I hope (in some very, very, very distant year) that Rich will have a similar encounter.

Yes.

Fritz, that story is an excellent find.  I think it would be wonderful if one of the people closest to Gene sent it to him.  I'm going to look up the hymn.  I wonder if it would be good ar the funeral.

I wonder whether by "Climbing to Zion" he actually meant this:

"Marching to Zion"
Words: Isaac Watts
Music: Robert Lowery

Come, we that love the Lord,
And let our joys be known;
Join in a song with sweet accord,
Join in a song with sweet accord
And thus surround the throne,
And thus surround the throne.

Refrain

We’re marching to Zion,
Beautiful, beautiful Zion;
We’re marching upward to Zion,
The beautiful city of God.

The sorrows of the mind
Be banished from the place;
Religion never was designed
Religion never was designed,
To make our pleasures less,
To make our pleasures less.

Refrain

Let those refuse to sing,
Who never knew our God;
But favorites of the heavenly King,
But favorites of the heavenly King
May speak their joys abroad,
May speak their joys abroad.

Refrain

The God that rules on high,
And thunders when He please,
Who rides upon the stormy sky,
Who rides upon the stormy sky,
And manages the seas,
And manages the seas.

Refrain

This awful God is ours,
Our Father and our Love;
He will send down his heav’nly powers,
He will send down his heav’nly powers,
To carry us above,
To carry us above.

Refrain

There we shall see His face,
And never, never sin!
There, from the rivers of His grace,
There, from the rivers of His grace,
Drink endless pleasures in,
Drink endless pleasures in.

Refrain

Yea, and before we rise,
To that immortal state,
The thoughts of such amazing bliss,
The thoughts of such amazing bliss,
Should constant joys create,
Should constant joys create.

Refrain

The men of grace have found,
Glory begun below.
Celestial fruits on earthly ground
Celestial fruits on earthly ground
From faith and hope may grow,
From faith and hope may grow.

Refrain

The hill of Zion yields
A thousand sacred sweets
Before we reach the heav’nly fields,
Before we reach the heav’nly fields,
Or walk the golden streets,
Or walk the golden streets.

Refrain

Then let our songs abound,
And every tear be dry;
We’re marching through Immanuel’s ground,
We’re marching through Immanuel’s ground,
To fairer worlds on high,
To fairer worlds on high.

Refrain

This is an old, old Evangelical favorite. The words were written by Isaac Watts in 1707 and the music by Robert Lowery in 1867. We sing it a couple times a year even in my moderately high church Episcopal parish. The Episcopal hymnal doesn't include all the stanzas. You can find the words and also listen to the music at http://www.cyberhymnal.org.

hi everyone,
i have been on here and reading this thread for the past few days and wanting to contribute, but there really isn't much that i can add to all  the heartfelt messages everyone has already posted. they were very moving and touching.
i had met rich twice, in sf and again in nyc. i didn't know him very well but i know alot of people who really loved him so i know he was a wonderful man. he had everything going for him, a beautiful daughter that he adored, a life partner who was the love of his life  and a new business. there is just no sense to this.  so many people are going to miss him. this should not have happened. like mandi said, it just makes you want to hit a wall.
and fiona, i know we don't know each other, but what you wrote about the threads was absolutely beautiful and made me cry.
and eric, i am so happy for you and  mike, congratulations!!!! you deserve it.
and ted, enjoy your new life with jari. you deserve the best.
to everyone here , i give you my deepest sympathies and condolences. he is going to be so missed.
love,
teresa

Hello BetterMostains.

I have the street address for where the memorial will be for Rich.

It's Saturday at 3:00 PM.  It will be held in a vacant Assisted Living Facility.

50 Tanglewood Drive
Dawsonville, Ga.  30534.

The way it was explained to me, this is a "new" road, and is untested as to whether or not it will show up with GSP, GPS, whatever the correct initials are.

The address is found using MapQuest, so you have that alternative.

Tell him when l come up to him and ask to play the record, l'm gonna say: ''Voulez-vous jouer ce disque?''
'Voulez-vous, will you kiss my dick?'
Will you play my record? One-track mind!

I spoke with Rich's mother, she said she hopes as many of us can come as possible, and she said for those of us attending to "put on our thinking caps" and remember the funniest story you have involving Rich, to share. It is meant to be a celebration of him and his life and not something gloomy and depressing.

If any of you who cannot attend would like for me to read something from you, I will be happy to do that, please send it to me in a pm by Saturday morning.

I learned of Rich's passing late Saturday, the day of my father's funeral.  (My father was 91. For years now, I had been dreading "the call", and it finally came early Wednesday morning.  But even when death is expected, it is still hard.)  I wish that Rich had been able to reach age 91, too, and my heart aches for Gene and the boys, for his beloved Elizabeth, and for his many, many friends.  I like the idea of a scholarship fund for Elizabeth, and I will honor Rich's memory by contributing to that.

May Rich's memory be a blessing forever.
