Looking for some cuteness?

Gay animation In A Heartbeat has been uploaded in full on YouTube after we all cooed over the first trailer earlier this year.  The project has been created by filmmakers Esteban Bravo and Beth David, who raised over $14,000 on Kickstarter to fund the film.

“A closeted boy runs the risk of being outed by his own heart after it pops out of his chest to chase down the boy of his dreams,” an official description reads.

You can watch the adorable short in full (4 minutes in length) below.

Animated film about a gay boy’s crush is so cute it hurts
By Dan Tracer
May 23, 2017 at 1:05pm

Prepare to have your heartstrings tugged.

Children’s entertainment has made some modest strides in breaking free of outdated gender roles, but there’s still a huge void in queer representation aimed at a family-friendly crowd.

A new animated film is setting out to change that, and the recently-released trailer is causing hearts to melt across the web.

In A Heartbeat  was created by Beth David and Esteban Bravo, two animation students at the Ringling College of Art and Design in Florida. It tells the story of a closeted boy who “runs the risk of being outed by his own heart after it pops out of his chest to chase down the boy of his dreams.”

As if that short synopsis wasn’t enough to send a shiver down your spine, here’s the trailer to seal the deal:

“We want to put out a message of love and self acceptance to all the kids and young people who struggle to identify as LGBT+ just like Sherwin does,” David said.

The film, partly funded via a 2016 viral Kickstarter campaign, is set to be released for free online this summer.

Judging by this reaction on Twitter, it’ll make quite the impression:

Thank you for visiting our Kickstarter!

We're a team of two senior Computer Animation majors at Ringling College of Art + Design, and we're mid-production on our thesis film, "In a Heartbeat!" This film is not only a culmination of our four years of education and hard work at the college, but also an expression of a subject that has not been explored in computer animation. It’s a film that deals with a real and personal topic in a very sweet and lighthearted way and we are so excited to be able to share it with you!

We are so grateful for any contribution you can make, be it a donation or simply sharing the project and spreading the word! As tokens of our gratitude, we've assembled exciting packages of rewards including stickers, t-shirts, custom Heart plushies by SquishyHappies, artwork by the film's creators, and more!

THESE YOUNG ANIMATORS MADE THE
LGBT ANIMATED SHORT THAT'S MELTING
HEARTS EVERYWHERE

RECENT GRADS BETH DAVID AND ESTEBAN BRAVO CALL THE RESPONSE TO THEIR
HEARTWARMING FILM 'MIND-BLOWING'

by CRYSTAL BELL
08/01/2017

Over the past 24 hours, the sweet story of In a Heartbeat  has set hearts around the world aflutter. The animated short, directed by Beth David and Esteban Bravo at the Ringling College of Art and Design, hit the internet on Monday (July 31), and it's already inspired countless pieces of fan art and impassioned appeals for a follow-up feature.

David and Bravo call the overwhelming response to their short film "mind-blowing." Speaking to MTV News, David said she couldn't believe how many people had seen it already. (The film has already racked up over 2.6 million views and counting.) "There's fan art, and people are cosplaying it," David said. "They're sending us GIFs and edits. That's crazy! We're blown away, and it's so exciting."

"As artists, that's when you know you've made something cool — when other artists draw your art," Bravo added.

In a Heartbeat  follows a closeted boy named Sherwin whose heart literally pops out of his chest to chase after the boy of his dreams, Jonathan. At the risk of being outed by his own heart, Sherwin must track down his heart before it reveals to his crush how he really feels. There's no dialogue in the four-minute short, but that doesn't matter. The raw emotion of Sherwin's struggle bursts off the screen.

The LGBT+ love story was created by David and Bravo for their senior thesis project at Ringling. It started, as all films do, with an idea: a boy's heart pops out his chest and chases down a schoolyard crush. They started pre-production their junior year in January 2016, and at the time, the boy's crush was originally conceived as a girl, but a decision was made very early in development to make the object of his heart's desire a male classmate. David and Bravo both felt a deeply personal connection to the idea.

"It was very important for both of us," David said. "It resonated with us very personally. We always say to each other that it's the kind of thing we wish we had when we were kids, something positive we wish we could have seen on screen."

"The moment that it turned into two boys, I completely changed my emotional response to the film," Bravo added. "When we were trying to write the story of the film, I would hear myself get emotional."

From there, the characters of Sherwin and Jonathan were born. Throughout the year-and-a-half-long production on In a Heartbeat,  David and Bravo split the work evenly, each taking the lead on animating individual sequences. When it came time to create their character rigs, David took control of redheaded Sherwin, while Bravo focused on Jonathan. "We worked alongside each other all the way, from beginning to end," Bravo said. "It was as collaborative as it could be."

As per Ringling tradition, David and Bravo created parody movie posters for the film. Beth David and Esteban Bravo

They launched an extremely successful Kickstarter campaign late last year, raising over $14,000, despite an initial goal of only $3,000. David and Bravo used the money to hire composer Arturo Cardelús, who created a lovely original score for the film, and sound designer Nick Ainsworth. Since the short has no dialogue, Cardelús's score is especially powerful. It's part of what makes Sherwin's story so universally understood — and felt.

"It's more impactful because it's about how the characters are acting, rather than what they're saying," David said. "In the films that we watch, we've always enjoyed that quality, and we were striving to do something like that from the beginning."

With its simple yet effective message of inclusion, it's easy to see why Sherwin and Jonathan's tender story has captured the hearts and imaginations of people around the globe. First love can be scary, but when you're a young person also grappling with sexual identity, it's even more confusing. The Human Rights Campaign even encouraged followers to watch the short, tweeting a link to the film with the caption, "We can all relate to this." The film is also a semi-finalist for the 2017 Student Academy Awards.

[By the way--
do you know
who THIS  is??
HA!!!!!)

"There's fan art, and people are cosplaying it," Beth David said. "They're sending us GIFs and edits. That's crazy! We're blown away, and it's so exciting."

"A lot of people have been yearning to see this kind of relationship portrayed not only in media but in animation," Bravo said. "People are very excited, and a lot of LGBT people who needed this kind of representation finally see themselves represented, and that inspires them."

Having just graduated this past spring, David and Bravo are both pursuing careers in animation. Bravo is currently an intern at Blue Sky Studios, while David is an animator for JibJab's StoryBots series. But they both plan to continue their partnership and create more content together. As for whether they have plan to continue Sherwin and Jonathan's story, Bravo said that while there's nothing official to announce yet, he and David have talked about the possibility of revisiting these characters and expanding their stories.

"The response [to In a Heartbeat ] is just another reason why we need to keep on working together to tell these kinds of stories."

National
Crowd-funded animated short
about gay love goes viral

LOS ANGELES — An animated short film about an adolescent gay couple has gone viral, roughly 8 million views on YouTube in just two days.

“In a Heartbeat” follows an elementary school boy addressing his sexuality after falling in love with a male classmate. Filmmakers Beth David and Esteban Bravo released the film Monday online.

The short quickly began trending, gaining a particular following amongst LGBT advocates including singer Adam Lambert and actor Ashton Kutcher. The Human Rights Campaign posted the video on Twitter Tuesday afternoon and praised the film for its relatability.

Hayley Miller, the organization’s senior digital media manager, said the film is a testament to saying, “Love is love.”

“We’ve all had a crush or a broken heart,” Miller wrote in an email. “Using no words, it validates this young boy’s experience and the way all LGBTQ youth should be embraced.”

The filmmakers launched a Kickstarter campaign in November 2016 to fund the project, reaching the initial goal of $3,000 in three hours. A total of $14,000 was raised.

“In a Heartbeat” is a semi-finalist for best animated domestic film at the 2017 Student Academy Awards. The filmmakers produced the short at Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida as their senior thesis. They did not respond to online messages seeking an interview.

Paul Dergarabedian, comScore senior media analyst, said it’s not surprising the film found success through the crowd-funding website. Calling the short a picture-perfect scenario, he said the most successful Kickstarter campaigns go viral.

“It shows the power of utilizing social media as a way to provide resources to realize people’s creative vision,” he said.

Research shows young LGBT characters and storylines are way underrepresented in both short and feature length films.

In 2016, only three out of 4,544 speaking characters in the top 100 grossing films were LGBT teenagers or younger, according to a report released Monday.

There was just one out of 4,370 in 2015, according to data compiled by the Media, Diversity, & Social Change Initiative at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.

Project administrator Marc Choueiti said younger LGBT characters are also rarely seen in short films.

In a separate study, the researchers evaluated films screening at Lunafest, a national short film festival. They found that between 2002 and 2015, 115 short films had four characters who identified themselves as LGBT teenagers.

Lead researcher Stacy L. Smith said shorts often showcase different worldviews than in top grossing full-length features.

Smith said “In A Heartbeat” is an outlier along with “The Imitation Game,” ‘’Moonlight” and the Freeform show “The Fosters” in showcasing experiences of LGBT youth.

“People aren’t seeing rich, complex and compelling LGBT youth,” she said. “The short should be applauded for representing the world we live in.”

Watch "In a Heartbeat," the Short Film About
a Boy’s Heart Chasing the Guy of His Dreams

It'll give you all the feels.
By Gabe Bergado |

Earlier this year, our hearts were aflutter after watching the trailer for the short film In a Heartbeat. And now, the production in its entirety is finally here.

In a Heartbeat  follows the story of a young boy who's still in the closet, his secret put at risk when his heart pops out of his chest in pursuit for his dream boy. In just a smidgen over four minutes, the short film will take you on a roller coaster of emotions. But by the end, you won't be able to help the huge grin on your face and the warmth in your chest — and perhaps even some tears with how beautiful it is..

Created by Beth David and Esteban Bravo — who started the adorable film as their senior thesis project at Ringling College of Art and Design — the duo has spent countless hours on the project. And it was well worth it seeing as how the internet almost instantly fell in love with, creating tons of fan art and buzz before it even was released. It's an impeccable production, from the plot to the sound design to the animation, something that you could really see as the short that typically comes before full-length 3D-animated features in the movie theaters. Beth and Esteban have also been showing it at various festivals.

"This film means a lot to us, and it touches on emotions that we hope will resonate with people from all different backgrounds," Beth and Esteban tell Teen Vogue. "We are so grateful for all the support and enthusiasm we've received over the past few months; we started this project more than a year and a half ago and we've been waiting for this moment as much as everyone else has."
