"You know that is the thing about them dang mules.  At first glance, they seem to be just
like a horse."  They give you the opinion they are smart and obedient.  They will be the same kind
of help you get from a horse."  Ennis said as he adjusted the diamond hitches and tightened the
load they were carrying back up the mountain..."They are sure footed, not clumsy at all.  But they
are always so easily spooked..don't take much to set em off, and they run for the hills.  Sure gotta
keep a good watch on them damnable critters.  They gonna get us kilt one a these days.  Thas fer
sure."  "Well I guess its a way a earning a dollar.  Its money I guess.  No matter whacha doin."  He
threw back over his shoulder as he headed back to camp.

Janice, this is so totally Ennis.  You get into his mind so well.  Thanks.

At First Glance

At first glance, it didn't look like a person, just a bloody, rotting husk…

At first glance, it looked like they were only sleeping in those wooden boxes…

At first glance, he thought he'd be able to get the truck working again…

At first glance, her smile made him feel safe…

At first glance, his gaze made him uncomfortable…

At first glance, he thought he didn't care that their time had been cut short…

At first glance, he couldn't believe his eyes after four long years…

At first glance, it was just an old shirt hanging in a dark closet…

Flying High

He'd gotten it for a good price, second-hand from another ranch hand whose children were now grown, and the girls had been beside themselves with excitement when he'd set it up; but what surprised him most was how much enjoyment he got from it.

All his life he'd made do and settled for, but he wanted more than just good enough for his little girls.  For a brief time he'd known the euphoria of flying free, feeling the wind against his face, looking down at the world below, so he loved to watch their laughing faces, tiny fingers gripping the chains, as he gave in to their pleas to be pushed higher and higher yet.

Throwing Caution To The Wind

January 1966

Jack limped out of the store, cigarettes in hand, counting his change to see what kind of meal he could eke out that night.  He sighed with relief as he sat down in his truck, throwing his beat-up Resistol on the seat, rubbing his thigh, and frowning slightly as he noticed the new writing on the side of the pack.  CAUTION:  Cigarette Smoking May Be Hazardous to Your Health.  Yeah…he'd heard talk of that.

Bunch a horseshit if you asked him. He risked his neck riding bulls every chance he got; he wasn't about to be scared of no damn smokes. He finished his cigarette and tossed the butt out the window as he drove off, chafing at the thought of rules and warnings of any kind.  He'd had his fill and more of all that back in Lightning Flat.

Another Saturday Night...

It was the usual Saturday night crowd at the Black and Blue Eagle bar and the usual Saturday night jabber.

"Thought you said your old lady made you promise you wouldn't drink more than three beers tonight?"

"Well, she ain't here is she? How's she gonna know any different, huh?"

"Well, I dunno - can't be too careful nowadays; ain't ya never seen that TV show?  Hell, you could be taking a piss and that guy could jump out and tell ya to 'smile 'cause you're on Candid Camera!'"

Guffaws filled the air and crude retorts flew back and forth, embarrassing scenarios growing wilder by the minute.

The man sitting alone at the end of the bar automatically hunched his shoulders and lowered his head a little more, squirming slightly at the tingling sensation on the back of his neck.
