Remembering Doctor King

"I HAVE A DREAM.."

Years ago in school, in English class, our teacher gave us the text (not the entire text) with gaps in it. We had to fill in the missing words and then learn it by heart.

I hadn't hear/read that whole part before. I knew about "I have a dream.." but that was it.

I kept that text in my purse for a long time until it desintegrated.

I'm just reminded that I heard a programme on the radio about Martin Luther King a while ago.

It's a bit blurry, but I seem to remember that in the famous 'I have a dream' speach, he also talked about going up a mountain...?
I know I did think about BBM when I heard it, but it's a while ago and I've forgotten the details.


Anyone know anything about this?

In reply #3 on this very thread, you can hear the 'I Have a Dream' speech as it has been 'you tubed'.

In the original post of this very thread, the "Mountain Top" speech has also been 'you tubed', and it's a 1968 speech, apparently his last.

This morning on NPR I heard a piece about the last speech made by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on this day 40 years ago. It is known as "The Mountain Top Speech" because he involked the image of Moses, having lead his people to the promised land, his mission competed, he would not enter it with them. He was speaking in Memphis, the city were Elvis resided with his wife and baby daughter. Dr. King had come to Memphis to lend a hand to the sanitation workers who were on strike against the city.

The following morning, Dr. King was assassinated on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel. The course of history in the U.S. changed that day. I do not remember the assassination, but I do remember the riots that took place for me on a black and white TV screen. It seemed like they went on for years.

Listen now to the words of this great man and remember the difficult paths he and many others have trod to make this world a better place for all people.

Listened now, it's almost uncanny.

He's talking as if he knew he wasn't gonna live long.
And he was right; he was murdered the next day....  


(I'm sure this is all well known by Americans, but this speech is new to me.)
