I'm running a little behind  :)  - from Friday's prompts:

Obstinate Regrets

He woke to the sound of rain on what would've been his daddy's 65th birthday, somber and reflective, struck by the fact that he'd lived longer than his father had.  He could still picture him clearly  - tall and proud with that obstinate set to his jaw; a man of few words, he'd brooked no weakness with his steadfast set of rules.  "Remember, boy, runnin your mouth off only leads to trouble-you can't ever be hurt by something you don't say."

He sighed wearily as his eyes shifted to the narrow closet door. One more thing he'd been wrong about.

Falling Back

He sat at his usual spot at the end of the bar, sipping his beer, eyes cast downward and shoulders slumped in exhaustion. It had been a long day – and night.

"Be nice getting that extra hour tonight, huh?"

He looked up, startled.  "Uh…what's that?"

The bartender was standing on a chair, turning the hands of the clock on the wall backward.  "Extra hour - ya know, 'fall back' and all that."

"Oh…yeah…" He'd forgotten, actually, and now he found himself feeling even more depressed.  All it meant was another hour to sit there and drink.

One more hour without him.

Pumpkin Patches and Whiskey Springs

Jack sat down and pulled Bobby close, his heart sinking a little with the realization that his son had inherited more than his dark hair.

He grabbed the mail out of the box.  There was the bank statement - he would let Lureen open that.  Some fancy envelope that probably had an invitation to some hifalutin’ thingamajig.  Fliers from the grocery store.  A catalog.  He flipped through everything again, out of habit.  And a third time for good measure.  It didn’t happen often, but when it did, well, that was reason enough to check the daggone mail every damn day.

“Anything good today?” Lureen asked him as he walked in, eyeing the mail.

“Nah,” he said, handing the mail over to her as he shrugged out of his coat.

No postcard today.  Maybe tomorrow.

Aww, "maybe tomorrow" - that's our Jack.  I love when you drabble, Kelly!  Thanks.

No Boundaries

He was almost there, he could tell – not by the position of the sun, or by how many miles he'd traveled, but by the rapid beating of his heart, the prickling along his skin, the clenching in his gut.  He eased off the accelerator, willing his heartbeat to slow.  For as desperately as he wanted – needed – to be there, the last mile always brought back the fear, not of the tire irons, but of losing himself.

For he was nearing that place where there were no boundaries ….where mind and heart, body and soul, Jack and Ennis, all became one.
