Hi Brokies,

I'm a member of an English Conversation Circle and today we did a quiz together. However, we didn't know all answers and I was the one who was assigned to look up the answers we didn't know. I did internet research, but three questions remain unsolved. Now I hope for your help  :).

David (Indiana) might know the answer to the first question, but of course everybody is welcome who knows the answer:

1) Which Indian tribe was the only one to win a war against the United States?

a - the Algonquin
b - the Navajo
c - the Sioux

I think the question might refer to the battle of Little Big Horn, thus Sioux might be the correct answer. However, this was a battle, not a whole war. And it was a Pyrric Victory. So, is there anything else they might refer to?

The second question might be easiest for the Brits on the board, but again, everone who knows it is welcome to share their knowledge  ;D

2) The castles in Wales were built mainly by ...

a - the Welsh
b - the Vikings
c - the English

I can exclude the Vikings, but ...  ???

In the third question, I have to relate quotes to American humorists.

Which American humorist said which of the following quotes?

Humorists: Bill Bryson - Ellen DeGeneres - Garrison Keillor - Will Rogers

a - "It's easy being a humorist when you've got the whole government working for you."
b - "I come from Des Moines. Somebody had to."
c - "When we are feeling suffering, we come alive in ways we do not feel when we are on vacation in   Florida."
d - "My grandmother started walking five miles a day when she was 60. She's 97 now, and we don't know where the hell she is."

Quote number b must be by Bill Bryson, because he's the only one out of the four who is from Des Moines.

For the others I have guesses, but am not sure:

a = Ellen
c = Garrison Keillor
d = Will Rogers

Now it's your turn, Brokies  :). Pretty please  :-*

As for the quotes,

a) Will Rogers

b) Bill Bryson -- you're right on that one.

c) Garrison Keillor -- right again.

d) Ellen DeGeneres

For the humorists,

I would guess Ellen is d....

I would think Will Rogers was a or b, but don't know for sure...

Little Big Horn was a confederation of Tribes, Led by Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse among others.

The Navajo just had a tragedy rather like the Cheyenne.  So sad.

In the late 1860s the Sioux under Red Cloud succeeded in getting the U.S. Army to withdraw from the Powder River region of eastern Wyoming, east of the Big Horns, and close the Bozeman Trail to Montana. Maybe that's what this question refers to?

(I made particular note of when we crossed the Powder River on the Road Trip. Here in Pennsylvania we'd call it a creek. ...  ::) )

Hi Chrissi!

I think Jeff is correct. I know the people of my tribe also often talk about Sitting Bull's war declaration on the white man: " We are an island of Indians in a lake of whites... These soldiers want war. All right, we'll give it to them". Soon after, a force of Sioux and Cheyenne defeated General George Crook and his troops in the battle of the Rosebud (1876) in southern Montana. About a week later Custer led a force against the Indians and neither Custer nor a single soldier in Custer's command survived this battle at the Little Bighorn river.

To my understanding these were a series of uprisings, so I'm not sure if this is the answer you are looking for. I'll try calling my friend Rodney who is in charge of Circle of the People, a NA group I belong to. Perhaps he will know the answer for certain. :)

Thank you Lee  :-* (I remember this pic)

and Jeff  :-* (I should have known you might be another one to ask, besides David. I do know you're historically skilled; and I remember you 'n me talking about Boozeman trail last year proir to the BBQ/WY trip  :))

and David  :-* (no need to call your friend. What you , Janice and Jeff have said is enough verification to me. And it's not an important test for class or anything.)

It's great to have friends around the world. There were also some questions about Australia, and it's cool to think that I just could have asked one of our down under Brokies if I hadn't known the answers myself.
