A song that makes me think of Brokeback Mountain
« on: April 21, 2006, 01:04:47 pm »
I know there was a thread about songs that remind us of BBM on the old board, but I have just discovered this song by P.J Harvey, a British singer I like a lot. It's called "Slow Drug" (and you feel like you're high too, when you listen to the tune ;D)
I thought this is what Ennis could've felt after the second tent scene (or the reunion romp in the motel).

Blue now is the colour,
Love, the drug I'm needing,
Got to keep this feeling.

With the headlights burning,
We're looking up for something,
Answers on the ceiling.

Watching out the windows,
Watch the way the wind blows,
Soon it will be morning.
Still the question lingers,
Twisted round my fingers:
Could you be my calling?

See this windboy falling,
Falling out of something,
It's the drug I'm needing.
Arrows that he's turning,
Need to keep this feeling,
Slow drug in the morning.

With the headlights burning,
Looking out for something
Something that we're needing (that I'm needing).

And still the question lingers,
Twisted round my fingers,
Could you be my calling?

So many things are there: the BLUE shirt, the HEADLIGHTS of the truck from which Ennis descends at dawn at the start of the film, those of Jack's pick-up too. The WIND that blew Jack Ennis's way, this drug that Jack becomes for Ennis... and of course that question about Jack being his calling, question that lingers TWISTed round his fingers...
Or is it just me showing serious signs of withdrawal symptoms as I have not seen BBM for well over a month now?? :'(

I like to play a Ryan Adam's song from his
CD - Jacksonville City Nights

Pa
Pa drove to town yesterday to pick out a grave
He found the lot where she'd lay
He drove to old man Ed Somerton's place
To find him some peace
He got there round about twelve
And he stayed 'till three
And the sun left him down in the valley
But the moon met him up in the hills by the lake
Reflecting the ghost of Ma's face
Suppertime came and went
No one heard from him

'Sis left his food on his plate
At the end of the table right next to ma's place
Where nobody sits
Telephone rang about four
My Sis answered it
And I felt the news through the floorboards
Like a long sullen moan,
like a wreck on the road
Like a joining of hands

Sha-la lala
Sha-la lala
Sha-la lala
Sha-la lala

So I drove to town yesterday
To pick out his grave
I found the lot where the'dy lay
I drove to old man Ed Somerton's place
To find me some peace

It isnt accurate with the time line of death
but it makes me wonder what it was like in the DelMar household
after the Mrs and Mr missed the only curve.

Why is there so much sadness in the world ??

Songs that instantly remind me of Brokeback Mountain? Well, I've got a nice one and a nauthy one.
The nice one first:

ANNIE'S SONG (John Denver)

You fill up me senses like a night in a forest
Like the mountains in springtime, like a walk in the rain
Like a storm in the desert, like a sleepy blue ocean
You fill up my senses come fill me again.

Come let me love you, let me give my life to you
Let me drown in your laughter, let me die in your arms
Let me lay down beside you, let me always be with you
Come let me love you, come love me again.
INSTRUMENTAL VERSE
...Let me give my life to you
Come let me love you, come love me again.

You fill up my senses like a night in a forest
Like the mountains in springtime, like a walk in the rain
Like a storm in the desert, like a sleepy blue ocean
You fill up my senses, come fill me again.

_______________

And now the naughty one:

THE BAD TOUCH (Bloodhound Gang):

Ha-ha! well now we call this the act of mating
But there are several other very important differences
Between human beings and animals that you should know about

I’d appreciate your input

Sweat baby sweat baby sex is a texas drought
Me and you do the kind of stuff that only prince would sing about
So put your hands down my pants and I’ll bet you’ll feel nuts
Yes I’m siskel, yes I’m ebert and you’re getting two thumbs up
You’ve had enough of two-hand touch you want it rough you’re out of bounds
I want you smothered want you covered like my waffle house hashbrowns
Come quicker than fedex never reach an apex like coca-cola stock you are
Inclined
To make me rise an hour early just like daylight savings time

Do it now
You and me baby ain’t nothin’ but mammals
So let’s do it like they do on the discovery channel
Do it again now
You and me baby ain’t nothin’ but mammals
So let’s do it like they do on the discovery channel
Gettin’ horny now

Love the kind you clean up with a mop and bucket
Like the lost catacombs of egypt only God knows where we stuck it
Hieroglyphics? let me be specific I wanna be down in your south seas
But I got this notion that the motion of your ocean means small craft advisory
So if I capsize on your thighs high tide, b5 you sunk my battleship
Please turn me on I’m mister coffee with an automatic drip
So show me yours I’ll show you mine tool time you’ll lovett just like lyle
And then we’ll do it doggy style so we can both watch x-files

Do it now
You and me baby ain’t nothin’ but mammals
So let’s do it like they do on the discovery channel
Do it again now
You and me baby ain’t nothin’ but mammals
So let’s do it like they do on the discovery channel
Gettin’ horny now

You and me baby ain’t nothin’ but mammals
So let’s do it like they do on the discovery channel
Do it again now
You and me baby ain’t nothin’ but mammals
So let’s do it like they do on the discovery channel
Do it now
You and me baby ain’t nothin’ but mammals
So let’s do it like they do on the discovery channel
Do it again now
You and me baby ain’t nothin’ but mammals
So let’s do it like they do on the discovery channel
Gettin’ horny now

--------------
Gotta love them both...  :P

I associate the movie very strongly with my favorite moody music.  For anyone who hasn't had a chance to listen to the radio station Philip set up, give it a try.  Really good selection of tunes.

I love the lyrics posted, they remind me of different aspects of the film.  One song that really gets me that feels in synch is How Will You Go by Crowded House.  The leisurely pace, the Finn brothers' amazing harmonies, and the "fell over on the couch" part, oy, gets me every time:

Escape is on your mind again
Escape to a far away land
At times it seems there is no end
To long hard nights of drinking

How will you go, how will you go
Drive through the wind and the rain
Cover it up, cover it up
I’ll find you a shelter to sleep in

I fell over on the couch again
But you know not all sleep is wasted
Your dreams are alcohol inspired
I can’t find a better way to face it

How will you go, how will you go
Drive through the wind and the rain
Cover it up, cover it up
I’ll find you a shelter to sleep in

And you know, I’ll be fine
Just don’t ask me how it’s going
Gimme time, gimme time
’cos I want you to see
’round the world, ’round the world
Is a tangled up necklace of pearls

How will you go, how will you go
Drive through the wind and the rain
Cover it up, cover it up
I’ll find you a shelter to sleep in

Just put the pillow over my face now....j/k.

Juan, I can't believe you like this song too!!! I'm a confessed Crowd-a-holic as well. Neil Finn is one of the best songwriters of the modern age, he is brilliant. This song, and the whole Woodface album is always in my playlist!!  *beaming*  Love it!!!  ;D ;D ;D

Oh excellent, another CH fan!  Yeah, Woodface was really such a high point of their's for me.  Everyone loves Weather With You, and deservedly so, but How Will You Go got me through a few crises.  And yeah, Neil Finn is an amazing singer/songwriter.  Shame his solo stuff hasn't had the same response.

I was lucky enough to see them on the tour for Woodface, what an excellent show.  They had such a kooky sense of humor.  Shame about Paul Hester eh?  At least the music will always live on....

I have a whole playlist of songs on my iPod which remind me of Brokeback but I can't remember all of them right now and my battery's flat and I left my charger at my Dad's and blah blah blah...

Anyway, here are two I can remember:

Fix You - Coldplay

When you try your best but you don't succeed
When you get what you want but not what you need
When you feel so tired but you can't sleep
Stuck in reverse

And the tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you can't replace
When you love someone but it goes to waste
could it be worse?

Lights will guide you home
and ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

High up above or down below
when you're too in love to let it go
but If you never try you'll never know
Just what your worth

Lights will guide you home
and ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

Tears stream down your face
When you lose something you cannot replace
Tears stream down your face and I

Tears stream down your face
I promise you I will learn from my mistakes
Tears stream down your face and I

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

and

Eternity - Robbie Williams

Close your eyes so you don't feel them
They don't need to see you cry
I can't promise I will heal you
But if you want to I will try
I sing this summer serenade
The past is done we've been betrayed
It's true
Someone said the truth will out
I believe without a doubt
in you

(chorus)
You were there for summer dreaming
and you gave me what I need
and I hope you'll find your freedom
for eternity, for eternity

Yesterday when you were walking
We talked about your mom and dad
What they did that made you happy,
What they did that made you sad
We sat and watched the sun go down
Picked a star before we lost
the moon
Youth is wasted on the young
before you know it's come and gone
too soon

You were there for summer dreaming
and you gave me what I need
and I hope you find your freedom
for eternity, for eternity

I sing this summer serenade
the past is done we've been betrayed
it's true
youth is wasted on the young
before you know it's come and gone
too soon

you were there for summer dreaming
and you are a friend indeed
and I hope you'll find your freedom
for eternity
you were there for summer dreaming
and you are a friend indeed
and I know you'll find your freedom
eventually
For eternity, for eternity

I love the line "Youth is wasted on the young" (hence why I used it for my avatar) because what always struck me when I watched the movie was how, as they got older, so their visits became colder. The were no longer young and carefree, they had individual struggles and it always saddened me when I compared it to how happy they were that first summer on Brokeback (shown so clearly in the flashback).

Anyway, I'll put the rest up once Jake's charged (I said I was a big Jake fan on the Intro board, I even named my iPod after him).

I've learnt that you cannot make someone love you. All you can do is stalk them and hope they panic and give in!

Fuzzy, those songs are great and really reminiscent of BBM, even though I've never heard them. Just reading them does it, thanks!

Here is a song from an album that I have been listening to since the seventies.
There are so many songs on Windsong that fit with the Brokeback theme, that I sometimes think it should have been "the soundtrack" for Brokeback.
It would have softened the movie, though.

Song of Wyoming
as performed by John Denver.
This song appears on three albums,
and was first released on the Windsong album

Well, Im weary and tired, Ive done my days ridin
Nighttime is rollin my way
The skys all on fire and the lights slowly fading
Peaceful and still ends the day
Out on the trail night birds are callin
Singin their wild melody
Down in the canyon cottonwood whispers
A Song of Wyoming for me

Well, Ive wandered around the town and the city
Tried to figure the how and the why
Well, Ive stopped all my schemin
Im just driftin and dreamin
Watching the river roll by
Here comes that big ole prairie moon risin
Shinin down bright as can be
Up on the hill theres a coyote singin
A Song of Wyoming for me

Now its whiskey and tobacco and bitter black coffee
A lonesome old dogie am I
But wakin up on the range
Lord I feel like an angel
Free like I almost could fly
Drift like a cloud out over the badlands
Sing like a bird in the tree
The wind in the sage sounds like heaven singin
A Song of Wyoming for me
A Song of Wyoming for me

Words and music by Kent Lewis

"The wind in the sage sounds like heaven singin"
lovely

I think I should make a list of John Dnver
songs that fit with Brokeback.
