I had heard this line before I saw the movie and the context in which it is spoken in the movie was not explained ot me, so this line made it sound like Bond was still 'rough around the edges' and didn't have the taste he grew to have in martinis (shaking the martini apparently dilutes the drink less than stirring it), instead,

SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!  SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!  SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!

he does like martinis and is quite knowledgeable about his drinks and this line is spoken when he's distracted and angry.

that's what I liked about the writing. the words not only function to entertain, but they give insight into the characters at the same time, if you care to look.

I'm going to see CR again on Sunday with a 80 year-old family friend. He had a stroke 3 years ago and is paralysed on one side and incapable of speech. But I know from before his stroke that he is a big fan of James Bond and all kind of gadets. We found out about which cinema gives access to wheelchairs and airs CR. It's going to be a fun day!

I'm getting side track, but I just heard a discussion of this on a food radio show. The host was talking to a rep from Plymouth Gin. When asked whether we should be ordering our martinis shaken, he said "Absolutely not!" Shaking the martini can break ice shards into the drink and thus dilutes it more than stirring. In addition, shaking will "bruise" the gin, separating the oil in the chemistry of the gin, making it cloud up, instead of remaining clear and crisp.
