That horrible pic of Jake was taken with overhead lighting.  I don't know anyone that kind of lighting flatters.  It takes away any definition of his nose and makes it look enormous, makes shadows under both his nose and upper lip (which has always hung over his lower), so that overhead lighting accentuates that and even a protruding vein on his temple.
