Wednesday 9 June 2010http://www.starobserver.com.au/news/2010/06/09/bake-off-a-taste-sensation/26444The 2010 Bobby Goldsmith Foundation (BGF) Bake-Off, held last Sunday at Paddington Town Hall in Sydney, was a resounding triumph.
The winner of this year’s Best In Show prize was “Mac A What?” by Carlos Heng, which also took out the best fete baking prize: Heng’s basket of macaroons was fashioned to look like a bird’s nest (see top).
His efforts looked and tasted so good the judges at first assumed he had professional training — but, as he explained, he had never even attempted to make macaroons before. Judge and resident culinary queen Claire de Lune declared Heng’s entry one of the best she’d ever tasted.
Trevor Ashley hosted a lively cake auction, with the highest winning bid going to Glen Lewis, aka Miss 3D, the winner of the Best Cake (Professional) category.
It’s a CAKE she’s eating!!! Lewis’ spectacular Gaga McQueen Pop Monster delicacy fetched $4000. Dawn Hough’s cake Oh Man!, which came second in the Best Cake (Professional) category, also created a fierce bidding war, with a winning bid of $3500.
Early estimates put the total amount raised at between $30,000-$35,000, with the proceeds going towards improving the quality of life for people living with HIV.
The winner of the Best Cake award, sponsored by Sydney Star Observer, was the Carrot, Pecan and Thong Delight made by drag queen Joyce Maynge.
