE:

NOAH SWALLOWS GUILTILY AND WITH A SWIFT MOTION PULLS
LUKE BACK AGAINST HIM. HE BREATHES SLOWLY AND
STEADILY AND CRADLES LUKE AGAINST HIM UNTIL LUKE'S
BREATH MATCHES HIS AGAIN.

LUKE (MISERABLE):
Why... why do you want to know, Noah?
Do you take some special pleasure in torturing me?

NOAH PAUSES, UNCERTAINTY PLAYS ACROSS HIS FACE:
I'll tell you why I want to know after you've told me.

LUKE CRUMBLES AGAINST NOAH,
NOW REALIZING WHAT HE'S UP AGAINST.

LUKE:
I don't-don't want our relationship
to be like this, Noah.

NOAH SIGHS SADLY:
Neither do I, Luke... That's why I'm getting this
out of the way.

LUKE:
I need – I need to sit down.

NOAH:
Fine, but I'm not letting you go
until you tell me.

LUKE (SAD AND ANGRY):
How many contingencies are you making here?

NOAH:
As many as I need to.

 <FADE OUT>

<COMMERCIAL>

<FADE IN>

NOAH AND LUKE ARE SITTING ON THE SOFA,
LUKE STILL IN NOAH'S ARMS.

NOAH SIGHS:
Can you at least tell me why you don't want
to talk about it.

LUKE:
Because it... it...
Noah, it's personal.

NOAH SHAKES HIS HEAD:
Luke, that's not it!
There's something else going on here.
Something you're afraid to tell me.

LUKE REMAINS SILENT.

NOAH TAKES A BREATH:
What are you afraid I'll do?

LUKE TAKES ANOTHER RAGGED BREATH,
HOLDING HIS TEARS BACK.

LUKE:
I-I don't know.

NOAH:
But you are afraid of something, right?

LILY AND HOLDEN WALK UP TO THE PORCH FROM OUTSIDE,
OVERHEARING THE NEXT PART OF THE EXCHANGE.

LUKE (GETTING ANGRY):
I don't know!
You keep asking me the same
questions over and over again,
as though I'm going to have a different answer.

NOAH:
Luke, you do have a different answer.
You just won't let it come out.

LILY BEGINS TO OPEN HER MOUTH
BUT HOLDEN REACHES OUT AND GRABS HER ARM.
SHE STOPS, WITH A QUIZZICAL GLANCE AT HOLDEN.

HOLDEN WHISPERS:
Let this play out.

LILY WHISPERS BACK:
But Noah's hurting him.

HOLDEN SHRUGS AND WHISPERS:
Sometimes pain is a good thing to face.

LILY LOOKS UP AND REALIZES HOLDEN IS RIGHT.

LILY AND HOLDEN WALK UP TO THE PORCH DOOR AND
STEP IN.

HOLDEN:
Oh, Luke and Noah. I see you two
lovebirds are back in your favorite place.

LUKE GLARES AT HOLDEN BUT DOESN'T SAY
ANYTHING.

LILY TURNS TO HOLDEN:
I'll just grab Ethan and the girls and head
back home. Good night, Luke, Noah. Sorry
I didn't get to WOAK today. I'll stop by
tomorrow and see about that job for you.

NOAH:
That's alright, Mrs. Snyder.
I'm just relieved to see you unharmed.

LUKE:
Can I come in with you guys?

HOLDEN:
Why don't you stay out here a bit more? It's a nice night for it.

NOAH:
It may be a while before we're in.

HOLDEN NODS:
We'll leave the lights on for you.

<FADE OUT>
