High & Dry

The grey sky had turned the trailer into a dark cavern. His large hand swallowed the hole punch as he restlessly drove the spikes through the holes. He was ganna take it easy today, finish off some lagging paper work before heading down to the bar for a few quiet drinks with mates. But his mind turned like the blades of the fan swinging from the ceiling like a metallic monkey.
Heading out to his truck he gazed over in the direction of the mountain, it's peak spot lit by a small gap in the clouds. The radio blared as he turned the ignition, promptly switched it off, the twanging guitar only conflicting with his turning thoughts today.
Picking up his horse at the jump-off, he had a uncomfortable feeling, the trees before him momentarily blurring into a green haze. Almost turning around he was drawn on by an invisible hand, his hunger unsatisfied.
He galloped along the main track before pulling onto a ridge above the camp where he knew the boys should be. Slowing to a trot he reached into the saddle carry bag for his binoculars. The campsite was deserted, but the wind carried voices up to his lonely perch. He turned his attention to a clearing just in time to see two shirtless figures buttoning up their pants.
Just in time.

The atmosphere you paint is so evocative, stonebiscuit - and this blends so well into the story.  Thank you!

The Summer of His Discontent

He was having one for the road when they walked in - the dark haired one leading the way, the other clutching a paper sack, eyes on the floor.  He listened in a bit, heard they were working for that hard-ass Aguirre, and the memories came back quickly …

…froze his ass off at night, the sheep stench about killed him, and he still couldn't look at a can of beans…he'd kept hoping something would happen to bring him down early, but no such luck….

Worst summer of his life. Those boys had no idea what they were getting into.

He took the drink, the last one for the road.  The same road that night after night he walked to his lonely, empty house.  The same thought always occurred to him when he approached his back door:  "They're all gone, and they ain't commin' back."

Inside the bare bulb lit kitchen he pour what really is the last one for the road.

Scott!  Wonderful to see you!  :)  I see that your writing is as beautiful and as moving as ever...

"So be it Daddy", she said....

I'm glad she won't just "let be."  This is wonderful, Scott.  Thank you.

Whistling in the Wind

She'd thanked Kurt's aunt politely – Such a lovely gift! We'll use it often! – but knew she'd never take it out of the box.

Because for her, the sound of a whistling teapot wasn't homey or soothing. It didn't conjure images of cozy afternoons sipping fragrant tea and eating warm, homemade cookies; but, rather, of a young wife and mother staring blankly ahead with red-rimmed eyes as the pressure built, the steam rose, and the whistle shrieked louder and louder, sounding an alarm too late.

The storm had already blown in from the south and nothing would ever be the same.

The banging door was the last he had heard from his son, three days ago. Bobby had been suspicious ever since Ennis and he had moved to the ranch. At his last visit, it was time to lay all cards on the table when Bobby had asked him right away if they were gay.
His boy was 23 now, not even a boy anymore. Ennis had thrown a fit, but what else could he have said than yes?

The ringing of the phone interrupted his glum thoughts. It was Bobby.
