DVD review promoting buying a future DVD release???
« on: April 03, 2006, 02:28:07 am »
OK...my initial reaction was 'Not!'  I mean, it's bad enough waiting til Tuesday!  However, this is a very good review of the DVD and there may be some valid points; unfortunately my mind counters them all with 'But I have to have this one NOW.' :-)  Later I can get another...right?

"If you can wait, my advice is to hold off for the inevitable two-disc set that will hopefully be well worth the money when it arrives. In the meantime, you can always rent this one, which I heartily recommend to anyone who hasn’t seen the film yet. And to the naysayers: We’ve heard you. Over and over again. Give it a rest, please."

I think it's probably speculation at this point, but who knows?

I haven't read the story or seen the movie in what seems like forever.  In spite of this review I'm heading to the store and purchasing it first thing in the morning.  Should a bigger and better DVD come out later, I'll buy it as well.

By the way if you buy one from Target, you get a CD of Campbell Scott reading the entire short story.

I was surprised and delighted to receive my DVD on April 5th, from Amazon, along with the screenplay with comments by Annie, and Larry and Diana. $16.99. I got free shipping, but the book wasn't free.  I'm surprised at how good the DVD is; although I had to buy the full screen version, they managed to fit the scene onto the screen without that awful cropping and swinging back and forth I expected in the panoramic shots. And how I got the boys right in my own front room -- how cool is that!
Ennis and Jack, the dogs, horses and mules, a thousand ewes and their lambs flowed up the trail like dirty water through the timber and out above the tree line into the great flowering meadows and the endless coursing wind.

I am also very happy to have Jack and Ennis 'home'.  For whatever reason, I'm not experiencing any of the angst of not being in the theatre anymore...My living room, while not at all perfect or up-to-date, technologically-speaking, is a fine place for them to be.

I also keep re-reading the short-story.  My brother took the copy I owned, so I'm pretty sure my library doesn't think they're ever getting the Wyoming stories collection back.

In the bonus section interview with Ang Lee, it's more or less said that he was looking for a break after 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' - it's more or less said that he was physically ailing, in poor health, and that he took on the Brokeback Mountain project regardless.

Has anyone else seen any details about this?

Dear Lynne -- I'm also not experiencing the disappointment I feared in the switch from big screen to 20" TV.  The greatness of the work stands firm.  I note some comments criticizing the supplementary material on the disc, and the absence of commentary by Annie Proulx.  I lucked out in ordering the screenplay book (along with the DVD); the little book has an excellent essay by Annie on her involvement with the film, from story to screen, and her appreciation of the process, all the persons involved, and the fine end result.  Highly recommended.  Iris

Disappointment?  NO.  Not to sound like a freak but more than anything I was relieved to have the DVD at home.

Thanks for the recommendation, Iristarr... I'll have to look for it.

Juneaux - you are not a freak.  I also feel like they are safer, for want of a better word, at home.  I had to *make* myself not buy multiple copies so I would have one to put away in the safe deposit box in case there was a Fahrenheit 451-type problem and all other copies were destroyed.  ;)

(I see myself writing this and I can't believe it myself, but it's true...)
