Gerbils like to live in groups and one may be unhappy if it is living alone. A hamster is fine living alone and doesn't need any companionship. In both cases, if you are going to have two of either, choose two males. The females of each are very aggressive with each other. A male gerbil in particular loves the companionship of another male. The male hamster can either me happy by itself or with another male hamster. Just don't put two females of either together.
