Jack's "Hippie" Songs

Katie77:
Who can forget the haunting music to the song by Procol Harum....

I'm still not sure what the words were all about, but the music got into your soul.

A WHITER SHADE OF PALE

We skipped the light fandango
And turned cartwheels across the floor
I was feeling kind of seasick
The crowd called out for more
The room was humming harder
As the ceiling flew away
Whe we called out for another drink
The waiter brought a tray

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face at first just ghostly
Turned a whiter shade of pale

She said there is no reason
And the truth is plain to see
But I wandered through my playing cards
Would not let her be
One of sixteen vestal virgins
Who were leaving for the coast
At the moment my eyes were open
They might just as well have been closed

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face at first just ghostly
Turned a whiter shade of pale

I think this part refers to Chaucer's Canterbury Tales:

"And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face at first just ghostly
Turned a whiter shade of pale"

Not sure about the rest, other than the Vestal Virgins coming from Roman mythology.

Usually I like to understand lyrics, but sometimes a haunting melody is enough.

As with a lot of the hippie songs of the sixties.....I think the lyrics depict that the singer is on some kind of hallucinatory drug, LSD being the flavour of the month back then.....

Katie77:
And then we had the angry protest songs......

EVE OF DESTRUCTION
Barry McGuire
Schreibr Sloan

The eastern world it tis explodin',
violence flarin', bullets loadin',
you're old enough to kill but not for votin',
you don't believe in war, what's that gun you're totin',
and even the Jordan river has bodies floatin',
but you tell me over and over and over again my friend,
ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction.

Don't you understand, what I'm trying to say?
Can't you see the fear that I'm feeling today?
If the button is pushed, there's no running away,
There'll be noone to save with the world in a grave,
take a look around you, boy, it's bound to scare you, boy,
but you tell me over and over and over again my friend,
ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction.

Yeah, my blood's so mad, feels like coagulatin',
I'm sittin' here, just contemplatin',
I can't twist the truth, it knows no regulation,
handful of Senators don't pass legislation,
and marches alone can't bring integration,
when human respect is disintegratin',
this whole crazy world is just too frustratin',
and you tell me over and over and over again my friend,
ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction.

Think of all the hate there is in Red China!
Tehn take a look around to Selma, Alabama!
Ah, you may leave here, for four days in space,
but when your eturn, it's the same old place,
the poundin' of the drums, th pride and disgrace,
you can bury your dead, but don't leave a trace,
hate your next-door-neighbour, but don't forget to say grace,
and you tell me over and over and over and over again my friend,
ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction.

You all are posting some great songs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks  :)

Katie mentioned this song and posted the lyrics. I have heard of the song before, but for some reason I didn't put the song with the title. Yes, this is no doubt a great "hippie" song and a great song too. I have also heard of the group Small Faces many times. In looking for this I discovered that one group member went on to start another group Humble Pie and the another became the drummer for the Who after Keith Moon's death. Two of the other members teamed up with Rod Stewart to form the group Faces. The song is:
