Front-Ranger:
Good guess, Paul! But . . . NO! Here is a photo of William Powell in a similar pose. (Although he is in the movie I saw last night!)
More guesses, please!!
southendmd:
Oh, it's John Barrymore!
Front-Ranger:
Correct, friend Paul! It's amazing how little known John Barrymore is these days! Back in his heyday, he was called "The Great Profile". I'm not sure I would like having that nickname. He starred in the first full-length movie of Sherlock Holmes back in 1922.
southendmd:
The Great Profile! I found this of a very young John B. So, how was the film, besides silent?
Front-Ranger:
Wonderful photo, Paul! I'm amazed at the way his shirt and jacket envelope him and set off his magnificent head!
I thought the film was entrancing, but a lot of it had to do with the rich blacks and grays and the way the actors made up for the lack of dialogue with their piercing gazes and postures. I'm told this film is viewable on Turner Classic Movies. It's worth a look! Also, Hedda Gabler is in it, as well as William Powell.
