However, if you do plan an Antarctic expedition, be sure to include a stop to South Georgia Island, which has less glacial ice but far more wildlife. Other than abandoned whaling stations, one of which (Grytviken) is preserved as a museum, it is pristine. While about 16,000 people per year visit Antarctica, only about 4,000 visit South Georgia, but if you want to walk among literally thousands of penguins and seals, it is the place to go. I would go back in a heartbeat. As a bonus, Shackleton's grave is located on South Georgia. His story, immortalized in the book Endurance, is simply inspiring. The movie with Kenneth Branaugh is also quite good.

Once in NYC I went to an exhibit of photos taken on that horrible expedition of his. The photographer lugged that huge view camera acrost the ice and took one shot a day or ever so often. He had only a certain number of sheets of film.
What I remembered the most was the pictures of the dogs, there was a portrait of each one, each was named, and all were eventually eaten by the crew who had run out of food.

I've never seen Wyoming, so I'm looking forward to it. As for Europe, I'm doing that too!

It will cost me some pretty pennies, but there are members gonig to the Oxford gathering who I haven't seen since the first BBQ back in August of '06. It will be just shy of 2 years since we've seen each other last.
