Most beautiful love song
« on: February 13, 2007, 04:59:48 pm »
I really love Ae Fond Kiss , a song written at the end of the 18th century by Scottish national poet Robert Burns.

This is actually a song about parting. Robert Burns wrote it for his lover Clarinda. Burns and Clarinda never met again although a few letters were exchanged.
Clarinda remembered that day of parting forever. At the age of 72, in her journal, under the date 6th December 1831 ( 40 yrs to the day after they last met ) she wrote: "This day I never can forget. Parted with Burns, in the year 1791, never more to meet in this world, Oh may we meet in Heaven".

Sir Walter Scott remarked, in reference to the four last lines of the second stanza: "this contains the essence of a thousand love tales and furthermore that one verse is worth a thousand romances".

Here's the song:

Ae Fond Kiss

Ae fond kiss, and then we sever
Ae farewell, and then forever
Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll pledge thee,
Warring sighs and goans I'll wage thee.

Who shall say that Fortune grieves him,
While the star of hope she leaves him
Me nae cheerful twinkle lights me,
Dark despair around benights me.

I'll ne'er blame my partial fancy:
Nothing could resist my Nancy
But to see her was to love her
Love but her, and love for ever.

Had we never loe'd sae kindly,
Had we never loe'd sae blindly,
Never met - nor never parted -
We had ne'er been broken-hearted.

Fare thee weel, thou first and fairest
Fare thee weel, thou best and dearest
Thine be ilka joy and treasure,
Peace, Enjoyment, Love and Pleasure

Ae fond kiss, and then we sever
Ae farewell, alas, for ever
Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll pledge thee,
Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee.

How about you? What is yours?

Those lyrics are absolutely beautiful Michela! I wonder if we can find the musical score (or even a CD) of it somewhere on the Internet?

Probably my favorite love song is "My Heart Will Go On" by Celine Dion. I know it isn't a very old song, but I think it's probably my favorite.  :D

I've always thought that The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face by Roberta Flack was a beautiful love song.  That and "All I Ask of You" from Phantom...Bob and I are going to have our dance to that one at our wedding a week from Saturday  :D

First Time Ever I Saw Your Face

The first time ever I saw your face
I thought the sun rose in your eyes
And the moon and stars were the gifts you gave
To the dark and the empty skies, my love,
To the dark and the empty skies.

The first time ever I kissed your mouth
And felt your heart beat close to mine
Like the trembling heart of a captive bird
That was there at my command, my love
That was there at my command.

And the first time ever I lay with you
I felt your heart so close to mine
And I knew our joy would fill the earth
And last till the end of time my love
It would last till the end of time my love

The first time ever I saw your face, your face,
your face, your face

All I Ask Of You

No more talk of darkness,
Forget these wide-eyed fears.
I'm here, nothing can harm you
My words will warm and calm you.
Let me be your freedom,
Let daylight dry your tears.
I'm here, with you, beside you,
To guard you and to guide you . . .
Then say you love me every winter morning,
Turn my head with talk of summertime . . .
Say you need me with you, now and always . . .
Promise me that all you say is true
That's all I ask of you . . .
Let me be your shelter,
Let me be your light.
You're safe: no-one will find you
Your fears are far behind you . . .
All I need is freedom,
A world that's warm and bright
And you always beside me
To hold me and to hide me . . .
Then say you'll share with me
One love, one lifetime . . .
Let me lead you from your solitude . . .
Say you need me with you here, beside you . . .
Anywhere you go,let me go too
That's all I ask of you . . .
Say the word and I will follow you...
Share each day with me, each night, each morning . . .
Say you feel the way I do
That's all I ask of you . . .
Anywhere you go let me go too . . .
Love me -that's all I ask of you . . .

Many artists recorded Ae Fond Kiss. The two versions I prefer are by two Scottish singers: Eddie Reader from her cd Eddie Reader sings the songs of Robert Burns, and Karen Matheson, from the cd Hands Across the Water.
You can download them on iTunes or buy the cds if you want!

I am with Janice on Time in a Bottle, so my second one would have be a tie betwixt Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You" and an old mountain song recorded by Robin and Linda Williams "Across the Blue Mountain", which no doubt came from the British Isles:

One morning, one morning, one morning in May
I heard a married man to a young girl say
Go dress you up pretty Katy and come go with me
Across the Blue Mountains to the Allegheny

I'll buy you a horse, love, and a saddle to ride
I'll buy myself another to ride by your side
WeÕll stop at every tavern, we'll drink when we're dry
Across the Blue Mountains go my Katy and I

Well, up spoke her mother, and angry was she then
Saying Daughter, oh dear Daughter, he's a married man
And there's young men a'plenty more handsome than he
Let him take his own wife to the Alleghey

Oh Mother, oh Mother, he's the man of my heart
And wouldn't it be a dreadful thing if we should have to part
For I'd envy every woman who I'd ever see
Go cross the Blue Mountains to the Allegheny

We left before daybreak on a buckskin and a roan
Past tall shivering pines where mockingbirds moan
Past dark cabin windows where eyes never see
Across the Blue Mountains to the Allegheny

"It was only you in my life, and it will always be only you, Jack, I swear."

The Look of Love - Burt Bacharach, Dusty Springfield's version
Night and Day - Cole Porter
They Can't Take That Away From Me - George Gershwin
The Way You Look Tonight - Jerome Kern
In Your Eyes - Peter Gabriel
Here, There, and Everywhere - The Beatles
At Polwarth on the Green - I have Jean Redpath singing it.
You're the Top - Cole Porter
Where or When - I love, believe it or not, Tom Wopat's version
The Girl from Ipanema - Astrud Giberto's version is great
Le Chanson des Vieux Amants - Jacques Brel
I Need You to Turn to - Elton John
Happy Together - The Turtles (okay, now I've gone to a love songs website to jog my memory)
God Only Knows - The Beach Boys
To Sir With Love - Lulu
This Guy's in Love With You - Herb Alpert
I Say a Little Prayer for You - I forget, it's by Burt Bacharach
Moon River - the classic Andy Williams version

There's a few.  I know there are many more I love, just can't think of them.

My number one love song is always "Unchained Melody" by the Righteous Brothers.

Others that come close are:

Falling Into You.....Celine Dion
You Were Always on My Mind.....Elvis
I Will Always Love You.....Witney Houston
Being happy doesn't mean everything is perfect.

It means you've decided to see beyond the imperfection
