Surprise award for Grey's Anatomy
TV's Grey's Anatomy has been honoured by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, despite the use of a gay slur by one of its stars in January.
The Alliance demanded an apology after Grey's Anatomy actor Isaiah Washington allegedly used a derogatory term about co-star TR Knight last year.
Washington, 43, was then reprimanded by network ABC for repeating the word as he denied events at the Golden Globes.
The hit show won outstanding individual episode at the GLAAD media awards.
The annual awards recognise mainstream media for their "fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community".
The awards are split into four ceremonies in cities across the US.
Other winners at the Los Angeles ceremony included Ugly Betty, for outstanding television comedy series, and Oscar winner Little Miss Sunshine, which was named best film.
The Vanguard Award went to actress Jennifer Aniston for her efforts to increase "visibility and understanding" of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
Washington, who plays Dr Preston Burke in hospital drama Grey's Anatomy, apologised earlier this year, saying the slur was "unacceptable in any context or circumstance".
"I can also no longer deny to myself that there are issues I obviously need to examine within my own soul, and I've asked for help," he said in a statement in January.
Grey's Anatomy, now in its third season, won this year's Golden Globe for best television drama.
It is regularly the most-watched programme in the US, and is shown on Five and Living TV in the UK.
