Nope.
To be fair, the comment went by so quickly that I wouldn't be surprised if even a lot of people who "know better" missed it.
--- Quote ---I despair. (No irony.)

Yeah. Even the kids on Kid Jeopardy! this past week were no great shakes at American history, so I would not hold out much hope for knowledge of English history.

William & Kate
Dress Up as Cowboys
in Calgary
9:00 am, July 8th, 2011
Prince William and Duchess Kate made a momentary faux pas on their visit to Calgary yesterday, initially declining to wear the city’s traditional white cowboy hats upon arrival.
Calgary’s mayor Naheed Nenshi presented the couple with special Smithbilt hats, which have been given to visiting dignitaries for decades, but William and Kate didn’t put them on at the airport, as is custom.
Fortunately, the royals donned the hats – and other conventional garb – while attending a rodeo show later on Thursday.
The lesson, as always?
When in Calgary, do as the Calgarians do.
(Sorry, Roland and Gil, but WHICH one is Stephen Harper
again, the one in the immediate foreground??)
::) :laugh:
Aloysius J. Gleek:
"Well, this is different," the prince said with a laugh as he touched the tip of his cowboy hat at a reception Thursday night. "We have been hugely struck by the diversity of this beautiful country: from Ottawa to Quebec; from Prince Edward Island to the Northwest Territories; and now the excitement of Calgary — and what about these fantastic white hats."
Go here for a really nice set of photos from Will and Kate in Calgary:

I have to say--of course, everyone is kvelling over Kate, but--Will has really been kind of fantastic. Think of his racist old grandfather (Philip), the oblivious stuffed shirt father (Charles) and the truly despicable 'Uncle Andy' (ugh) compared to Will's manifest kindness, good humor and grace. No unctious goody-goody, but a genuinely nice man.
I know it's trite to say it, but--he's Diana's son.
(But still--endearing as it is, he HAS to work to improve that atrocious French accent--yike!)
