Yesterday was All Saints Day. Today is All Souls Day, also Dia de los Muertos.

This morning I was putting away my jack-o-lanterns for another year, and I noticed I had forgotten to put out my Halloween story book as part of my decorations.  >:(  :(

I'm a member of another forum, and each "Spooky Season", they do a thread that is called "31 Days of Halloween".  The goal is to watch 31 horror films for the month of October.

I did this the past three years, and I'm participating this year as well.   I'm copying their rules here, and I'll share what I've seen so far in the next post (updates to follow).

Perhaps this will put people in the mood to watch some scary movies for October.

The 31 Days of Halloween

1. The Number of the Beast is 31: You mission, should you choose to hack-cept it, is to view at least 31 films between October 1 and October 31, and join the select few who get to claim their ghoulish No Prize. While a film per day is encouraged, double and triple-billing (or more) is perfectly acceptable and often necessary. A few even dare go...beyond 31.

2. Medium Be Damned: The movies shall not be just theatrical, obviously. original TV, Cable, DVD/VHS, YOutube, theatrical, and Streaming movies shall be legal tender as well. So you can watch movies on whatever works even on your phone, if you enjoy breaking David Lynch's heart.

3. Leave A Trail: Please provide a link or description for all the films you view. This will allow the others the chance to add to their watch lists for later or just to compare progress. Feel free to also add poster art and/or trailers as well to add color to your post. And of course your own thoughts on film would be nice to hear...before the end.

4. Simpsons Can't Do It: Halloween-themed episodes of a regular series don't count. Nor do episodes of supernatural-themed shows like Stranger Things, The X-Files, American Horror Story. TV specials like It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown may count. Use your judgement on if a short film is too short to count as a film in itself or if you want to count it for half. If it's something If you plan on binging through an entire season of something, that's worth noting but you should count it separately if at all, along with any other series episodes you might want to talk about.

5. "Horror" is more like a Guidline: it doesn't have to be an actual 'horror movie', per say. Comedies with the appropriate themes are fine; Ghostbusters, Beetlejuice, Abbot and Costello Meet the Frankenstein, etc... Ditto for action flicks like Blade, Aliens,... Godzilla? Sure.  (Batman...uh...I dunno, maybe? We've all accepted Joker and Venom in previous years. Maybe certain Bat-flicks?)

Tell him when l come up to him and ask to play the record, l'm gonna say: ''Voulez-vous jouer ce disque?''

Will you play my record? One-track mind!

As of 10/16.

01.  Trilogy of Terror - A 1975 American made-for-television anthology horror film directed by Dan Curtis and starring Karen Black. It features three segments, each based on unrelated short stories by Richard Matheson. The first follows a college professor who seeks excitement with her students; the second is about twin sisters who have a bizarre relationship. These two segments were adapted by William F. Nolan. The third, adapted by Matheson, himself, focuses on a woman terrorized by a Zuni fetish doll in her apartment. Black stars in all three segments, and plays dual roles in the second.

02.  Halloween A 1978 American independent slasher film directed and scored by John Carpenter, co-written with producer Debra Hill, and starring Jamie Lee Curtis (in her film debut) and Donald Pleasence, with P. J. Soles and Nancy Kyes in supporting roles. The plot centers on a mental patient, Michael Myers, who was committed to a sanitarium for murdering his babysitting teenage sister on Halloween night when he was six years old. Fifteen years later, he escapes and returns to his hometown, where he stalks a female babysitter and her friends while under pursuit by his psychiatrist.

03.  The Prophecy II  -  Evil angel Gabriel (Christopher Walken) rises from hell to declare war on God and humanity. To win the spiritual war, Gabriel has to kill Los Angeles nurse Valerie Rosales (Jennifer Beals) -- and, more importantly, her unborn half-angel baby. Helping Gabriel track Rosales down is a suicidal teenager (Brittany Murphy). Meanwhile, good angel Danyael (Russell Wong) marshals all his heavenly powers to protect Rosales and her child from Gabriel's clutches.

04.  Land Of The Dead  -  In a world where zombies form the majority of the population, the remaining humans build a feudal society away from the undead. Ruthless Paul Kaufman (Dennis Hopper) rules and protects this microcosm but enforces painful class distinctions. Second-in-command Cholo DeMora (John Alberto Leguizamo) attempts to lead a secret rebellion against Kaufman's tyranny, but when the zombies begin to evolve, the survivors must discover a way to protect themselves from a zombie hoard that can learn and adapt.

05.  Dawn Of The Dead (2004)   When her husband is attacked by a zombified neighbor, Ana (Sarah Polley) manages to escape, only to realize her entire Milwaukee neighborhood has been overrun by the walking dead. After being questioned by cautious policeman Kenneth (Ving Rhames), Ana joins him and a small group that gravitates to the local shopping mall as a bastion of safety. Once they convince suspicious security guards that they are not contaminated, the group bands together to fight the undead hordes.

06.  Final Destination - Alex Browning (Devon Sawa), is embarking on a trip to Paris. Alex experiences a premonition -- he sees the plane explode moments after leaving the ground. Alex insists that everyone get off the plane and 7 people including Alex, are forced to disembark. All watch as the plane actually explodes in a fireball. He and the other survivors have briefly cheated death, but will not be able to evade their fate for very long. One by one, these fugitives from fate fall victim to the grim reaper.

07.  Final Destination 2 - Kimberly (A. J. Cook) has a premonition of a horrible highway accident killing multiple people -- including her and her friends. She blocks the cars behind her on the ramp from joining traffic -- and as a police trooper (Michael Landes) arrives, the accident actually happens. Now, Death is stalking this group of mistaken survivors -- and one by one they are dying as they were supposed to on the highway.

08.  Final Destination 3 - Six years after a group of high-school students first cheated death, another teen (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) has a premonition that she and her friends will be involved in a horrifying roller-coaster accident. When the vision proves true, the student and her fellow survivors must deal with the repercussions of cheating the Grim Reaper.

09.  Carrie  -  In this chilling adaptation of Stephen King's horror novel, withdrawn and sensitive teen Carrie White (Sissy Spacek) faces taunting from classmates at school and abuse from her fanatically pious mother (Piper Laurie) at home. When strange occurrences start happening around Carrie, she begins to suspect that she has supernatural powers. Invited to the prom by the empathetic Tommy Ross (William Katt), Carrie tries to let her guard down, but things eventually take a dark and violent turn.

10.  Misery  -  After a serious car crash, novelist Paul Sheldon (James Caan) is rescued by former nurse Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates), who claims to be his biggest fan. Annie brings him to her remote cabin to recover, where her obsession takes a dark turn when she discovers Sheldon is killing off her favorite character from his novels. As Sheldon devises plans for escape, Annie grows increasingly controlling, even violent, as she forces the author to shape his writing to suit her twisted fantasies.

11.  Christine  -  Unpopular nerd Arnie Cunningham (Keith Gordon) buys a 1958 Plymouth Fury, which he names Christine. Arnie develops an unhealthy obsession with the car, to the alarm of his jock friend, Dennis Guilder (John Stockwell). After bully Buddy Repperton (William Ostrander) defaces Christine, the auto restores itself to perfect condition and begins killing off Buddy and his friends. Determined to stop the deaths, Dennis and Arnie's girlfriend, Leigh Cabot (Alexandra Paul), decide to destroy Christine.

12.  The Town That Dreaded Sundown (1976)  -  A 1976 American thriller horror film loosely based on the 1946 Texarkana Moonlight Murders, crimes attributed to an unidentified serial killer known as the Phantom Killer.  The film states that "the incredible story you are about to see is true, where it happened and how it happened; only the names have been changed." The actual Phantom attacked eight people in or near the town of Texarkana, Texas, which is on the Texas border with Arkansas. Most of the murders occurred in rural areas just outside Texarkana, in Bowie County, Texas, while the film has them occurring in Arkansas. However, the general outline of the murders largely follows reality, with mostly minor artistic license taken. As in the film, the real killer was never identified nor apprehended.

13.  The Conjuring  -  In 1970, paranormal investigators and demonologists Lorraine and Ed Warren are summoned to the home of Carolyn and Roger Perron. The Perrons and their five daughters have recently moved into a secluded farmhouse, where a supernatural presence has made itself known. Though the manifestations are relatively benign at first, events soon escalate in horrifying fashion, especially after the Warrens discover the house's macabre history.

14.  13 Ghosts (2001)  -    A family that inherits a spectacular old house from an eccentric uncle. There's just one problem: the house seems to have a dangerous agenda all its own. Trapped in their new home by strangely shifting walls, the family encounters powerful and vengeful entities that threaten to annihilate anyone in their path.

15.  Jeepers Creepers  -  After making a horrific discovery in the basement of an old abandoned church, Trish and her brother Darry watch their routine road trip home from college turn into a heart-stopping race for their lives. They find themselves the chosen prey of an indestructible force that relentlessly pursues them and gives a new and chilling meaning to the old song "Jeepers Creepers."

16.  Jeepers Creepers 2  -  After his son is set upon by a scarecrow that seems to have come alive, farmer Jack Taggart Sr. and his son, Jack Taggart Jr., go looking for an explanation. Meanwhile, a bus carrying high-school students breaks down nearby, and a creature known as the Creeper starts a killing spree. The elder Taggart soon realizes that the killings and the attack on his son are connected, and, after alerting the community to be on guard, he aims to pummel the Creeper.

18.  Puppet Master  -  Assailed by nightmarish visions, Alex Whitaker and his fellow psychics descend on the Bodega Bay Inn. There, they discover that their compatriot Neil has apparently committed suicide. But, as the gruesome visions continue, they sense that there's still something sinister afoot. When they find themselves hunted by a band of homicidal marionettes created by twisted puppeteer Andre Toulon, they discover they're right.

19.  Puppet Master II  -  A group of parapsychologists led by Carolyn Bramwell move into the hotel at Bodega Bay to investigate the reports of the living dolls there. The puppets soon emerge and begin killing the members of the group. The elderly Enrique Chenee, who claims to be the owner of the hotel, turns up, his face hidden behind bandages and dark glasses. Chenee is really the puppetmaster Andre Toulon, whose body has been dug up and revived by the puppets. Toulon believes Carolyn to be the reincarnation of his late wife Elsa and prepares to conduct a ceremony that will transfer their souls into life-size mannequins so that they can be together again.

20.  Puppet Master III: Toulon's Revenge  -  In Berlin in 1941, puppetmaster Andre Toulon attracts Nazi attention with his puppet show that mocks Adolf Hitler. The German scientist Dr Hess is working on a formula to create zombie Stormtroopers. When Gestapo Major Kraus goes to apprehend Toulon, Toulon?s beloved wife Elsa is shot. Toulon then swears revenge against those responsible.

Spent today at an event called Haunt O Ween here in NJ.

It was a walk through Halloween themed event, billed as "family friendly", so we went there with Trent, who will be nine at the end of next month.
