In the book it leacd you to believe that Jack was up alone the previous year. "Both enjoying the company of the other where none was expected."
Very good point--that nuance had evaded me previously. And that would explain why Aguirre came down so hard on Jack for the loss of the sheep due to the lightning strike; there might have been no one else to (unfairly) blame.

There is NO WAY they thought of each other as rivals...in the short story, it says "They came together on paper as camp tender" and "sheep herder."
Right--I meant to refer to the possible implications of how the scene plays out in the film alone; in the story, there would have been no undercurrent of competition, though we do learn that both boys had not expected company on the mountain.
