I didn't like Madonna until I heard this song:

"Like a Prayer":  wow, almost twenty years ago.  That showed she was fearless.

Imagine being named "Madonna" in the first place.  (If that's truly her name; I had always heard it was Madonna Louise Ciccone.)

It's still brilliant.   I like it even better now.  Celibacy, sexual desire, saint worship, race relations, the concept of bearing witness.

And then, to frame it as a "play".

I agree, Truman, one of the best of the golden age of videos.

Hiya Paul!

Here's the deal on her name.  Madonna's mother was also named Madonna, and when she started to have kids, she had 2 boys first, and then named her first born daughter after herself.  Her full name is Madonna Louise Veronica (confirmation name) Ciccone.

Madonna has talked about her name in the past.....and said that when she was little, she wanted to be a nun, but gave up the idea when she found out she'd have to change her name.  Her mother gave her that name, and she didn't want to change it.

She went on to say if she had become a nun, she would've used her confirmation name as her new name, Veronica.  She picked that as her confirmation name, after hearing the Passion story in Catholic school.  She went on to say that in the time of Jesus, women were considered to be possessions, to be seen but not heard.  While Jesus was carrying his cross, no men would help him.  Suddenly, Veronica ran out from the crowd to wipe His face with her veil.  Madonna felt that was a very courageous and dramatic act, and to honor her, picked Veronica as her confirmation name.
