There's a one-shot fanfic that had a very powerful impact on me when I read it, and I doubt there are many readers who don't identify with it in one way or another: it's an AU fic called "The Crossing."
In this story, Ennis and Jack have been together for more than 30 years, and Ennis has to take care of Jack in his last days. Very sad, but I thought it also had a very sweet ending.
