My first ever drabble:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
November 1985
Dozy E Ranch
Ten Sleep, Wyoming

“Never liked them damn purple chairs, Jack,” Ennis said, putting the last of the Thanksgiving dishes into the cupboard.  “I know you got ‘em in the divorce an’ all, but, they just ain’t me.”

“We can’t afford new ones, En.  You know that.  Maybe next year the ranch’ll do better and we can get those oak ladder-back ones you like.  It’s not like we have folks over that often, anyway.”  Jack finished wiping the glasses dry and handed two to Ennis.  “We may not have much, but we got each other,” said Jack, snapping the dishtowel and connecting with its intended target, Ennis’s ass.

“Goddammit!” Ennis squealed, almost dropping the glasses.

“C’mon, cowboy, tell me where it hurts.” Jack grabbed him from behind and tried to subdue the squirming Ennis.  “Let’s hit the hay, I’m beat.”

“You’re beat?”  Ennis laughed.

Gravel kicked up and sprayed the trailer, coming off a passing semi and Ennis awoke with a gasp.  Tonight, the pillow was wet.

Thanks, Mark.  I had to write it out long-hand first. LOL

You're all so good, I felt inspired to give it a try.

Awesome drabbles everyone!  :D

Here is a poem I wrote a while back ..
(I wish Ennis kept a journal, might've released some of the demons ..)

E. Del Mar Journal
Entry number 10, dated April 1974

The days in between ..

The days in between drag ever so slowly
Determined to wear me down to the bone
The seconds tick at a snail's pace
As if to mock and tease me to my face ..

The days in between leave me hungry, starved
Hollow, desperate, shaken, fearful, angry;
They bleed me dry, leaving but an empty shell
My words on their own can not possibly tell ..

The days in between, I am, I simply be
All the passions I know rest with you.
They leave me craving, begging for another taste
Of you, our days; I pray they come with haste ..

The days in between are easier on me, I guess
For I know how much she hurts when I am aloof.
I pretend I can't hear the sobs or see her tears
Yet I've lived with the guilt all these years ..

If I must live a thousand more hours like these,
So be it.
They're worth it, for another glance at you
To me, beloved, you have no idea what you do ..

Drabbles...short snippets of stories or dialogue, are good writing exercises and fun to read. Authors are often challenged to write a drabble in response to a prompt: a word, a phrase, or something similar. A few months ago, I was in an interactive forum where we had an impromptu "drabblefest." A bunch of authors were online and we wrote quick drabbles in response to prompts people threw at us.

I thought we could do the same thing here, but have it be ongoing, not a one shot thing. My thought: someone (me or whoever) can post a prompt and writers can respond with drabbles. Readers are encouraged to join in with comments. There is no limit to the number of drabbles. When the writing dies down on a prompt, someone can post a new one and the writing begins again.

I'd like to keep guidelines to a minimum. Drabbles should be 100-300 words and be somehow BBM related.

I'll start with a few prompts (and the first drabble). Since it is cold here, winter is on my mind. How about it people write something in response to:
  • bitter cold
  • snow
  • winter wheat

Have fun, everyone! Please feel free to join in. All are welcome to share their writings, ideas, and comments. Enjoy...

Leslie

I know this is an old one, but I chose bitter cold.

Until the cold, cold night when Jack had grabbed a sleeping Ennis’s hand and put it on his burning, yearning cock, Ennis hadn’t known what a touch could be.  He hadn’t felt a kind hand on him since the time his mama died and Alma had found him, and he hadn’t known how much he missed it.  Ennis would have settled for just a little affection, but Jack Twist had given him love in all its forms.  Not that Ennis thought of it that way; all he knew was he had never felt warmth like that which Jack gave him.

Oh, this is great. Paul and Bailey, welcome to the Drabblefest! Mark, Lucise and Janice, thanks for your continuing contributions. For everyone who has posted, thanks!!

I missed today...this stupid business trip is occupying my mind. But, I am hoping to have some time on my trip to catch up, and part of my catching up will be a little different twist for the drabblefest. Stay tuned....

We will have prompts tomorrow.

A slightly different take on prompts this morning:

  • as comfortable as an old pair of slippers
  • as soft as a newborn's skin
  • as harsh as the wind off a mountain

Have fun!
