This is a song I heard in the first week or so after my initial exposure to beautiful Brokeback Mountain in February 2006. The song is "Magic Power", a track from the 1981 LP Allied Forces by Triumph (which I just learned today was Canadian--up to now I had somehow thought they were Swedish!), so I had heard the song before back in my high-school days. But with the film so fresh in my mind, it was colored anew with those swirling emotions engendered thereby. It made me think of Alma Junior (one could imagine this as the song heard on the car radio at the end), and of the hopeful optimism in front of her young life. Conversely, it also made me think of the lost youth of Ennis, of how he no longer had that optimistic promise of that vanished summer of 1963...and no longer had Jack.

At any rate, here are the lyrics to this, my favorite Triumph song:

Something's at the edge of your mind, you don't know what it is
Somethin' you were hopin' to find but you're not sure what it is
Then you hear the music and it all comes crystal clear
The music does the talkin' says the things you want to hear

I'm young, I'm wild and I'm free
I got the magic power of the music in me

I'm young, I'm wild and I'm free
I got the magic power of the music in me

She climbs into bed, pulls the covers overhead and turns her little radio on
She's had a rotten day so she hopes the DJ's gonna play her favorite song
It makes her feel much better, brings her closer to her dreams
A little magic power makes it better than it seems

She's young now, she's wild now, she wants to be free
She gets the magic power of the music in me

If you're thinkin' it over but you just can't sort it out
Do you want someone to tell you what they think it's all about
Are you the one and only who's sad and lonely, reachin' for the top
Well the music keeps you goin' and it's never gonna stop
Never gonna stop
Never gonna, never gonna, never gonna stop

The world is full of compromise, and infinite red tape
But the music's got the magic, it's your one chance for escape
So turn me on - turn me up - it's your turn to dream
A little magic power makes it better than it seems

I'm young, I'm wild and I'm free
I got the magic power of the music in me...

I'm stealing this song from Rouxby, who noted how perfectly it fit for Ennis.  It's Strong Enough by Sheryl Crow:

God, I feel like hell tonight
Tears of rage I cannot fight
I'd be the last to help you understand
Are you strong enough to be my man?

Nothing's true and nothing's right
So let me be alone tonight
Cause you can't change the way I am
Are you strong enough to be my man?

Lie to me
I promise I'll believe
Lie to me
But please don't leave

I have a face I cannot show
I make the rules up as I go
Just try and love me if you can
Are you strong enough to be my man?

When I've shown you that I just don't care
When I'm throwing punches in the air
When I'm broken down and I can't stand
Will you be MAN ENOUGH to be my man?

Lie to me
I promise I'll believe
Lie to me
But please don't leave

Thanks Roux!!

I'm on a huuuuge Amy Winehouse kick, her album Back To Black is amazing.  But this song also stands out for the kind of pain and yearning it conveys, and it makes me think of Ennis, even though I think the chorus relates to him best.  The vocals, the ghostly backup, the production, wow.  It's called Wake Up Alone:

It’s okay in the day I’m staying busy
Tied up enough so I don’t have to wonder where is he
Got so sick of crying
So just lately
When I catch myself I do a 180
I stay up clean the house
At least I’m not drinking
Run around just so I don’t have to think about thinking
That silent sense of content
That everyone gets
Just disappears soon as the sun sets

This face in my dreams seizes my guts
He floods me with dread
Soaked to the soul
He swims in my eyes by the bed
Pour myself over him
Moon spilling in
And I wake up alone

If I was my heart
I’d rather be restless
The second I stop the sleep catches up and I’m breathless
There's this ache in my tears
As my day is done now
The dark covers me and I can run now
My blood running cold
I stand before him
It’s all I can do to assure him
When he comes to me
I drip for him tonight
Drowning in me we bathe under blue light

His face in my dreams seizes my guts
He floods me with dread
Soaked to the soul
He swims in my eyes by the bed
Pour myself over him
Moon spilling in
And I wake up alone
And I wake up alone
And I wake up alone
And I wake up alone

Ah Amy.....

The Flame - Cheap Trick

Another night slowly closes in,
And I feel so lonely.
Touching heat freezing on my skin,
I pretend you still hold me.

I'm going crazy, I'm losing sleep.
I'm in too far, I'm in way too deep over you.
I can't believe you're gone.

You were the first, you'll be the last.

Wherever you go, I'll be with you.
Whatever you want, I'll give it to you.
Whenever you need someone to lay your heart and head upon -
Remember: After the fire, after all the rain,
I will be the flame -
I will be the flame.

Watching shadows move across the wall,
I feel so frightened.
I wanna run to you, I wanna crawl,
But I've been hit by lightning.

Just can't stand up for fallin' apart.
Can't see through this veil across my heart
over you.
You'll always be The One.

You were the first, you'll be the last.
No more beans!

This says it all in a nutshell, doesn't it?

Juan, here's a video of Sheryl Crow singing "Strong Enough".  This song featured prominently in the car trip to the "I Did Once" Lake.  Very fitting.

Asking Us to Dance (words by Hugh Prestwood, sung by Kathy Mattea)

There's a full moon up and rising and there's a whisper of a breeze
Blowing through the tangled silver hanging from the cypress trees
There's a river made of moonlight flowing clear across the lake
And there's a million stars just waitin' to fall for any wish we make

Darling tonight I am reminded how much these two hearts need romance
You know it isn't all that often we get this kind of chance
Why don't we get caught in this moment be victims of sweet circumstance
Tonight I feel like all creation is asking us to dance

There'll be time enough tomorrow to get back to our daily bread
But there's something 'bout this evening that put this notion in my head
That heaven and the earth are meeting tonight upon this very spot
And all the things on earth worth having are things that we've already got

Darling tonight I am reminded...
Why don't we get caught in this moment...

It Might Be You (Theme from 'Tootsie') [1982], written by Alan and Marilyn Bergman and Dave Grusin, performed by Stephen Bishop (this song served as soundtrack to a recent Jack-and-Ennis-forever dream of mine):

Time... I've been passing time watching trains go by
All of my life...
Lying on the sand, watching seabirds fly
Wishing there would be
Someone waiting home for me...

Something's telling me it might be you
It's telling me it might be you...
All of my life...

Looking back as lovers go walking past...
All of my life
Wondering how they met and what makes it last

If I found the place
Would I recognize the face?
Something's telling me it might be you
Yeah, it's telling me it might be you

So many quiet walks to take
So many dreams to wake
And we've so much love to make

I think we're gonna need some time
Maybe all we need is time...
And it's telling me it might be you
All of my life...

I've been saving love songs and lullabies
And there's so much more
No one's ever heard before...

Something's telling me it might be you
Yeah, it's telling me it must be you
And I'm feeling it'll just be you
All of my life...
It's you..
It's you...
I've been waiting for all of my life...

Maybe it's you...
Maybe it's you...
I've been waiting for all of my life...

Maybe it's you...
Maybe it's you...
I've been waiting for all of my life...

'Feels So Right' by Alabama

Beautiful song...captures to perfection the warm, safe feeling of being close and drawing closer to someone very dear to your heart:

Feels So Right (lyrics and music by Randy Owen)

Whisper to me softly three words upon my skin
No ones near and listenin', so please don't say goodbye
Just hold me close and love me
Press your lips to mine
Mm, feels so right, feels so right

Lying here beside you, I hear the echoes of your sighs
Promise me you'll stay with me and keep warm tonight
So hold me close and love me
Give my heart a smile
Mm, feels so right, feels so right

Your body feels so gentle and my passion rises high
You're lovin' me so easy
Your wish is my command
Just hold me close and love me
Tell me it won't end.
Mm, feels so right, feels so right, feels so right

Aw, you feel so right baby...
