TYPHOON
To Charles Robert Blake, 25 September 2018, x-man

Your ghost must surely tire
of my summoning you back
from our happy voyages upon past seas
to save me once again,
when unexpected memories
wake up the sorrows
still sleeping fitfully within
uncharted quadrants of my soul.

In the midst of constant storm,
I was trying to tack against the wind
until you took the helm.
Then, when winds began to calm,
my course to steady,
together we sailed
into the eye of that typhoon
where gale was transformed
into your soft murmurings,
and I began to shiver.

While now I am amazed to discover
skies so much more vast than love,
I still grow uneasy when I cannot see
what hides behind the sometimes lowering clouds.

My ocean may have shrunk
to the salty sea inside us all,
and, though I know we all must sail
upon reflections forever insubstantial,
and my mind now searches for
the intelligible order of Existence,
my undissuaded soul still holds your eye--
even if to other men you sleep.

So, what will I ever be
but a solitary sailor,
an uncertain vagabond far-rover,
still guided by that single star
reflected in your eyes so long ago?

My little bit of wisdom has finally
revealed to me the mystery--
your touch surely was the key:
Only because of you,
can I glimpse at last, at least
the silhouette of all Reality--
and never, could I ever,
have asked for more.
Happiness is the lasting pleasure of the mind grasping the intelligible order of reality.      --Leibniz
